The idea that "true love happens at first sight" is a popular romantic myth.
Many people believe that the moment they lock eyes with someone, an instant, magical connection means they have found their soulmate. This idea has been popularized through movies, fairy tales, and romantic stories, where characters fall deeply in love within seconds of meeting. While the idea sounds beautiful, science tells a different story.
The reason people believe in love at first sight is because of instant attraction. When we see someone who looks physically appealing or carries themselves in a way that we admire, our brain releases a rush of dopamine the same "feel-good" chemical that makes us excited and happy. Although this sudden outpouring of feelings may appear to be love, in actuality, all it is really is a strong attraction mixed with curiosity and excitement. Even though we barely know this person, our mind fills in the gaps, leading us to believe that we already "know" they are the right one. Scientific research, however, suggests that true love takes time to develop.
Studies in psychology show that deep love is built through shared experiences, trust, emotional connection, and understanding over time. While attraction can be immediate, love itself grows as two people learn more about each other, support each other through challenges, and create meaningful memories together.
This does not mean that people who feel an instant connection will not fall in love, but the love they experience at first sight is more about excitement and infatuation rather than deep emotional bonding. So, while movies may tell us that love is instant, real relationships are proof that love is something that grows, not something that strikes like lightning in a single moment.
