The last goodbye

The old man's trembling hands stroked the grey fur of his dog, his faithful, lifelong companion.

Memories of their adventures together washed over him, taking him back to the days of his youth, when he was an energetic puppy.

-My friend, -John whispered in a breathy voice. -Thank you for all these years of unconditional loyalty. You were my strength when I needed it most and my joy in difficult times.

The dog fixed his tired but loving gaze on the old man's eyes, as if he understood every word.

An unbreakable bond united them, beyond the barriers of language.

He strokes the dog's head one last time, feeling the life slowly drain from his friend's body.

With a quiet sigh, the dog closes his eyes, leaving behind his legacy of love and loyalty.

Tears stream down the old man's cheeks as he holds the limp body of his faithful friend.

He looks up at the old oak tree that has witnessed his endless walks and games, and knows it is the perfect place to say goodbye.

It is very sad when that happens. I had to do it with my dog who we had to put down after 18 years of life. I hugged her, thanked her for everything and apologized for putting her down, but she already had advanced cancer and other afflictions.

Too hard for those of us who love our pets as part of the family, I have gone through the same pain several times. Thank you for reading me and the support.
