It is April 1st 1969, the third year of the Nigerian Civil War. Ojukwu, the leader of the Biafran revolution has fled the country and left both his people and soldiers at the mercy of the ravaging Nigerian troops. Hunger and starvation loom in the air and all routes to the east have been blocked by the Nigerian government.

Then there is poor Okechukwu, he plunges into the street and hurries past a woman carrying her child. With every leap, he remembers the voice in the radio announcing the entry of the Nigerian soldiers into Onitsha. Time is ticking. He must get his pregnant wife and daughter from their hideout and leave Onitsha at once. Onitsha isn't safe anymore.

As he runs, he turns back and looks at the multitude of young, old and vulnerable men, women and children scattered about the street, scampering for safety. He remembers how much he has lost to the war. He remembers his parents, two sisters and only brother who died from the war.

And just right there in that rustic town, left alone with his wife and daughter, he swears to protect his family even in death.
