This is my post for #freewriters 2144 Tuesday prompt copy of me hosted by @mariannewest and @daily.prompt
The tide is all wrong for getting sandfleas, you either need to go very early or very late in the day. I got up early this morning and drove to the beach. The first beach I went to had sandfleas but they were too small. On the next beach, they had a closed sign on the gate. I drove to Whities Beach and found one small bunch of fleas. So I left there and went to Bonsteel beach, I could not believe it, there were fleas but by now the tide was dropping. I got maybe 6 pulls in them before they disappeared. The tide was getting low too fast it was like someone pulled the plug. I went back to my truck and sat there for a couple of hours, I thought if they were there this morning maybe they would be there again in the afternoon when the tide gets to where it was this morning.
Wishing there was a copy of me, I got tired of sitting in the truck and went back to the beach and picked up shells and rocks while I waited on the tide. There was no one else on the beach.
This guy showed up and was carrying something that I had never seen before, it looked like a ladle with holes in it on an extendable pole. He called it a sand dipper, he said he got it for a birthday present but they sell them on Amazon. He said it is for picking up shells and sea glass. I had picked up several pieces of sea glass so I gave them to him.
A couple of surfers showed up and I was watching them surf. I heard one yell at the other one and point to the east so I kept watching and I saw a huge shark riding in a wave.
I told the guy with the sand dipper that I like to pick up these rocks with holes in them, and he said he did, too. He called them Hag rocks or some people call them Fairy rocks, I did not know there was a name for them.
I have never seen turtle nests this high on the beach, this was the highest one.
The others are halfway up the dune.
I stayed at this beach until 4 o'clock and the tide was still not as high as it was when I got them this morning but I really needed to pee and there was no way that I was going to use the outhouse they have there. I gave what sandfleas I had to a man who was trying to catch them with his hands. I knew he was not going to catch any because I could see they were not there but he was giving it his best effort and I felt bad for him.
When I got to the first beach with a decent bathroom, I was mad when I saw the closed sign was still there, I thought it was closed this morning because I was there early but I guess that was not the case.
I drove to the next beach with a bathroom and there were no cars in the parking lot, I do not like going in the bathrooms at the beach when I am the only person there, but I really had to go.
When I came out of the bathroom, I decided to walk down on the beach to see if any sandfleas were there, at that end of the parking lot a man was sitting in a fold up chair, he had a suitcase with an orange life jacket hanging on it, I found this odd. When I came back from the beach, I asked him if he needed a ride somewhere, he said no thanks he had someone coming. I am still curious about the suitcase and the life jacket at the beach. Did he get dropped off of a boat?

Maybe he was waiting to get picked up by a boat!
LOL I think you are joking, if not, a boat could not pick him up, it can not cross the reef without sinking and he could not swim with the suitcase. It will forever be a mystery.
Sandfleas!
From what I recall, they BITE. (I was in Rhode Island at the time.)
Why would anyone collect sandfleas?
Some kind of fish bait....?
Interesting - the man in the folding chair in the parking lot.
Did he float in off a shipwreck... get deposited by a UFO....
You are thinking of sandflies or as, I will say northern folks, call no-see-ums they bite sandfleas are a type of mole crab, they do not bite but are very good bait.
The man in the chair, I am clueless as to how he got there and how he was leaving. As soon as the words, Do you need a ride somewhere came out of my mouth, I remembered these were not the old days when you could give strangers a ride and he was strange. As I was leaving and driving by him, he did not even look at me, he was just staring off into space, I was glad he said he had a ride coming. There is not even a house within walking distance of that beach maybe a UFO did drop him off he was dry so he did not swim from a boat.
The man in the chair - what a fascinating start to a story nobody seems to know!
It was not sandflies (no-see-ums) that got me in Rhode Island - it was some creepy crawly little things and I thought someone said sand fleas, but my memory is a sieve.
Who would guess "sandflea" is a type of crab!
Offering rides to strangers - um, I did that, recently! It was a snowy day in February, and this guy was walking a busy road with white sneakers going six inches deep in the snow, so I offered him a ride, and he took me up on it. He had another mile to go. I dropped him off at some apartment and will never see him again, I'm sure, not in the news as a serial killer, anyway.... my daughter said I shouldn't have offered him that ride, but he looked young, and his shoes looked so nice....
I have never been to Rhode Island so I do not know anything about what bit you, maybe they have something there that they call sandfleas and they bite.
I would have given the guy in the snow a ride, too. It is a good thing that serial killers do not wear nice shoes.
