I took a step closer, moving towards the lake. Its surface had the reflection of a crescent on it, the bright light of the moon illuminating most of it. Lowering myself till my knees hit the hard ground, I leaned towards and over the lake, placing my both hands on the ground so I won’t topple into the body of water. A face came in my view and I let out a quiet gasp, surprised. My eyes were blue with streaks of silver and my hair, the brightest shade of red. I leaned in some more, till my entire portrait came into view. Reaching my fingers out, I dipped them into the almost still water and watched it ripple slightly from the act.
Just underneath my left eye, at the ample of my cheek lay a scar that cut from the right side of my temple and ended just there. I lifted my hand away from the water and pressed my fingers into the risen and rough edges of skin. Sighing and having enough view of how I looked, I turned sideways. The one who is perfect but ruined. I still heard the voice of the king whenever he sent for me to his chambers. The way his lips would curl in disgust the moment he came upon my face. And then, it would anger him. The way I looked, the scar that I never meant or wished to happen. He would take it out on me, with the carved rod like a sickle, he kept just beneath his office desk.
I raised up from the ground with a grunt, feeling my palm against my knees that got hurt a bit from the pebbles and stones that dug into them. About to turn to walk away, I caught something glint, like…moonlight. But not up in the dark sky. My eyebrows knitted together as my gaze swept over the space, not a trace of where it came from in sight. “Must’ve been my imagination,” I murmured, stepping back once more, when the light, the way it shimmered, so bright, came into view again. And then, I forced myself to look into the lake again, desperate for the source, for it was so beautiful. Like the light of life, the brightest star. The lake shone brighter, lighter as I tipped my head and looked into it.
I saw my reflection. And my brows furrowed once more, as confusion seeped in. The lake lit up, mimicking the color of my eyes. They were so similar. So similar to mine. And then, my eyes shone brighter. The silver streak, the brightest star. So similar to me.
