We rounded the corner slowly, looking around to make sure that we saw everyone in the vicinity. The mobile police station (which looked like a militarized RV) was parked in its usual place in front of the spot. It was nothing to look at from the outside, just another small, run-down bodega in the “bad part of town”.
Seeing nothing out of the ordinary, I parked the car one street over. Joe was sitting in the passenger seat, and he slumped down even lower as I exited the car and tried to look inconspicuous as I ambled towards the bodega.
Ignoring the mobile police station, which had sat there, seemingly empty, for months, I went inside. Quickly I made my purchase from a small, Jamaican man who stood behind a thick plexiglass barrier. The bounty was two small, green bags of Acapulco Gold.
I quickly made my way to the exit and hurried towards the car. As we pulled away I was flagged down by a man with a broken down car only a block away. He said he had a dead battery, and wanted to know if we could help him. I hopped out, grabbed my jumper cables from the trunk, handed them off to the man, and wished him luck. Before he could object, I was back in the car speeding back towards the highway.
Well done! I am glad that you decided to write with us :)
Thanks! Will give it a whirl!
Perfect detail, conveys sense of danger and surreptitious nature of the "purchase".
Thanks for the kind words!
