This is my entry for @mariannewest's 3-part weekend freewrite. If you've never tried one of these, you can read all about it here. The three prompts are in italics in my story.
"What an inheritance! You are richer than you thought."This was Meghan's realization shortly after she became a Christian. She now had inherited the kingdom of God, and everlasting life. It couldn't get any better than that. Instead of leading a life full of sin and hopelessness, she now was free from the endless burden of sin, free to choose life, free to choose to live God's way. What a wonderful future! It wouldn't be all roses, of course, but there was hope now, and joy, and new friends who would support her as she learned how to walk this new way. It made her feel all warm and tingly inside whenever she stopped to think about it. Sundays would always be special days now, spent worshiping her Savior with her newfound friends in Christ. No more Sunday morning hangovers, because now she didn't need the Saturday night binges to dull the pain of living. In Jesus she had found a new reason to live. She paused in her thoughts to breathe yet another "Thank you!" to the One she now had come to know.
"In one day?" I asked, admiring his luck. "It wasn't luck," he explained, "it was the leading of the Holy Spirit. I knew Meghan was searching for the truth. We had talked about it before. She was so unhappy, so confused, and had so many questions. We talked for hours and hours that day. I found her sitting on a bench in the park, just crying. Her life felt so empty, she said. So meaningless. She asked me why I always seemed so full of life and joy, so I told her about Jesus. She didn't know anything at all about the Bible, and she was full of questions. I ended up working my way from Genesis all the way to the Gospels, pretty much. She said she wanted what I had, so I told her all about it, and we prayed together. Some people don't notice a big difference right away, but Meghan's face just lit up like a neon sign and she said, 'Oh, it is so wonderful to understand and to believe and to know I am truly loved!' That's the big problem so many people have, you know, they don't feel loved. And there is absolutely nothing like the love of Jesus."
He paused to think for a minute, and then continued on. "Living life without Jesus is sort of like wearing broken glasses. You think you can see what you are doing, but really, everything is out of focus and blurry. Reality isn't what you are seeing. Then, once you can see things the way God sees things, it all comes into focus and makes sense. Well, not everything. God wouldn't be a very impressive God if absolutely everything about Him made sense. When an infinite God intersects with a finite human being, there is bound to be some confusion. We can't possibly understand all there is to understand about Him. Not here on earth, anyway. But with His help, we can understand a great deal more about life, about our purpose, about living the way He created us to live. All of that makes a lot more sense. And that is going to make a big difference in Meghan's life. She has much to look forward to now. I am very, very happy for her."
I was quiet for several minutes. Then I said to him, "Would you start at Genesis and explain it all to me, too? I want to understand."
