I looked out my cabin window, the one facing the forest.
It’s been a while since Bear went out. He should be back by now. Usually, he never goes farther than where the cabin is still visible — but today, he was late.
I looked around my room. It was dark, my laptop glowing faintly on the desk in front of me.
I stood up, straightening my skirt.
“Grandpa isn’t home, and he won’t be back until Monday.”
I closed my laptop and picked up a flashlight.
“I’ll have to go look for him.”
The forest beyond the window was darkening. It was evening, the last traces of sunlight filtering through the trees — but not for long.
I stepped outside, closed the door, and walked toward the forest.
“Bear!” I called into the woods. “Bear!”
He’s a good dog. Usually, it takes only one call for him to come running. The only time he doesn’t is when he’s found something interesting.
“Bear!” The forest was quickly sinking into darkness. I had to find him before it got dark.
“Bea—”
There he was, standing still, staring deep into the forest. Relief washed over me. Thank God I found this scoundrel before sunset.
“Bear, where have you—?” I began, but he didn’t move. It was as if he hadn’t even heard me.
I followed his gaze, peering into the trees. My eyes strained to see what had captured his attention.
And then I saw them.
High in the trees — eyes. Reflecting light. Shining. Unblinking. Watching.
Watching me.
My breath caught. The next moment, their shapes vanished.
No — they moved.
Moved too quickly.
Oh no.
I turned—
Too late.
