1) Use pauses in speaking sensibly /// Sprechpausen sinnvoll nutzen
| Probably the best known tip. Avoid gap fillers like "Um ... aaaaahhh ... uuummm". Sometimes it is better to be silent. It is better not to say anything for a few seconds. This gives time to plan your next sentence. Let your gaze wander calmly through the room. | Unless you are "tied" behind a pedestal or to a chair, move around the room. Occasionally change your position. Walking up and down slowly is also a good option. Admit it to yourself, you cannot know everything.
No matter how well you have prepared yourself for a topic, if there is a certain number of people in the audience, the probability is high that there is someone who also knows about it. And there is no shame in admitting not having been everywhere and having seen everything.
The following example: You tell about new research results. At the end of your lecture, the audience asked "Have you heard of the results of the ABC Clinic? How do you feel about them?" Folgendes Beispiel: Du erzählst von neuen Forschungsergebnissen. Am Ende deines Vortrages kommt die Frage aus dem Publikum "Haben Sie von der Ergebnissen der Klinik ABC gehört? Wie stehen Sie dazu?". Du hast zwar nie etwas davon gehört, sagst aber "Ja, klar. Toller Bericht!". Schließlich bist du ja vorbereitet! Prompt kommt Fragesteller "Aber das widerlegt vieles von dem was Sie gesagt haben?!" BOOM! Eigentor! Deine Glaubwürdigkeit ist weg. |
5) Let your eye(brow) speak /// Lass deine Augen(brauen) sprechen
| A slightly more subtle approach. Your facial expression - and especially the area around your eyes - says a lot about your state of mind. Are you convinced of what you are saying yourself? Are you focused? You are bored? Look in the mirror and practice a few such expressions. The difference is huge. | Ein etwas subtilerer Ansatz. Dein Gesichtsausdruck - und hier vor allem die Augenpartie - sagt viel über deinen Gemütszustand aus. Bist du von dem was du da sagst selber überzeugt? Bist du bei der Sache? Bist du gelangweilt? 6) Your humor /// Dein Humor
| Dry topics in particular benefit from adding a little humor from time to time. But that doesn't mean you should keep cracking jokes! A little irony can loosen up even the driest subject. | Gerade trockene Themen profitieren davon ab und an etwas Humor einfließen zu lassen. Das bedeutet aber nicht, dass du Witze reißen sollst am laufenden Band sollst! Etwas Ironie kann selbst das trockenste Thema auflockern. |
7) Excuse me please... /// Entschuldigen Sie bitte...

Do not apologize from the audience. Because as the word suggests, you ask your audience to take the guilt off you. "Sorry for the poor quality of the slides", "Please excuse my being late" The audience will nod politely, but still blame you. Maybe now on things that would not have been noticed at all. A common phrase that can simply be left out. Should you still want to use it, there is often a "I'm sorry we started late, but we're off right now." more suitable. |
Bitte das Publikum nicht um Entschuldigung. Denn wie das Wort schon sagt, bittest du deine Zuhörer darum die Schuld von dir zu nehmen. "Entschuldigen Sie die schlechte Qualität der Folien", "Entschuldigen Sie bitte mein zu spät kommen" Das Publikum wird höflich nicken, aber dennoch dir die Schuld geben. Vielleicht jetzt auch an Dingen die gar nicht aufgefallen wären. Eine übliche Floskel die man einfach weg lassen kann. Solltest du es dennoch verwenden wollen, ist oft ein "Tut mir leid, dass wir verspätet anfangen, nun aber direkt los." passender. |

| Avoid using negative words and phrases like "I hope I won't bore you". "I have no idea, I'm sorry" and "We have tough times ahead of us." Instead, use "I hope I can inspire you for the following." You are on the podium for the audience, not for yourself. If you start your lecture right away with "Unfortunately I had little time to prepare and I'm quite nervous because this is a very complex topic for me", you will lose credibility right at the beginning. And to be completely honest, the audience is not interested in your problems now, they want to hear something on the topic. |
Du bist für das Publikum auf dem Podest, und nicht für dich. Wenn du deinen Vortrag direkt mit "Ich hatte leider wenig Zeit zur Vorbereitung und bin ziemlich nervös weil das ein sehr komplexes Thema für mich ist" beginnst, verlierst du direkt zu Beginn an Glaubwürdigkeit. Und ganz ehrlich, die Zuhörer interessieren deine Probleme jetzt nicht, sie wollen etwas zum Thema hören. |
10) Joy instead of fear /// Freude statt Angst

Spread a positive vibes. Pick up your audience right away. Instead of "I am pleased to be able to introduce you to our new product" start with "Rejoice, because you will learn right away how our new product can make YOUR work much easier." In this way you brought your audience directly into the center and aroused their interest. At the beginning, even one day in advance, consciously create your worst-case scenario. What COULD go wrong and think about suitable ways out of it. Shortly before the presentation, imagine the best case. How well it will work out and your success will look like. This way you will start with a positive feeling too. |
Verbreite positive Stimmung. Hole deine Zuhörer direkt ab. Statt "Ich freue mich Ihnen unsere neues Produkt vorstellen zu dürfen" passt ein "Freuen Sie sich, denn sie erfahren gleich wie unser neues Produkt IHRE Arbeit deutlich erleichtern kann." So hast du direkt dein Publikum ins Zentrum geholt und ihr Interesse geweckt. Stelle dir zu Beginn, auch ruhig einen Tag vorher, bewusst dein worst-case scenario aus. Was alles schief gehen KÖNNTE und überlege dir direkt passende Auswege dafür. Kurz vor der Präsentation stellst du dir allerdings den best-case vor. Wie gut es klappen wird und deinen Erfolg, so beginnst auch du direkt mit einem positiven Gefühl. |
