the marshmallow test

Have you heard about the marshmallow test?

In this test, one piece of marshmallow candy is placed in front of a child and he then has the choice between eating it immediately or waiting 15 minutes to get two pieces instead of one as a type of test of his ability to postpone immediate reward in exchange for obtaining the better long-term reward.

It turns out that children who preferred to wait for long-term reward were more successful in their adult lives in the future.

The surprising thing here is not this test itself, but rather another test similar to it, where before the piece was placed in front of them, they were given several old crayons and were told that they could color with them while they were waiting for the candy to arrive, but they told the children that if they waited a few more minutes, it would be done. They brought a better and more beautiful coloring kit as a reward for their waiting, then they divided the children into two parts. The first group brought them a better set of pens after several minutes of waiting, while the second group was apologized to them under the pretext of not finding new pens. Then after that, they conducted the same marshmallow test on both groups of children. However, the strange thing is that the children whose confidence in the system was shaken ate the marshmallows without any waiting, while the first group waited the entire period because of their confidence in the fairness of the game based on their previous experiences.

The researchers came to the conclusion that if there are people in an unfair and untrustworthy society and environment, then people will prefer the faster and easier way to do their work because they know that if they make the extra effort they will not find the appreciation they deserve for their work.

And so too, my brothers, our societies in which a person works half as well as his colleague and then gets the same appreciation lead to people losing confidence in the entire societal system. They do not see the need for charity in their actions, and this results in their nation as a pawn, backwards from the rest of the world!
