Very interesting. My oldest loves rocks. I order him geodes occasionally from Amazon and he loves bashing them open to see what's inside. He says he wants to be a geologist when he grows up. I showed him your post and he loved the photos.

Awesome! Japan, being so mountainous, has some nice geologic features. Enoshima is cool to look at, especially the caves on the backside. There is a rock shop on the island too! I'd be happy to send your son a small set of minerals. I have lots of small pieces just lying around, but they would be good, rare material to keep that fire burning in him/her.
