A Short Basic Guide To Square Roots

Hi there. Here is a short and basic guide to square roots from mathematics.

What Number Times Itself?

A good way to look at the square root is what number times itself gets that number? The square root of 100 is ten. It is because 10 times 10 is equal to one hundred. Here is another example. The square root of 4 is 2.

Mathematically, the square root of nine is represented as:

The symbol for square root is a mixture of the Nike check symbol with a line on top. Nine is inserted below the line and on the right side of the check mark part of the square root sign.

The square root of nine here is three. (Quicklatex image below)

This is the basic part of square roots where we take the square root of a number that is zero or greater. You cannot take the square root of a negative number as you would get an error. You can take the square root of numbers that are not perfect squares or have decimals in them. With those cases you cannot really obtain the square roots fast using mental math. A different method would be needed.

At higher levels, square roots would be mixed with functions. That is not covered here.

Given The Area Of Square What Is The Side Length?

From a geometry standpoint the square root can be viewed as determining the side length of a square given that the area is known. Screenshot image from a Powerpoint slide I have.

To obtain the side length of a square the square root of the area would be way to go here. In the image above the side length of the square would be square root of 100. The side length here is 10 centimetres.

Thank you for reading.
