The medieval fortress of Severin was built in the 13th century at the initiative of the Hungarian Kingdom, which erected this fortress for defense on the southern border of the Banat of Severin. The first garrison of the fortress was formed by the knights of St. John. The fortress had a strategic position, being located on the Danube and in the immediate vicinity of the old Roman fort Drobeta.
The construction was carried out during the XIII – XV centuries, during which the fortress was permanently fortified, enlarged and strengthened. The construction was defended by a deep water ditch, whose traces can be seen even today, being surrounded by two rows of stone walls, supported by 6 defense towers. The Ottoman invasions subjected the fortress to a long series of sieges over the centuries.
The most devastating attack was during the time of Soliman the Magnificent, in 1524, when the walls were completely destroyed, practically from the fortifications remaining only a single tower, called the Tower of Severus, which led to the establishment of the name of the town today, Drobeta Turnu-Severin. Following a large rehabilitation project, the fortress can be admired today in all its grandeur.

How many of you go out for pizza and end up visiting the sights of a medieval fortress? I bet not too many... Well, that was the scenario for me this afternoon. I left home with a friend at about 3 PM, heading to Drobeta Turnu Severin, @gadrian's hometown, known for its really tasty pizza, and ended up taking a tour of the fortress.
We did eat the pizza, and it was delicious. I even indulged in some dessert. After that, my friend suggested a walk to burn off those calories, and I couldn't refuse.
The plan was initially to take a stroll somewhere close to downtown, but a "divine inspiration" led me to suggest visiting the fortress instead. Although we drove there, we did rack up quite a few steps.
While it wasn't my first time there, this visit was different because we could only tour the exterior. The museum section was closed, so we had to settle for exploring the grounds.
If you've read the entire post, especially the introduction where I shared a bulk of information regarding its history, you'd know that the site has significant historical ties. However, it's no longer in its original form; it has been restored, but I must say, I appreciate the result.
When you're there, you don't even feel like you're in Romania. The quality of the restoration surpasses our standards, and I would love to see more of our historic sites maintained in such pristine condition.
On the left side fence, there are some drawings depicting the area and the people who lived there during those times. I thought it wise to photograph them so that you guys can get an idea of life back in the day... Not particularly pleasant, I must say, with all the fighting and killing that took place in defending our territories.
Nowadays, warfare has evolved, with drones and AI playing significant roles. Who knows how wars in the 22nd century will look like? I am a man of peace, and to be honest, this place during sunset gave me a sense of tranquility, not war.
But now it's time to hit the hay. I've had a pleasant Saturday, and with spring improving day by day, and the Bitcoin halving just around the corner, it's good times, people. Signing out now, but before I do, I want to wish you all a great weekend. See you tomorrow.

That looks like a really interesting town ! Whenever someone posts photos of a castle on Hive, I like to look at it on a map to see what the ground is like. It looks like Drobeta Turnu Severin has a selection of interesting Roman sites as well as the castle, and a couple of good restaurants as well. I wonder if I could talk my wife into having a holiday in Romania.....
The Roman Empire had quite some fights against the Dacians in this area.
They certainly did ! Even the Britons didn't get them to actually change the equipment they had to issue to their legionaries, but the Dacians forced them to create upgraded armour to counter the falx weapons they used.
