Whoever goes to Península Valdés to see whales and pigeons up close at this time of year forgets, due to time or because they don't know it, to visit one of the most beautiful natural reserves in Argentine Patagonia.

It is the Island of the Birds, a sacred place with an incredible diversity of birds.

This small island, which has a great biological value since it is used as a repulsive area for a large number of seabirds, is located near the coast of the Carlos Ameghino Isthmus (which links the Valdés Peninsula with the mainland) on the San José Gulf . Just 800 meters.

Some of the seabirds that use this island as a breeding area are: the kelp gull, the rocky cormorants, the biguas, the herons in their two Patagonian species, the white and the witch, the steam duck, the juarjual duck and penguins of Magallane. Many of them unique species of the region.

All that area has a particular marine effect: the tides.

During low tide, the part that connects the Island of the Birds to the mainland is exposed, revealing all the marine life that nests there such as crabs, algae, etc.

This marine phenomenon is repeated along the entire stretch of the Patagonian coast that reaches Chubut and is particularly evident in the beaches and cities such as San Antonio Oeste.

A tan solo 800 metros.

How to visit the Island of the Birds.

Due to the aforementioned characteristics (breeding area for seabirds that makes it a true natural sanctuary), entry to the island, considered an intangible area, has been prohibited since 1974.

But in order to give tourists and observers the possibility of seeing all the wildlife that inhabits the island on the coast, there is an interpretation center in the cuúl, powerful long-range viewers have been installed and viewpoints have been built from where you can appreciate the flight of birds and their activity in their natural habitat.
