It was my birthday on Tuesday the 22nd of November, so my dear friends Lizelle and Arthur treated me to a tour around the Botanical Gardens in Durban.
What a lovely day we had exploring the different species of rare plants and trees.
Come along and experience my excursion around this magnificent place.
The Botanic Gardens is one of the top 10 tourist sights in Durban KwaZulu-Natal South Africa.
It's one of the oldest surviving Botanic Gardens (established in 1849).
It is 15 hectares of active plant conservation and the most interesting plant based education.
They have all sorts of workshops and projects, for students who are interested in learning about gardening and planting vegetables.
I tell you what...I wouldn't mind going on one of those educational projects myself, I love gardening. Lol!
One could walk along the beautifully paved pathways, or hire a golf cart.
Which we did, and had a very informative guide, who was very pleasant and knowledgeable of the surroundings.
He took us around the Garden and showed us some interesting species of plants and trees.
Rainbow Eucalyptus Tree
This very tall colorful tree, has the most beautiful natural colors one could ever see.
Now I know what people mean when they talk of earthy colors, it's totally awesome.
I was told they make the most beautiful ornaments from the fallen branches.
It's the most beautiful tree I've ever seen.
The gardens have a large number of goslings which belong to a flock of Egyptian Geese where they've made their home.
These birds are very tame and eat out of one's hand.
One can buy special food from the gift shop at the entrance, and feed them...the Botanic Gardens have quite a large variety of different bird species.
The little Red Bishop Birds hovering over the wetland plants, breed amongst the flora and fauna growing in the lake.
They belong to the Weaver bird family and are quite common in Africa.
We saw the Pelican Bird nestling high above in the trees.
They were way to fast for me to take a photograph of them flying to and fro from tree to tree.
An old tree carved into fishes, depicting the annual winter sardine migration along KwaZulu-Natal's coastline, and global warming negative impact on our oceans.
The Greatest Shoal On Earth
The Jack Fruit Tree stands proudly in the garden with it's abundance of fruit.
We had Jack Fruit growing in our garden as a child, I never tried eating it, I never liked the look or smell of them. My uncle Ruben use to cook them. He told me it was actually delicious...nope! never tried it Lol!.
An old Baobab tree which is believed to be 100 years old.
The base of the tree is shaped like an elephants foot, which is quite amazing.
The trees in the Garden are adorned with colored lights, ready to brighten up the festive season.
A natural Jungle Gym tree, the children's delight when they visit the Garden.
No!...we didn't climb the tree, just posing with my delightful friends, making memories. (me in the blue shirt)
These two beautiful ladies we met on the way, sang happy birthday to me and made my day.
I can't remember what this beautiful flower is called. Maybe someone knows out there?
(I've just been told that this is a Cannonball tree flower).
I would like to see these whales lit up in the lake at night, the Gardens must look spectacular, I think we'll have to come back one evening and experience the awesomeness of the festive season lit up in lights, I believe it's something to see.
The Woodii, Wood's Cycad is one of the rarest and expensive plants in the world. Unfortunately it is extinct in the wild, apparently, the plant is cloned from this specimen, and is the only male plant.
This sunken garden is one of the most romantic spots in the Botanic Gardens, where lovers come to and sit and relax, enjoying each others company.
One could pick a spot any where in the gardens and have a picnic.
The entrance to the garden is free, which makes it an amazing place to visit.
When one is feeling low or anxious, one needs only to take a walk around the beautiful Botanic Gardens, and breath in the fresh African air and experience the beauty of the different species of plants and birds, then one can only leave feeling revitalized and refreshed.
Even grateful that we live in such a beautiful country.

Well Happy Birthday! 🪴🦜🌱💜🎶 now if I was in SA I'd make a beeline for those gardens! Isn't the Rainbow Eucalyptus Tree lovely? Here when the rain hits the bark of the trees in the front yard they change to a rich green. I love the gums.
