The city seems very neat and clean.
Paris is also very infamous for its pickpocketing and night time crimes.
But, yes always be wary of surroundings, ask locals about safe areas.

I've never felt unsafe in Paris at all, even at night when I've been there but any large city is going to have its areas where you have to be on your guard. Marseille was on another level in that regard though.
