Dear reader friends of this community, today I am going to give you a tour of the Middle of the World City, through some photos taken by Violeta, my sister-in-law, during her visit to Ecuador four years ago. The construction of this place required 11 years of work on land located a few kilometers north of the city of Quito. The main attraction of the place is the “Middle of the World” monument, a tower erected at 2,800 meters above sea level, which translates as Ecuador.
The monument is built with basalt and iron covered with polished stone, to which the metallic sphere that can be seen in the photograph was later added, which is supposed to represent the terrestrial globe; According to information taken from the internet, the sphere weighs 5 tons, with a diameter of 4.5 meters.
As is well known, Quito is not the only city on the equator; in fact, the equator is much larger, running through south-central America, central Africa, southern Asia, and northern Oceania. However, the Monument to the Middle of the World has made Quito known as the capital city that divides the Earth into two hemispheres.
Let us remember that Ecuador, the first country with 8 places cataloged as Cultural Heritage of Humanity in America, including its capital city and the well-known Galapagos Islands, takes its name precisely because the country is located on the equator, which is actually a strip of several meters, which divides our planet into two hemispheres: north and south.
It is claimed that standing at this geographical point means being right where the distance to one or the other pole of the planet is exactly the same, so if you spread your legs you will have one in each hemisphere. The truth is that on the equinoctial line the body weight is one kilo less, due to the lower gravitational force that exists when being in the place furthest from the center of the earth.
In this small town, which surrounds the monument, which is a replica of a Spanish city, there is also the Middle of the World Ethnographic Museum, dedicated to the indigenous ethnography of Ecuador. The museum aims to expose the inter-cultural character of the Republic of Ecuador.
We also find in this equatorial town the “Intiñán Museum”, built in the place where the middle of the world is actually located. The museum is interactive and commemorates, in addition to the country, all the indigenous peoples that make it up. In this unique place on the planet, you can observe and experience the Coriolli effect, balancing an egg on your head. From an anthropological point of view, it is interesting to know that the indigenous people reduced human heads.

Estimados amigos lectores de esta comunidad, el día de hoy les voy a regalar un paseo por la Ciudad Mitad del Mundo, a través de unas fotos tomadas por Violeta, mi concuñada, en su visita al Ecuador hace cuatro años. La construcción de este lugar ameritó de 11 años de trabajo en un terreno situado pocos kilómetros al norte de la ciudad de Quito. La principal atracción del lugar es el monumento la “Mitad del Mundo”, torre erigida a 2800 metros sobre el nivel del mar, que se traduce como Ecuador.
El monumento está construido con basalto y hierro revestido de piedra pulida, al que se le agregó posteriormente la esfera metálica que se aprecia en la fotografía, que se supone representa el globo terráqueo; según información tomada de internet, el globo pesa 5 toneladas, con 4,5 metros de diámetro.
Como es bien conocido, Quito no es la única ciudad sobre el ecuador; de hecho, la línea ecuatorial es mucho más grande pues también atraviesa el centro-sur de América, el centro de África, el sur de Asia y el norte de Oceanía. Empero, el Monumento a la Mitad del Mundo ha hecho conocer a Quito como la ciudad capital que divide a la Tierra en dos hemisferios.
Recordemos que el Ecuador, primer país con 8 lugares catalogados como Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad en América, incluida su ciudad capital y las conocidas Islas Galápagos, toma su nombre precisamente porque el país está ubicado sobre la línea ecuatorial, que en verdad es una franja de varios metros, que divide a nuestro planeta en dos hemisferios: norte y sur.
Se afirma que estar parado en este punto geográfico significa encontrarse justo donde la distancia hacia uno u otro polo del planeta es exactamente la misma, por lo que si separas tus piernas tendrás una en cada hemisferio. Lo cierto es que en la línea equinoccial el peso corporal es de un kilo menos, debido a la menor fuerza gravitacional que existe al estar en el lugar más alejado del centro de la tierra.
En esta pequeña ciudad, que rodea al monumento la cual es una réplica de una ciudad española, también se encuentra el Museo Etnográfico Mitad del Mundo, dedicado a la etnografía indígena del Ecuador. El museo tiene como finalidad exponer el carácter inter-cultural de la República del Ecuador.
También encontramos en este pueblo ecuatorial el Museo Intiñán, construido en el lugar donde efectivamente se encuentra la mitad del mundo. El museo es interactivo y conmemora, además del país, a todos los pueblos indígenas que lo configuran. En este lugar, único del planeta, se pueden observar y experimentar el efecto Coriolli, equilibrar un huevo sobre la cabeza. Desde un punto de vista antropológico, resulta interesante conocer que los indígenas reducían las cabezas humanas.

Hola Lauramica, pudes hacer lo que quieres "estar parada en ambos hemisferios a la vez" si v a este lugar tan singular. Respecto de tu pregunta, se afirma que en los desagües de lavamanos o inodoros el agua gira en distinta dirección, dependiendo de en cual hemisferio nos encontremos, lo cual ocurre por el llamado “efecto Coriolis”, que es evidente en la ciudad Mitad del Mundo.
