Arde Lucus
La fiesta de Arde Lvcvs en latín, nace con la intención de conmemorar la fundación de la ciudad de Lugo (15-13 a.C), recreando su pasado romano y castrexo. Celebrada por primera vez en el año 2000, cuando se declaró Patrimonio de la Humanidad la Muralla Romana de Lugo.
The festival of Arde Lvcvs in Latin, was born with the intention of commemorating the founding of the city of Lugo (15-13 BC), recreating its Roman and castrexo past. It was celebrated for the first time in 2000, when the Roman Wall of Lugo was declared a World Heritage Site.

El líder romano Paulo Fabio Máximo, líder de la legión romana, detuvo la lucha entre romanos y castrexos (pueblos de guerreros valientes que defendían hasta la muerte sus costumbres, cultura y estilo de vida, frente a los invasores romanos), para hablar con los líderes y negociar una tregua, con la promesa de respetar la paz y la forma de vida de los habitantes.
The Roman leader Paulus Fabius Maximus, leader of the Roman legion, stopped the fight between Romans and Castrexos (people of brave warriors who defended to the death their customs, culture and way of life against the Roman invaders), to talk to the leaders and negotiate a truce, with the promise to respect the peace and the way of life of the inhabitants.
Fue así como se fusionaron ambas culturas que se complementaron y crecieron juntas a lo largo de los siglos. Siendo Lugo, la ciudad más antigua de Galicia.
This is how both cultures merged, complementing each other and growing together over the centuries. Lugo is the oldest city in Galicia.
Para que el acto se hiciera eterno, decidieron fundar la ciudad con el nombre de Lucus Augusti, en conmemoración de su Dios Lugh, según otras fuentes señalan que el Lucus proceda del término latino que significa Bosque Sagrado, y, del emperador de Roma, Augusto. Este pacto se materializó con un monolito para hacer memoria de lo que allí sucedió.
In order to make the act eternal, they decided to found the city with the name of Lucus Augusti, in commemoration of their God Lugh, according to other sources the Lucus comes from the Latin term that means Sacred Forest, and, of the emperor of Rome, Augustus. This pact was materialized with a monolith to commemorate what happened there.

Esta fiesta es declarada de interés turístico gallego y nacional y lo que se quiere en un futuro cercano, es que sea declarada de interés internacional. Suma también el galardón de Tourism Women Friendly, en FITUR 2022 (Feria Internacional de Turismo), como reconocimiento al papel que juegan las mujeres en esta fiesta, ya que participan en la recreación histórica 4 asociaciones formadas únicamente por mujeres y una notable presencia en todas las celebraciones.
This festival has been declared of national and Galician tourist interest and what is wanted in the near future, is to be declared of international interest. It also adds the award of Tourism Women Friendly, in FITUR 2022 (International Tourism Fair), in recognition of the role played by women in this party, as they participate in the historical recreation 4 associations formed only by women and a notable presence in all the celebrations.
En la ciudad de Lugo, lo más común es ver personas mayores y días rutinarios. Todo cambia cuando hay fiestas, viene gente desde otras partes de Galicia y del país, prensa, televisión, fotógrafos y varios idiomas se vieron en estos días.
In the city of Lugo, the most common is to see older people and routine days. Everything changes when there are parties, people come from other parts of Galicia and the country, press, television, photographers and several languages were seen in these days.
En esta oportunidad, coincide el camino de Santiago por el Xacobeo 2021-2022 (año en que el que el día de Santiago, 25 de julio cae un domingo), que por razones de pandemia, el Papa aprobó 2 años de Xacobeo.
In this opportunity, coincides the road to Santiago for the Xacobeo 2021-2022 (year in which the day of Santiago, July 25 falls on a Sunday), that for reasons of pandemic, the Pope approved 2 years of Xacobeo.
Lo que hizo que estuvieran en Lugo también peregrinos de distintos países. Siendo Lugo uno de los puntos del Camino Primitivo.
This meant that pilgrims from different countries were also in Lugo. Lugo being one of the points of the Primitive Way.
La muralla romana durante esta fiesta es la principal protagonista, pues fue construida, según la leyenda, para proteger el Bosque Sagrado de Augusto.

Desde el año 2019 (cuando yo aún no había llegado a este país) no se celebraba como era costumbre por la pandemia. Así que me fui a tomar fotos de algunas de las actividades desarrolladas en el centro y a ver el centro con mucha vida, hizo buen clima y pasamos un rato diferente.
Since 2019 (when I had not yet arrived in this country) was not celebrated as it was customary because of the pandemic. So I went to take pictures of some of the activities developed in the center and to see the center with a lot of life, it was good weather and we spent a different time.

Todos participan activamente de la fiesta, vestidos de romanos o de castrexos. Comparten con amigos y familiares las actividades, comida y conciertos.

La confección de trajes para el Arde Lucus supone un importante repunte económico para el sector de las telas, la confección y los complementos. Los talleres de costura trabajaron mucho en las últimas semanas.
The making of costumes for the Arde Lucus is an important economic upturn for the sector of fabrics, clothing and accessories. The sewing workshops worked hard in the last weeks.
Son muchos los que lucen distintos atuendos a lo largo de los días de fiesta, entre ellos, los políticos.

Fullonicae, lavanderías donde se lavaba, secaba, planchaba y se repintaba la ropa. Lo curioso era que utilizaban orina humana o animal, que al dejarla reposar por varios días, se descomponía y producía amoníaco. También usaban cenizas y arcillas para completar el lavado.
Después de varios enjuagues, usaban lavanda para perfumar y almidones para dar el toque final a la ropa.
Fullonicae, laundries where clothes were washed, dried, ironed and repainted. The curious thing was that they used human or animal urine, which when left to stand for several days, decomposed and produced ammonia. They also used ashes and clays to complete the washing.
After several rinses, they used lavender to perfume and starches to give the final touch to the clothes.

De todo lo que aprendemos de la historia, algo me queda claro, siempre hubo y habrán diferencias y enfrentamientos, pero al final, hemos aprendido los unos de los otros y nos hemos enriquecido mutuamente.
From all that we learn from history, one thing is clear to me, there have always been and will always be differences and confrontations, but in the end, we have learned from each other and have enriched each other.
