Illas Cíes/Islas Cíes/Cies Island
Esta vez les hablaré de las Islas Cíes, ubicadas en Vigo, ciudad de la costa noroeste de España, situada en plenas Rías Baixas (Rías Bajas).
This time I will talk about the Cies Islands, located in Vigo, a city on the northwest coast of Spain, located in the Rias Baixas (Low Rivers).
Las Rías Bajas son una parte del área costera de Galicia, desde Finisterre hasta la ría de Vigo. Ocupan casi toda la costa de la provincia de Pontevedra y parte de la costa oeste de la provincia de La Coruña.
The Rias Baixas are a part of the coastal area of Galicia, from Finisterre to the Vigo estuary, occupying almost the entire coast of the province of Pontevedra and part of the west coast of the province of La Coruña.
Ferri
Nuestro destino: el Parque Nacional Marítimo-Terrestre de las Islas Atlánticas de Galicia, donde se pueden pasar el día en las playas, haciendo senderismo, visitas al Faro y ver restos históricos, también conocido como el Faro do Monte do Faro.
Our destination: the Maritime-Terrestrial National Park of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia, where you can spend the day on the beaches, hiking, visiting the lighthouse and seeing historical remains, also known as the Faro do Monte do Faro.
También puedes ir a acampar hasta por 15 días, y un máximo de 600 campistas. Dormir a la sombra de los pinos y ver hermosas puestas de sol, son privilegios que tienen quienes pernoctan allí.
You can also go camping for up to 15 days, and a maximum of 600 campers. Sleeping in the shade of pine trees and watching beautiful sunsets are privileges for those who spend the night there.
Camino de senderismo/Hiking trail
Como vivimos lejos del lugar donde se abordan los ferris, salimos muy temprano de casa para salir a las 11 de la mañana sin apuros y mostrar el código QR que es la entrada al parque.
As we live far from the place where the ferries are boarded, we left home very early to leave at 11 am without haste and show the QR code that is the entrance to the park.
En época de Semana Santa y desde julio a agosto, es necesario comprar las entradas por internet y solicitar un permiso a la Xunta de Galicia, quienes en estas épocas, controlan el aforo, 1800 personas, 600 campistas, 150 barcos fondeados.
At Easter time and from July to August, it is necessary to buy tickets online and request a permit from the Xunta de Galicia, who at these times, control the capacity, 1800 people, 600 campers, 150 boats at anchor.

El recorrido dura menos de una hora en el ferri. Al llegar, nos dirigimos a la izquierda donde se recorre un camino de pasarela de madera y de Pinos hasta llegar a Praia de Rodas/ Playa de Rodas, que es la playa de más extensión de las Islas Cíes, abarca la Isla Monteagudo o Isla del norte.
The trip takes less than an hour on the ferry. Upon arrival, we go to the left where we walk along a path of wooden walkway and pine trees until we reach Praia de Rodas / Playa de Rodas, which is the longest beach of the Cies Islands, covering the Monteagudo Island or North Island.
Después de la Catedral de Santiago, las Islas Cíes son el segundo destino más demandado en Galicia, con mayor número de visitas desde el año 2007, cuando Gavin McOwan sugirió Playa de Rodas como la mejor playa del mundo, en el diario británico "The Guardián". Fue catalogada como la auténtica "playa caribeña", por el color turquesa del agua y la arena lo suficientemente blanca.
After the Cathedral of Santiago, the Cíes Islands are the second most popular destination in Galicia, with the highest number of visits since 2007, when Gavin McOwan suggested Playa de Rodas as the best beach in the world, in the British newspaper "The Guardian". It was catalogued as the authentic "Caribbean beach", because of the turquoise color of the water and the sufficiently white sand.

Un poco de historia/ A little bit of history
Los romanos llamaron a estas Islas Insulae Deorum (Islas de los Dioses). Su formación geológica es de finales del Terciario, cuando se produjeron los hundimientos de algunas partes de la costa, con lo que penetró el mar y se crearon las rías.
The Romans called these islands Insulae Deorum (Islands of the Gods). Its geological formation dates back to the end of the Tertiary period, when some parts of the coast were sunk, which allowed the sea to penetrate and created the estuaries.
El control monacal feudal de las islas y su población se mantuvo hasta que a finales del siglo XVI la vida en las islas se complica por la irrupción del pirata inglés Francis Drake, quien al servicio de la reina de Inglaterra, utiliza las Islas Cíes como base de abrigo, reparación y aprovisionamiento de sus naves, en su misión de hostigar a la escuadra española. Desde ese momento las islas siempre estuvieron en el centro de las luchas entre ingleses y españoles.
The feudal monastic control of the islands and their population was maintained until the end of the 16th century when life on the islands was complicated by the irruption of the English pirate Francis Drake, who, in the service of the Queen of England, used the Cíes Islands as a base for shelter, repair and provisioning of his ships, in his mission to harass the Spanish squadron. From that moment on, the islands were always at the center of the struggles between the English and the Spanish.
A principios del siglo XIX (1810), se instaló en el antiguo monasterio de San Esteban un almacén de artillería y un cuartel de carabineros, para dotar de protección a las islas y la entrada a la ría. Pocos años después (1840) también se dotó a las islas de dos fábricas de salazón, una taberna y se construyó el faro.
At the beginning of the 19th century (1810), an artillery warehouse and a carabinieri barracks were installed in the old monastery of San Esteban, to provide protection to the islands and the entrance to the estuary. A few years later (1840) the islands were also provided with two salting factories, a tavern and the lighthouse was built.
Los pobladores de las islas se mantuvieron principalmente de la agricultura, de la pesca y de la incipiente industria, hasta que esta fue decayendo y la isla se fue despoblando poco a poco, alcanzando su mínimo a mediados del siglo pasado.
The inhabitants of the islands were supported mainly by agriculture, fishing and the incipient industry, until this was declining and the island was gradually depopulated, reaching its minimum in the middle of the last century.
En época romana, son nombradas por Plinio el Viejo en su Historia Natural, como las islas "Siccae" (islas áridas), más tarde derivaría en Cicae y de ahí al actual Cíes.
In Roman times, they are named by Pliny the Elder in his Natural History, as the islands "Siccae" (arid islands), later it would derive in Cicae and from there to the current Cíes.
De la prehistoria hay muy pocos restos arqueológicos, lo que hace suponer que los humanos no establecieron asentamientos estables en las islas. De finales del Paleolítico o ya del Mesolítico (hace unos 12000-6000 años),se han encontrados únicamente un bifaz camposanquiense, un pico raspador y varias "poutadas" (pesos para redes), estando todos estos objetos relacionados con el marisqueo y la pesca.
There are very few archaeological remains from prehistoric times, which suggests that humans did not establish stable settlements on the islands. From the late Paleolithic or Mesolithic (about 12,000-6,000 years ago), only a bifaz camposanquiense, a scraper pick and several "poutadas" (weights for nets) have been found, being all these objects related to shellfishing and fishing.
El agua es muy fría, del océano Atlántico, por lo que me bañé varias veces y salía congelada. Al momento del baño se te congelan hasta las ideas, ya al salir, vuelves a estar bajo el sol y se te quita el frío.
The water is very cold, from the Atlantic Ocean, so I bathed several times and came out freezing. When you get out of the water, you get back in the sun and the cold goes away.

Para comer, está el Restaurante Rodas, situado junto al muelle de atraque en una antigua fábrica de salazón. Tiene una amplia terraza cubierta con bonitas vistas al Lago de Cíes y a la playa de Rodas.
For lunch, there is the Rodas Restaurant, located next to the docking dock in an old salting factory. It has a large covered terrace with beautiful views of Lake Cíes and Rodas beach.

Como siempre, nosotros llevamos nuestra comida y bebida de casa, así que no probamos el menú del Restaurante Rodas que nos quedaba más cerca.
As always, we brought our own food and drinks from home, so we didn't try the menu at the nearby Rhodes Restaurant.
Muy cerca de la Playa de Rodas, visitamos para tomar fotos, la Praia Figueiras/Playa Figueiras, ubicada desde el puente de Rodas hacia la derecha por un camino identificado.
Very close to Rodas Beach, we visited to take pictures, the Figueiras beach, located from the bridge of Rodas to the right by an identified path.

También conocida como la Playa de los Alemanes, es una playa nudista, aunque también hay gente con traje de baño. Tiene 350 m de largo y 50 m de ancho.
Also known as the Beach of the Germans, it is a nudist beach, although there are also people in bathing suits. It is 350 m long and 50 m wide.
Al igual que en Playa de Rodas, se observan muchas gaviotas patiamarillas y algún Cormorán. Como estamos en su espacio, comparten todo el día nuestra visita, algún picoteo o robo de comida no faltan a la hora de comer.
As in Playa de Rodas, there are many yellow-legged gulls and some Cormorants. As we are in their space, they share all day our visit, some snacking or stealing food are not lacking at lunchtime.
Al regresar, nuevamente esperamos el ferri, llegamos al puerto y a emprender el camino de regreso, después de pasar un día visualmente en playas caribeñas!
On the way back, again we wait for the ferry, arrive at the port and start our way back, after spending a day visually in Caribbean beaches!
