2 Days Cityscape Experience in Salzburg, Austria from Venice, Italy Itinerary

in Pinmapple4 years ago (edited)

Hop to the Salzburg city center and expect to see classy and scenic background surrounded by its old town as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Site that you would surely leave you with surprise. This is by far one of our best destinations we've traveled worldwide. Truly a charming vibe that you shouldn't miss!

Salzburg City Centre, Austria
Paradise for Ornate Baroque Architecture, Musical Metropolis and Sprawling Mountain Views

Located in the central part of Europe, holidays won't be complete without a stop and experience the city's sheer beauty. In this write-up, we'll highlight at a glance of the city's well-known parts and cliches in detail aiming to show you Austria's charm, accessibility, and different sides of the country even in a short amount of time.

Salzburg is popular for being the birthplace of a prolific and most influential classical composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the Von Trapp Family which is the setting of the "Sound of Music" that is mainly an obvious frontrunner in the old days.

How to get there

From Mestre Venice, Italy to Salzburg South, we've managed to travel by bus hence it is the most convenient and we do enjoy the beauty of some attractions in Italy while we are on the way to Austria. It took us almost 6 hours to get there.

It is advisable to buy a ticket in advance because it is cheaper. We bought ours in the evening, the day before our trip, for the price of 26 euro thru Flixbus. You can even have 19 to 22 euros if you book earlier, that would be so helpful if you will be able to do your activities or itineraries on time.

We started our trip from 10 oçlock in the morning and arrived at almost 4 oçlock in the afternoon. As we traveled by bus, we saw Austria's beauty: a refreshing environment, some castles, a lovely mountain view, and great rivers that are ideal fishing spots.

Just a Tip!

It is highly recommended to bring food and drinks with you except alcohol, our experience with the bus only stops one time for 10-15 minutes, so you wouldn't be able to go out for a long time. Only to have a break in the toilet. Might be lucky if there is a toilet on the bus, some don't though.😅

Our Shocking Moment Story:

The time we arrived at Salzburg South, we then took a bus going to Salzburg city center, my husband took our bag full of gadgets that are worth like €200, he mistakenly lost it when we are out of the bus. We knew that it is on the bus, however, the bus has similar number signs so we couldn't detect where it is.

Fortunately, my husband can speak German and the people from Austria are super helpful, when we arrived at the city center in Salzburg, we went to the police station, luckily, they are able to detect where the bag is and to make the story short, we found our bag and took it to the lost and found section. Phewww!!! Incredibly relieved about the incident happened.

Due to too much pressure, after the incident, we decided to book a hotel walking distance from the city center which is supposed to be an unplanned destination hence we want to go straight to the camping site in Austria. We stayed at Neutor Hotel for the price of around 100 euro, it is expensive for us but enough to relax a bit to de-stress.

No Regrets and Delighted to Explore More

Happy to the core that Austria's city center has tons to offer when it comes to baroque architecture, eye-catching castles, lively atmosphere. Oh, how we wish we can live here. The economic conditions seem to be working really great! We both learned that it is a safe country to live in and the people are awesome!

1st Day

Our trip to Austria on the first day is more relaxing, hence we just stroll around the city center late in the afternoon.

Pferdeschwemme

A Horse Well or House Fountain played a part of the well-known film: "The Sound of Music", you may be familiar of the "Do Re Me" melody where the Von Trapp children singing by the fountain is how you'll recall it.

The murals are impressive, beautifully decorated with various horse paintings and sculptures on the walls which is highly detailed and a great picturesque photo spot. This is a place where the royal horses use to be cleaned and watered.

Never miss this place as it is worth seeing to admire the impressive artwork. Located right after the tunnel entering the Old Town.

Just across this spot is where you can find a small Sound Of Music Museum if you wish to explore further.

We passed by the ground of Fortress Hohensalzburg Castle

Amused by this eye-catching arch, it's funny to think how the right side photo exhibit looks like a clitoris lol

Kollergienkirche

Kollergienkirche is known as the Collegiate Church, the pantheon of Salzburg, its majestic exterior has a catchy detail, originally built for the Benedictine University in a Baroque Style, stunned by this church fantastic work where it has been restored.

Free admission if you want to see the elegant interior yet classical design, and it is up to you if you want to leave a small donation. Taking photos is allowed. It has been renovated and provides a good explanation of its time frame on how the recent restoration has been done.

It is evening here, you can see a busy street view yet clean atmosphere, even though it is quite crowded. There are numerous restaurants and shops around the area

Getreidegasse

Getreidgasse in English means "Grain Lane"

The main pedestrian street of Salzburg old part of town, known for the ambient with sophisticated yet old-fashioned architecture will catch your attention because it is undeniably elegant.

A shopping place for tourists, expect to see some cafes, chocolatiers, restaurants, local crafts shops, and most of the store-branded items. It's worth trying some local food and buying souvenirs.

An iconic landmark that is notable for its ornate wrought-iron signs with their intricate details. There are numerous entry points where you can find some hidden gems that you'll surely enjoy strolling and taking photographs.

This street is also the birthplace of Amadeus Mozart, in the middle of it at number 9.

Getreidegasse captures the old world charm with the new world luxury. Such an Amazing Street that won't disappoint you.

The old world charm with a modern twist of the picturesque street lights is really stunning in the shopping and restaurant hub of Salzburg. Oh, it feels so good to unwind here!

Passing by to some shops here

Jewelry shop corner and no we didn't buy anything, just exploring and window shopping 😊

Where to Eat

As we are a budget traveler, we discovered a scrumptious Asian food restaurant yet cheap that provides a great value of money and a huge serving of food. We went for dinner at around 9 o'çlock at Mr. Wen. The restaurant served Asian fusion specifically Japanese, Chinese and Korean Cuisine. The price range varies from 5 to 15 euros for each meal.

The food is really delish, we ordered Rot Curry Chicken and Sichuan Rindfleisch for the price of 7.90 euros each meal.
We are surprised that each serving is big enough that it can be shared for 2 people together with rice in it, which is definitely a money saver!

Happy tummy, tasty food, and friendly service crew. Located in the heart of Salzburg city center, do visit their website link HERE for further details.

Great info alert! If you flew by plane from Salzburg airport, it would take you just 15 minutes by public transportation bus to head to Salzburg's main city center.

Our first stop: Love Lock Bridge in the heart of Makartsteg

One of our unforgettable moments is visiting this place, celebrating our 3rd anniversary as a couple, we are super delighted to have our lovely experience here. Tons of padlocks attached to the fence on the bridge, a perfect spot for couples declaring their eternal love for each other.

Bought the padlock nearby at the souvenir shop just across this street, it costs 10 euro,
We locked our love in one of the most beautiful destinations we've been to.

Upclose look at the couples love locks

Smiling widely recalling one of the sweetest magical encounters of falling in love. Finally had our very own trademark in the heart of Salzburg ❤️

To add, there is a musician in the lovelock bridge serenading some songs, you may stop by and listen whenever you feel like, give a tip or donation to brighten one's day, remember that even a small deed or how little you can offer, this can go a long way, it is best to give happiness, good karma will come to you in return. Cheers! 😇

Mozart's Birthplace (Mozarts Geburtshaus)

The house of the world's famous composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, this is one of the most visited places in the old town of Salzburg. Jammed packed destination definitely for those classical music enthusiasts.

There are tons of outstanding collections, paintings, personal items, hand-written music, and more information about his operas each focusing on different parts of Mozart's hectic lifestyle and his family. What a musical genius at a very young age!

There is also a souvenir shop that you can buy as well. The entrance fee ranges from €11 to €18. It is quite a small place and a quick walk-by to take photographs.

He is entertaining, great and unique appearance. Everytime a child passed by to give donations, he will give some treats. Awesome!😊

Salzburg has multiple squares that are surrounded by Salzburg Cathedral which you will be able to walk through in the city center.

Kapitelplatz

A bustling square where there is an artwork right in the center is a unique statue of a huge golden piece with a man that stood on the top, beside is the giant chessboard and the splendid view of the Hohensalzburg Fortress Castle.

Crowded area to go, aside from its history, this square is also a place where events, festivities, and concert show happens where the stage is prepared and seating spaces. A major tourist hotspot of the old town is nearby due to its photo-worthy atmosphere.

120237335_1723924547773425_621031231462226805_o.jpg

😤

Beware of some people who will give you something, I got this flower from a stranger,it came from a woman who looks like a teenager, assuming that she is offering it but then let you pay for €1 afterward. They are just roaming around the square. Was surprised and obviously annoying that you are obliged to pay for an offer lol

Tons of stalls around selling souvenirs, food, art and craft, local productss that attract tourists.

Residenzplatz

Residenzplatz is the largest square in the old town, it is really fun to run around the heart of Salzburg. The highlight is the 15 meter tall Triton fountain which is a superb creation with elegance and dynamic sculpturing of figures and four spouting horses.

Residenzplats are bordered in every side with astounding architecture. In addition, we adore seeing the horse-drawn carriages for the tourists adds to the atmosphere, thus, it also gives you an opportunity to take cart rides especially when you have more time to spare.

Oh these huge horses caught our attention, so amusing!

20190710_120525.jpg

Dom Zu Salzburg Cathedral

Dom Zu Cathedral has an eye-catching front facade and graceful Baroque exterior.

Located in the old town is the main cathedral of Salzburg. Super elegant with remarkable history and heritage, the Dom is originally built in the 8th century and was constructed in the early 17th century under Archbishop Prince Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau. Unfortunately, the Dom was bombed and partially destroyed during World War II, however, the major part of the stunning Baroque cathedral was preserved to be restored later.

We went for a stroll to see the Dom Zu Cathedral. It is incredibly worth a walk that would take 15 minutes uphill. A must take a panorama view due to its magnificent castle-like appearance and surrounding exterior squares from the top. This by far one of the best cathedral we've seen on our trips.

Visible multiple squares surrounded by Salzburg Cathedral which you will be able to walk through in the city center.
The destination includes the Domplatz to the West, Mozartplatz to the East, Residenzplats to the North, Kapitelplats to the South.

Moreover, if you are planning to enter the cathedral, there is no entrance fee but donation required. If you want a guided tour there is a ticket booth that cost €5 for adult, the good thing is, children below 15 years old are free. These will give you an opportunity to expand your knowledge based on Salzburg's history, culture, and how the Dom is constructed in detail. Plus, you will be able to see a clearer structure of the entire city view of Salzburg especially if you have more time to explore the city.

Where to Eat

We ended our trip having our late afternoon meal and ended up at Mister Le Healthy Asia.

Authentic Vietnamese Pho Bo is what we're craving for, would highly recommend because it is super delish! They serve a big bowl that can be shared for two, for the price of almost €9.50 only!

Definitely a good price, quality, and friendly atmosphere. The place is just a small kiosk and most seating arrangements are outside. Many customers are also there to dine in. A menu of Thai, Vietnamese and Asian cuisine.

For further details of the menu and price list, you may have a look at this SITE. Cheers!

aweee thank you @livingUKTaiwan, I am delighted to be featured again in Daily Traveldigest , it means so much to me <3 <3 <3

How gorgeous are these photos. Although I'd be hard pressed to stay in a place called hotel neutor. I've heard too many stories on the internet about people waking up in bathtubs in foreign countries missing body parts. I plan on keeping that one in particular.

the hotel is expensive because it is the summer months and we booked on the same day.

the stories you've mentioned sound scary , we haven't thought about that.

Thank you for dropping by @hidave
