Greetings hivers and welcome to my blog. Last year I went on a hike to Waraira Repano National Park, popularly known as El Avila, this park is located in the Coastal Chain within the Coastal mountain range, in north-central Venezuela, and its extension extends from the capital, Caracas (Capital District), the entire north of the Miranda state and the south of the La Guaira state. It's one of the busiest national parks in the country, not only for its impressive nature and hiking routes but also for the variety of activities it offers to the visitors, including the cable car.
El Waraira Repano fue declarado parque nacional en 1958, y es el pulmón vegetal de la ciudad capital y una de sus principales atracciones turísticas. Tiene una extensión aproximada de 851,92 km² y altitudes que oscilan desde los 120 hasta los 2765 msnm, en el Pico Naiguatá, su punto más alto.
Waraira Repano was declared a national park in 1958, and is the green lung of the capital city and one of its main tourist attractions. It has an approximate area of 851.92 km² and altitudes that range from 120 to 2765 meters above sea level, at Pico Naiguatá, its highest point.
He ido en otras ocasiones al Ávila, sin embargo, esta sería la primera vez que subiría hasta el pico el Ávila a pie por una de sus tantas rutas. La excursión salía desde la ciudad donde vivo, La Victoria, a las 5:30 de la mañana, o al menos eso era lo planificado jajaja, porque al final salimos a las 6. Yo salí de mi casa a las 5 de la mañana pero como a esa hora no hay autobuses tuve que caminar una media hora para llegar al lugar de encuentro 🥴🥵, así que llegué con un previo calentamiento jejeje.
I have gone to Ávila on other occasions, however, this would be the first time I would climb to Avila Peak on foot along one of its many routes. The excursion left from the city where I live, La Victoria, at 5:30 in the morning, or at least that was what was planned hahaha, because in the end we left at 6. I left my house at 5 AM but like that time there are no buses I had to walk for half an hour to get to the meeting place 🥵🥴, so I arrived with a previous warm-up hehehe.
Se supone que mi hermana también vendría a esta excursión, pero al final, el organizador no nos quiso reconocer los dos pagos de la otra excursión que nos perdimos porque el autobús nos dejó 😠🤬 Así empezó este lio o esta estafa. Lo que nos molestó fue que él nos garantizó que los $10 que cada una habíamos pagado, los podíamos usar para la siguiente excursión, que era esta, y después nos salió con que sólo nos validaría un cupo 😡🤬. Así que le dije a mi hermana que fuera ella pero ella dijo que fuera yo hasta que al final, pues fui yo 🤷🏻♀️ para no perder esos $10, pero eso nos molestó muchísimo.
My sister was also supposed to come on this excursion, but in the end, the organizer didn't want to acknowledge the two payments for the other excursion that we missed because the bus left us 😠🤬 This is how this mess or this scam started. What bothered us was that he guaranteed us that the $10 that each of us had paid could be used for the next excursion, which was this one, and then he told us that he would only validate one place for us 😡🤬. So I told my sister to go her but she said to go me until in the end, well it was me 🤷🏻♀️ so as not to lose that $10, but that bothered us a lot.
Faltando unos diez minutos para las 8 llegamos a la entrada del Waraira Repano por el sector Chacaíto, la cual está en plena autopista, nos bajamos de los autobuses y nos reunimos para escuchar las recomendaciones y consejos del guía que nos iba a acompañar en esta ruta, finalizado esto empezó la caminata ⛰️🏃🏻♀️.
With about ten minutes to 8 AM we arrived at the entrance to Waraira Repano in the Chacaíto sector, which is on the highway, we got off the buses and met to listen to the recommendations and advice of the guide who was going to accompany us on this route, after this the walk began ⛰️🏃🏻♀️.
Hay más de 100 rutas para llegar hasta el pico el Ávila, la ruta que haríamos nosotros empezaba, como les dije, en la entrada de Quebrada Chacaíto, siguiendo por la parte alta de Sabas Nieves II, nuestra ruta incluía, el Banquito, No te apures, La silla, desde donde se ve el mar de la Guaira, pico occidental, Lagunazo y finalmente se llega al pico el Ávila.
There are more than 100 routes to get to Avila Peak, the route we would take began, as I told you, at the entrance to Quebrada Chacaíto, following the upper part of Sabas Nieves II, our route included El Banquito, No te apures, La Silla, from where you can see Guaira see, western peak, Lagunazo and finally reach Avila Peak.
El parque Waraira Repano tiene un clima de montaña con una temperatura media de 13° y posee una gran variedad de flora y fauna, destacando las orquídeas, helechos, bromeliáceas, aráceas, y en cuanto a la fauna, tenemos la zarigüeya (Didelphis marsupialis), varias especies de murciélagos, el venado matacán (Mazama gouazoubira), el zorro, el cachicamo o armadillo (Dasypodidae), el cunaguaro (Leopardus pardalis), la lapa (Cuniculus paca), ardillas, el picure (Dasyprocta fuliginosa), el puercoespín y el puma entre otros, aves como la guacharaca (Ortalis ruficauda), el cristofue (Pitangus sulphuratus), el querrequerre o urraca verde (Cyanocorax yncas), el turpial (Icterus icterus) y aproximadamente unas 36 especies de colibríes, también se consiguen una gran variedad de reptiles como la serpiente cascabel, la tigra mariposa (Bothrops venezuelensis), varias especies de corales (Micrurus isozonus y Micrurus mipartitus semipartitus), y también son muy comunes el camaleón y la iguana. En el parque viven muchas especies de escorpiones venenosos así como cangrejos de agua dulce.
The Waraira Repano park has a mountain climate with an average temperature of 13° and has a great variety of flora and fauna, highlighting orchids, ferns, bromeliads, araceae, and as for fauna, we have the opossum (Didelphis marsupialis), several species of bats, the matacan deer (Mazama gouazoubira), the fox, the armadillo (Dasypodidae), the ocelote (Leopardus pardalis), the limpet (Cuniculus paca), squirrels, the picure (Dasyprocta fuliginosa), the porcupine and the puma among others, birds such as the guacharaca (Ortalis ruficauda), the cristofue (Pitangus sulphuratus), the green magpie (Cyanocorax yncas), the turpial (Icterus icterus) and approximately 36 species of hummingbirds, a wide variety of reptiles are also found such as the rattlesnake, the tiger butterfly (Bothrops venezuelensis), several species of corals (Micrurus isozonus and Micrurus mipartitus semipartitus), and chameleons and iguanas are also very common. Many species of poisonous scorpions as well as freshwater crabs live in the park.
La primera parte de la ruta es asfaltada y el terreno es bastante empinado, el día estaba muy nublado aunque no hacía mucho frío. Cuando llegamos al puesto de guardaparques, nos encontramos con dos vías, una ancha y asfaltada a través de la cuál subía y bajaba mucha gente que hacía ejercicio, y la otra, mucho más estrecha y de tierra que conducía hacia una de las rutas montaña adentro, esa era nuestra ruta ⛰️🏃🏻♀️👊🏻🥾.
The first part of the route is paved and the terrain is quite steep, the day was very cloudy although it was not very cold. When we arrived at the park ranger station, we found two roads, one wide and paved through which many people who were exercising went up and down, and the other, much narrower and dirt that led to one of the routes into the mountain, that was our route ⛰️🏃🏻♀️👊🏻🥾.
Este ascenso no es nada sencillo, la tierra es resbaladiza, y en muchas partes no hay donde apoyarse para subir, también hay rocas sueltas y raíces de árboles que pueden hacerte tropezar si andas distraído, así que hay que ir con cuidado y bien concentrado en el camino 😉.
This ascent is not easy at all, the ground is slippery, and in many places there is no place to lean on to climb, there are also loose rocks and tree roots that can make you trip if you are distracted, so you have to be careful and concentrate on the path 😉.
Después del largo y empinado camino de tierra se llega a una parte más plana de espeso bosque y donde el suelo está cubierto de hojas, a esa hora había empezado a salir un poco el sol aunque la neblina seguía cubriendo con su manto el camino. Yo me había adelantado bastante así que la mayor parte del camino la hice junto al guía y otras dos personas.
After the long and steep dirt road you reach a flatter part of thick forest and where the ground is covered with leaves. At that time the sun had begun to rise a little although the fog continued to cover the road with its mantle. I had gone quite far ahead so I did most of the way with the guide and two other people.
Mientras caminamos en ese espeso bosque, aislados del bullicio de la ciudad, escuchando sólo los sonidos de la naturaleza y los latidos de nuestro corazón, la mente se resetea, los pensamientos se alejan y nuestros sentidos se activan, observamos, escuchamos, saboreamos y sentimos mejor todo lo que nos rodea. En esta parte de la ruta empezó a lloviznar un poquito pero afortunadamente no duró mucho.
While we walk in that thick forest, isolated from the hustle and bustle of the city, listening only to the sounds of nature and the beats of our heart, the mind resets, thoughts drift away and our senses activate, we observe, listen, taste and feel better everything around us. On this part of the route it started to drizzle a little but fortunately it didn't last long.
La última parte del trayecto es fuerte y hay que usar piernas y manos para subir, yo estaba tan concentrada y enfocada en el suelo que no me percate cuando llegué al pequeño balconcito de madera que está en la cima jajaja, ahí escuché la voz del guía diciendo, "ya llegamos". Cuando llegué ahí y miré hacia arriba ví una enorme bandera de Venezuela ondeando entre la niebla, habíamos llegado a nuestra meta, el pico Ávila, a 2000 metros, hice la ruta en tres horas y media, y estuve entre los primeros que llegamos a la cima 😃💪🏻.
The last part of the journey is steep and you have to use your legs and hands to climb, I was so concentrated and focused on the ground that I didn't notice when I reached the small wooden balcony at the top hahaha, there I heard the guide's voice saying, "we arrived". When I got there and looked up I saw a huge Venezuelan flag waving in the fog, we had reached our goal, Avila Peak, 2000 meters, I made the route in three and a half hours, and I was among the first to reach the top 😃💪🏻.
Apenas llegué me senté a descansar y a comer disfrutando de la espectacular vista que se puede apreciar desde ahí, aunque la neblina tapaba casi todo jajaja 🥴, todos estábamos felices y cada vez que llegaba alguien a la cima lo aplaudíamos y lo felicitábamos a la venezolana, eso significa, con muchos gritos y ruido jajaja. Los turistas que caminaban por ahí nos miraban y se reían jejeje.
As soon as I arrived I sat down to rest and eat enjoying the spectacular view that can be seen from there, although the fog covered almost everything hahaha 🥴, we were all happy and every time someone reached the top we applauded and congratulated them in the Venezuelan way, that means, with a lot of shouts and noise hahaha. The tourists walking by looked at us and laughed hehehe.
Luego de comer me puse a conversar y bromear con otros senderistas, como me había quitado el bolso de la espalda y estaba sudada me empezó a dar frío 🥶, así que me lo volví a poner jajaja, la verdad es que arriba en el pico Humboldt hace mucho frío y la neblina seguía densa, tanto así que hasta se me había olvidado que el hotel estaba detrás 🤦🏻♀️😂😂😂. Al rato el sol empezó a apoderarse del lugar y la neblina se fue esfumando y ahí apareció el hotel Humboldt y dije: "Pero claro, si aquí atrás está el hotel jajaja 🤦🏻♀️".
After eating I started talking and joking with other hikers, since I had taken my bag off my back and I was sweaty I started to get cold 🥶, so I put it back on hahaha, the truth is that up on Avila Peak it's very cold and the fog was still dense, so much so that I had even forgotten that the hotel was behind 🤦🏻♀️😂😂😂. After a while the sun began to take over the place and the fog disappeared and there the Humboldt hotel appeared and I said: "But of course, the hotel is back here hahaha 🤦🏻♀️".
Para calentarme un poquito decidí ir a caminar por la hermosa vía que está en la cima y donde podemos disfrutar de gastronomía, venta de flores, frutas, dulces, etc. También hay artistas ambulantes que ofrecen su arte a los visitantes.
To warm up a little I decided to go for a walk along the beautiful path that is at the top and where we can enjoy gastronomy, sales of flowers, fruits, sweets, etc. There are also traveling artists who offer their art to visitors.
Por esta vía peatonal también transitan los pequeños autos del hotel Humboldt que llevan a los turistas a sus instalaciones. Era día sábado y la verdad es que vi turistas de todas las nacionalidades, asiáticos, africanos, personas del medio oriente o árabes, muchos angloparlantes y por supuesto, también muchos venezolanos. Había mucha gente ese día y eso me alegró mucho, sobretodo sabiendo lo costosa que es la estadía en este hotel, $300 🥴😬 (una noche para dos personas con desayuno incluído). Los que deseen conocer el interior y los alrededores del hotel, pueden comprar las entradas y los llevan a un tour por todas sus instalaciones.
The Humboldt Hotel's small cars also travel along this pedestrian street, taking tourists to its facilities. It was a Saturday and the truth is that I saw tourists of all nationalities, Asians, Africans, people from the Middle East or Arabs, many English speakers and of course, also many Venezuelans. There were a lot of people that day and that made me very happy, especially knowing how expensive a stay at this hotel is, $300 😬🥴 (one night for two people with breakfast included). Those who wish to see the interior and surroundings of the hotel can purchase tickets and be taken on a tour of all its facilities.
En esta parte del parque hay varios restaurantes que ofrecen menús muy variados, un banco, una pista de patinaje sobre hielo y un espacio para emprendedores donde los visitantes y turistas pueden adquirir diversos productos artesanales como jabones, aceites esenciales, tejidos, pulseras, etc.
In this part of the park there are several restaurants that offer very varied menus, a bank, an ice skating rink and a space for entrepreneurs where visitors and tourists can purchase various artisan products such as soaps, essential oils, fabrics, bracelets, etc.
A las 2 de la tarde todavía seguían llegando senderistas de nuestro grupo 😳, bueno, cada quien va a su ritmo pero parece que estos como que se sentaron a dormir jajaja 🤷🏻♀️. Nuestro grupo estaba distribuido en tres camionetas (autobuses), y había gente de La Victoria, (la ciudad donde vivo), San Juan, Turmero, San Mateo, Maracay e incluso algunas personas de Caracas que nos estaban esperando entrando a la ciudad capital para venirse con nosotros en el autobús, en total éramos unas 150 personas más o menos.
At 2 in the afternoon hikers from our group were still arriving 😳, well, everyone goes at their own pace but seems like these guys just sat down to sleep hahaha 🤷🏻♀️. Our group was distributed in three buses, and there were people from La Victoria, (the city where I live), San Juan, Turmero, San Mateo, Maracay and even some people from Caracas who were waiting for us entering the capital city to came with us on the bus, in total we were about 150 people or so.
Después de dar varias vueltas por el lugar, decidí bajar, los senderistas pueden bajar por el teleférico de manera gratuita, el organizador de la caminata había pautado las 4 de la tarde como hora de encuentro para irnos, obviamente había que bajar antes. A las 2:30 ya estaba en la parada de las cabinas para bajar, iba a bajar con otras personas de mi grupo pero a ellos les faltaba un compañero así que fueron a buscarlo y yo bajé sola, una cabina solo para mi jejeje.
After walking around the place several times, I decided to go down, hikers can go down the cable car for free, the organizer of the walk had scheduled 4 in the afternoon as the meeting time to leave, obviously we had to go down earlier. At 2:30 I was already at the cabin stop to get off, I was going to get off with other people in my group but they were missing a companion so they went to look for him and I went down alone, a cabin just for me hehehe.
Las cabinas tienen capacidad para ocho personas, yo aproveché que estaba sola y puse la cámara de mi teléfono en automático y me divertí tomando fotos locas de mi misma dentro de la cabina 🤪🤭😂, bueno, también tomé algunas serias jajaja 👍🏻. Las vistas son espectaculares y aunque muchas personas sólo agachan la cabeza y se tapan los ojos porque les da pánico subir al teleférico, a mi me encanta jajaja. El recorrido dura unos 20-25 minutos.
The cabins have capacity for eight people, I took advantage of the fact that I was alone and put my phone's camera on automatic and I had fun taking crazy photos of myself inside the cabin 🤪🤭😂, well, I also took some serious ones hahaha 👍🏻. The views are spectacular and although many people just lower their heads and cover their eyes because they are scared to get on the cable car, I love it hahaha. The tour lasts about 20-25 minutes.
Cuando llegué abajo aproveché de dar unas vueltas para conocer el lugar puesto que en esta parte hay centros de entretenimiento para niños y adultos, wi-fi libre, puestos de comida rápida, cajeros, zona de tragos y por supuesto, abajo están las taquillas donde se adquieren las entradas para subir al teleférico. Ese día era la final de la champions ⚽🏆, Manchester city contra el Inter de Milán, así que había una gran pantalla para los que quisieran disfrutar del partido. Luego de tomar algunas fotos me senté en un banquito a esperar que todos bajaran.
When I arrived at the bottom, I took the opportunity to walk around to get to know the place since in this part there are entertainment centers for children and adults, free Wi-Fi, fast food stands, cashiers, a drinks area and of course, downstairs are the ticket offices where tickets are purchased to take the cable car. That day was the Champions League final ⚽🏆, Manchester City against Inter Milan, so there was a big screen for those who wanted to enjoy the game. After taking some photos I sat on a bench to wait for everyone to get off.
Ya eran casi las 4 de la tarde y aunque la mayor parte de nuestro grupo había bajado, todavía había gente arriba, el organizador estaba bastante molesto porque todos sabíamos que había que estar abajo antes de las 4, pero bueno, siempre hay gente que hace esperar a los demás 🙄🤷🏻♀️. Sin embargo el organizador dió la orden de ir saliendo del parque para caminar hacia nuestros autobuses que estaban estacionados a unos pocos metros de ahí.
It was already almost 4 in the afternoon and although most of our group had gone down, there were still people above, the organizer was quite upset because we all knew that we had to be down before 4, but hey, there are always people who make others wait 🙄🤷🏻♀️. However, the organizer gave the order to leave the park to walk towards our buses that were parked a few meters away.
Eran las 4:30 y sólo estábamos 12 personas montadas en el autobús donde me tocaba 🙄😒, en los otros autobuses ya estaban casi todos pero siempre salimos juntos así que tenían que esperar por nosotros 🤷🏻♀️. Finalmente, a las 5 salimos de regreso a La Victoria. Algunos estaban molestos pero ni modo, es mejor tomárselo con calma porque después es peor 🥴 jajaja 🤷🏻♀️.
It was 4:30 pm and there were only 12 people on the bus where I was 🙄😒, almost everyone was already on the other buses but we always leave together so they had to wait for us 🤷🏻♀️. Finally, at 5 we left back to La Victoria. Some were upset but no way, it's better to take it easy because it gets worse later 🥴 hahaha 🤷🏻♀️.
Estábamos cansados y muchos se quedaron dormidos durante el viaje 😴 jajaja pero disfrutamos de un día diferente, haciendo senderismo, apreciando la naturaleza, compartiendo y conociendo nuevos amigos caminantes.
We were tired and many fell asleep during the trip 😴 hahaha but we enjoyed a different day, hiking, appreciating nature, sharing and meeting new hiking friends.
Bueno amigos, espero que hayan disfrutado de este paseo tanto como lo hice yo. Si están en Venezuela y no conocen este ícono de Caracas, los invito a hacerlo, ya sea subiendo a pie por cualquiera de sus rutas o usando el teleférico, les aseguro que les encantará todo lo que verán. Σε ευχαριστώ πολύ, ναι, το Waraira Repano ή Ávila είναι πολύ ωραίο, πάει πάρα πολύ κόσμος για γυμναστική τα πρωινά, ανεβαίνουν με τα πόδια, με ποδήλατο ή τρέχοντας. Είναι o πνεύμονας του Καράκας καί τή όμορφο φαίνεται αυτό το βουνό όταν είσαι κάτω στην πόλη με την φασαρία, την κίνηση, κτλ. κοιτάζεις το Ávila και αμέσως αισθάνεσαι μία γαλήνη 🧘🏻♀️😌 χεχεχε.
😂😂😂😂😂😂 Πραγματικά μας έσπασε τα νεύρα, ειδικά της αδερφής μου που είναι και λίγο νευρική χαχαχα 😬🤭

🤦🏻♀️ qué te puedo decir, eso sucede cuando la gente no tiene palabra 🤨😒, le saca la piedra a los demás 😡, pero bueno. Si, esa ruta es bella y de puro bosque nublado jejeje.

Hahahaha, yes, I've done several hikes up this emblematic mountain of Caracas, I've gone up by the cable car other times, but this particular route I don't know it, for now only in photos 😭😆.

Yes, Waraira Repano or Avila is the icon of Caracas, people who live there love to go hiking, running, walking or go with their bycicles through the mountains 🚶🏻♀️🏃🏻♀️🚴🏻♀️. Yes, a lot of animals live there and also a lot of people have get lost in the park. Some have been found alive but others have been found dead 😥. Last week, a 43-year-old Chinese tourist, an engineer, who had gone hiking alone went missing. Firefighters, park rangers and other search agencies were looking for him until they found him dead seven days later in the lower part of the mountain. It seems that he was slipped and fell from about 30 meters high and died from a severe contusion to the head 😔.

Well, wilderness is beautiful but can be rough sometimes. People should have more respect for Mother Nature and her power. In my country, we have much smaller mountains than you in Venezuela but even here, several people die up there every year. Usually because they underestimate the weather or overestimate their skills and abilities...

Well, the truth is that a mountain doesn't have to be very high or complicated for someone to get lost or even die there, and it doesn't always have to do with the terrain, the weather can also kill you so must be really tough to get lost up in a Czech mountain in winter 😳😬🥶🥶🥶🥶. Although there are also several snow-capped peaks here in the Andes mountain range in the state of Mérida, but the temperature doesn't reach -20, -30 or -50 degrees below zero as in the southern part of this same mountain range (Chile, Peru, Argentina) or in Europe, Russia, Everest, North America or some other regions of the world where if you get lost in the mountains, only a miracle saves you from freezing to death 🥶🥶🥶🥶🤣🤣🤣🥴.

Really tough, having to eat a dead family member or a friend to survive is not at all something easy to do but the survival instinct will always be stronger because deep down and in extreme situations we are like any other animal, it's that or die 🤷🏻♀️.

El Ávila es único y especial, he ido solo tres veces en mi vida. Cada visita maravillosa, la última vez subí por el teleférico y es una gran experiencia, es tan rica la vista y poder disfrutar de un delicioso sandwich de pernil, por supuesto no puede faltar el chocolate caliente. Me gustaría volver se que hay muchos cambios. Un Abrazo viajera 🌿💙
Si, no importa cuántas veces vayas al Ávila, cada nueva visita es una experiencia diferente y ves algo que en la anterior no te habías fijado jajaja. La verdad es que todo es hermoso, el camino, el teleférico, la vegetación, las caminerias de arriba, los kioskos, el clima, la vista del mar 🌊, todo jajaja. Y por supuesto, el chocolate caliente ☕ aunque ese día no tomé porque había llevado papelón con limón y no quise mezclar.
Ojalá puedas volver a ir pronto, de verdad hay muchos cambios positivos, lo disfrutarás.
