We use to live up on the west coast of Scotland in Argyll, and often go back to visit. Not that long ago when back we took a trip to Tarbert, a village in southern Argyll. It has a ruined castle standing on the hill above it, and we took a hike up there to take in the views.
The castle is around 500 years old, and sits on a vantage point over the village, which has a natural port, and all of the approaches to the port - so from a defensive perspective, it was very will sited.
The village itself is very pretty and has grown up around the port. Its quite nice with quite a few art galleries, pubs, cafes and restaurants around the harbour.
There is very little left of the castle now, but its well worth the walk for the views, plus there is a few nice paths leading from it.
It was a lovely autumns day when we were there, with the sun casting lovely long shadows - and here is our family shadow portrait to prove it !
The castle is more a tower to be honest, but its officially called Tarbert Castle. The tower dates back to the time of James IV of Scotland.
While up the hill we spotted this lovely tree with beautiful red berries, which just looked stunning against the beautiful blue of the sky !
Although Tarbert was quite a strategic port back in its day, these days its quite popular with touring yachts. Yachting around the west coast and its island is a very popular thing, so marinas like this are common all up and down the west coast.
The tower is in a lovely setting, and its so worth the walk up the hill to see it - there are paths that take you up straight from the village, and it does not take too long.
We had a great day that day, and stopped for lunch in the village, and just had a nice time wandering around taking it all in. Very recommended if you are ever in the area !!!!

Aye - Tarbert is well worth adding to the list, just make sure you get to the correct one, as there are about 2 others with very similar spellings in Scotland - however, both of those are also pretty (win-win) !
