From the salt battlement | Desde la almena de sal (Eng. | Esp.)

in Pinmapple4 years ago (edited)

Greetings, dear community of #Haveyoubeenhere. In my previous post about the village of Araya (see here) I promised to make a new one about the castle which is its presentation, I could say.

Because of my attraction to spaces like this and my love of photography, in a visit made to the Araya Castle (Sucre State, Venezuela), I took a set of photos of that monument mistreated by the weather and the years, of which I give you here a selection.

The exact name of such a monument known as Araya Castle is Royal Fortress of Santiago de Arroyo de Araya. As indicated above, it is located in the Araya Peninsula, at the coordinates 10°34′47″N 64°15′28″O, as specified by Wikipedia. The historiography informs us that it was built by the Spanish, in their time of colonization of a great part of the Venezuelan territory, between 1623 and 1630, by royal decree. Its objective was mainly military: the defense of the salt mines in the area against the incursions of Dutch pirates, in the understanding that salt was by then an element as valuable as gold (in Spanish, the word salario is derived from sal). Its destruction was decreed by government order in 1761, as it was considered useless. Since our purpose is not historiographical, I leave for more information this link).

In the title of my post, I use the metaphor "almena de sal," created by the Venezuelan writer Gustavo Luis Carrera for the original title of a short story of his in which he discusses the life of Araya, his salt mines, and his buried history. I take some fragments of his story to accompany the photos.

"I was going towards the imposing fortress of yellowish stones as the one who was sure to find in those ruins something from very far back in time and the anxiety".

The ruins have a special appeal. As European Romanticism revealed in the 19th century, there is a poetic force in the ruins. The Spanish philosopher Maria Zambrano expresses it very well:

"From every ruin emanates something divine, something different that springs from the same entrails of human life".

The visit to the Castle of Araya confirms this sensitivity.

To see and enter the Castle of Araya is already in itself an almost initiatory experience, since it is to meet the matter of the memory, today demolished, sailed by the wind and the salt.

For example, to observe the material with which its blocks were made, from a mortar that incorporated, besides the sand and the lime, elements of the sea like shells.

"I see the unknown castle, I feel the skin eaten and sown with madriports of the stones [...]"

They attract architectural forms such as arches, of which there are visually very striking samples.

Being in this monument with its strategic geographical location, facing the wide Caribbean Sea, one cannot fail to experience its presence. The different views to the sea that we can have from it are an undeniable visual experience.

"I continued upstairs, to the highest point of the blown-up castle, and stopped in my tracks: I will never forget the blinding vastness of the sunny, blue, greenish sea, pale in the intervals of foam."

And if the sea is inseparable from this monument, so are its people; those who border it welcome it in their daily lives and those who guard it in some way: the noble people of Araya. As if it were a battlement to look at, the town is still there.

Saludos.
