Hello friends. On the recent post about my Lisbon travel, I mentioned that we had visited the Museu de Marinha in Lisbon and it was a fascinating experience for me. It is a maritime museum with many interesting exhibits from different eras of maritime history. If you happen to be visiting Lisbon or are already here, this is an absolute must-see place! So, today's post is all about our visit to this museum and the exhibits on display there.
There is a anchor monument at the entrance of the museum. It is located near Praça do Império. The building has a beautiful facade with columns and statues around it.
The museum displays several ships and other objects used by sailors throughout the ages. They have a lot of artifacts from the Age of Discovery, like Portuguese caravels, the famous Vasco da Gama ship, etc. There are also some very old models of ships that were used during World War II.
There was a lot of noteworthy stuff on the exhibits and I could spend hours reading about them. However, since I am not much of a reader, I tried to capture as much information as possible through pictures. Here are some of the photos from the museum:
This bombard was developed in 15th century, wrought iron cannon made for use on ships. It was primarily used against enemy warships.
Hundreds of objects recovered from shipwrecks are on display at the museum. These included amphorae, glass bottles, pottery jars, swords, knives, musical instruments, etc. Some of these objects were even dated back to ancient times.
Weapons used by mariners are displayed at the museum. These include axes, hooks, harpoons, spears, crossbows, bows, etc. These guns were used by the Portugues navy.
A statue of Vasco da Gama stands at the entrance of the museum. He was one of the first Europeans to reach India by sea.
The museum also houses several models of ships, which were used by various nations. One of the most interesting things in the museum is the model of a caravel. This is a small ship with two masts, built to sail long distances. It was developed by the Portuguese in 1499 and was used extensively by the explorers to explore the world.
A nice museum. Well worth a visit if you're in Lisbon.
