One of the things I liked most about my job at the hostel in Ushuaia was that I had the opportunity to interact with all the guests. My main task was to give directions for breakfast, so I had to talk to each one of them (which, by the way, also helped me to practice my English). This dynamic of being in contact with everyone staying there brought me new companions for the hikes, which was ideal for not having to go alone to the mountain and to explore beautiful places like Cerro del Medio in a group ❤️.
Una de las cosas que más me gustó de mi trabajo en el hostel de Ushuaia fue que tuve la oportunidad de interactuar con todos los huéspedes. Mi tarea principal consistía en dar las indicaciones para servirse el desayuno, por lo que obligatoriamente tenía que hablar con cada uno de ellos (algo que dicho sea de paso, también sirvió para que practicara mi inglés). Esta dinámica de estar en contacto con todos los allí hospedados me trajo nuevos compañeros para realizar las caminatas, lo cual fue ideal para no tener que ir sola a la montaña y para explorar en grupo lugares hermosos como el Cerro del Medio ❤️.
My level of "influence" was such among some guests that they would wait for me to finish working so that we could go for a walk together. My work shift ended at noon and although it might seem a little late to start a trek, they had no problem waiting for me. This wasn't so bad either, as Ushuaia's summer brought sunlight until 11 PM. I felt a bit special thanks to them adapting their personal trip to share it with me, which made me think that I made a good impression on them while I was doing my job- That December day, a group of four guests and I started a hike to Cerro del Medio, with a trailhead very close to our hostel. The hike was estimated at 3 hours one way, which we all considered short enough to do without difficulty. The trail started next to a hotel with a very steep slope, which in a few minutes offered a good view of the city 💕.
Mi nivel del "influencia" fue tal entre algunos huéspedes que ellos esperaban a que yo terminara de trabajar para que saliéramos a caminar juntos. Mi turno de trabajo terminaba al mediodía y a pesar de que podía parecer un poco tarde para iniciar un trekking, ellos no tenían problema en esperarme. Esto tampoco era tan malo, ya que el verano de Ushuaia traía consigo luz solar hasta las 11 PM. Me sentí un poco especial gracias a que ellos adecuaban su viaje personal para compartirlo conmigo, lo que me hizo pensar que les dí una buena impresión mientras hacía mi trabajo. Ese día de Diciembre, un grupo de cuatro huéspedes y yo iniciamos una caminata hasta el Cerro del Medio, con un inicio de sendero muy cerca de nuestro hostel. La caminata estaba estimada en 3 horas de ida, lo que todos consideramos corta como para poder hacer sin dificultad. El camino empezaba al costado de un hotel con una pendiente muy pronunciada, lo que en pocos minutos ya te ofrecía una buena vista de la ciudad 💕.
Next, the road came out into a space of "peat", something I had not known about until this trip. Peat is an organic material formed naturally from the decomposition of plant species, used as fertilizer for other crops. In appearance it looks like a mattress of rotting grass but without smell, so when you walk over it you bounce a little. According to my own conclusion, this is formed by the constant humidity in this area due to the snow and its freeze-thaw cycles. On the rest of my hikes we came across many peaty areas, so I easily recognized it afterwards 😃.
A continuación, el camino salía a un espacio de "turba", algo que yo no conocía hasta este viaje. La turba es un material orgánico formado naturalmente a partir de la descomposición de especies vegetales, utilizado como abono de otros cultivos. En su aspecto parece un colchón de pasto podrido pero sin olor, por lo que cuando le caminas por encima rebotas un poco. Según mi propia conclusión, esto se forma por la constante humedad que hay en esta zona debido a la nieve y sus ciclos de congelamiento y descongelamiento. En el resto de mis caminatas nos cruzamos con muchas zonas de turba, por lo que luego la reconocía fácilmente 😃.
Of course, we could not miss a stretch in the forest until we reach the base of the mountain. In Ushuaia it is very common to see these forests of lenga trees, some very thin and tall, quite pale and recognizable. We also saw some very peculiar fungi called "digüeñes" or "pan de indio", which with their orange color parasitized the trees. In their decomposition, these fungi become dark masses on the trunks, but year after year, they re-emerge. These mushrooms are edible and we tried them: my companions liked them, but I did not because of their horrible chewy texture. Everyone has their own personal tastes 😂.
Por supuesto no podía faltar un tramo dentro del bosque hasta llegar a la base de la montaña. En Ushuaia es muy común ver estos bosques de árboles de lengas, unos muy finos y altos, bastante pálidos y reconocibles. También vimos unos hongos muy peculiares llamados "digüeñes" o "pan de indio", que con su color naranja parasitaban los árboles. En su descomposición, estos hongos se vuelven masas oscuras sobre los troncos, pero año tras año, vuelven a resurgir. Estos hongos son comestibles y los probamos: a mis compañeros les gustaron, pero a mí no por su textura chiclosa horrible. Cada quién con sus gustos personales 😂.
It was almost impossible to get lost on this trail because it was well marked with red and yellow markers, although I was glad I went with them because on the way we did not cross paths with anyone else. This middle hill is not as touristy as the Martial, but we had been told that it was worth going because of the beauty of the trail and so it was. Leaving the forest we found a small river that we had to follow on the side to complete our route and from there, we had a wider view of the whole city ❤️.
Era casi imposible perderse por este sendero porque estaba bien señalizado con marcas rojas y amarillas, aunque me alegré de haber ido con ellos porque en el camino no nos cruzamos con nadie más. Este cerro del medio no es tan turístico como el Martial, pero nos habían dicho que valía la pena ir por lo lindo del camino y así fue. Saliendo del bosque nos encontramos con un pequeño río que tuvimos que seguir por el costado para completar nuestra ruta y desde ahí, ya teníamos una vista más amplia de toda la ciudad ❤️.
As we climbed higher, we began to encounter parts of snow. We were already very close to summer, but on the high peaks everything was quite frozen. Most of the way we were able to dodge the snow and pass it on the side, although I was already prepared with my super waterproof boots that I had bought for this trip. The only thing I regretted was not taking poles that time, or even grabbing a branch, because there were some steep parts where I would have needed extra support 😅.
A medida que íbamos subiendo, nos empezamos a encontrar con partes con restos de nieve. Ya estábamos muy cerca del verano, pero en las altas cumbres todo estaba bastante congelado. La mayor parte del camino pudimos esquivar la nieve y pasarle por el costado, aunque yo ya estaba preparada con mis super botas impermeables que había comprado para este viaje. Lo único de lo que me lamenté es de no haber llevado bastones esa vez, o aunque sea de haber agarrado alguna rama, porque hubieron partes empinadas en que hubiese necesitado un apoyo extra 😅.
My hiking companions and I knew that we were not going to summit that day because we did not have the experience or the proper equipment, but we still wanted to climb as far as possible. To continue the trail in that part it was already necessary to walk above the snow and after some discussion, we climbed up a previously marked trail. My companion plunged her pole to the ground and the layer was about 50 cm, but as it was so packed and compact we were not going to sink and so we did 😅.
Mis compañeros de caminata y yo sabíamos que ese día no íbamos a hacer cumbre porque no teníamos la experiencia ni el equipo adecuado, pero igualmente teníamos ganas de subir hasta donde fuera posible. Para continuar el sendero en esa parte ya era necesario caminar por encima de la nieve y después de debatirlo un rato, subimos por una huella previamente marcada. Mi compañera hundió su bastón hasta el suelo y la capa era de unos 50 cm, pero como estaba tan pisada y compacta no íbamos a hundirnos y así fue 😅.
After the ascent, we found a melted area with stones indicating that other hikers had also made a "summit" in that area, so we stayed there to rest. The view from that part of the mountain was very nice, and we could see the city enclosed between two slopes. Maybe that's why some witty person named it "Cerro del Medio" (middle hill), or because it is in a straight line to the center of the city. In any case, it was worth the effort to get there, as we were able to confirm that the city of Ushuaia is beautiful from any point of view ❤️.
Después de la subida, nos encontramos una zona derretida con piedras que indicaban que otros caminantes también habían hecho "cumbre" en esa zona, así que nos quedamos ahí a descansar. La vista desde esa parte de la montaña era muy linda, y se veía la ciudad encerrada entre dos pendientes. Quizás por eso algún ocurrente lo nombró como Cerro del Medio, o porque se encuentra en línea recta al centro de la ciudad. Sea como sea, valió la pena haber llegado hasta ahí ya que pudimos confirmar que la ciudad de Ushuaia es hermosa desde cualquier punto de vista ❤️.
Walking along the trail to Cerro del Medio was a great adventure for everything we saw: waterfalls, forest, peat, river, snow, good scenery. BUT, the most fun of all was that we went down that last snow slope, sliding style. Before this trip, I hadn't been in snow since 2011 so of course I did my best to have fun without any problems. I was glad to have had a great day, and to have crossed paths with people who decided to share that experience with me 😃.
Pasear por el sendero hacia el Cerro del Medio fue una gran aventura por todo lo que vimos: cascadas, bosque, turba, río, nieve, buen paisaje. PERO, lo más divertido de todo este fue que esa última pendiente de nieve la bajamos al estilo tobogán. Antes de este viaje, yo no venía nieve desde el 2011 así que por supuesto que hice todo lo posible para divertirme sin problemas. Me alegré de haber tenido un gran día, y de haberme cruzado con personas que hayan decidido compartir esa experiencia conmigo 😃.
