After having covered as much as we could during our days in the town of El Chaltén, it was time for the second part of our trip. This implied having to retrace our steps, but we had decided to do it in this order because we wanted to arrive with all the energy to do the beautiful trekking that awaited us there. Although my final conclusion later was that I would have liked to have stayed more in that area of the province of Santa Cruz, walking among the beautiful mountains, I think that what we saw had been more than good and my cousin and I were happy to go to our second stop: the city of El Calafate ❤️.
Después de haber recorrido todo lo que pudimos durante nuestros días en el pueblo de El Chaltén, llegó el momento de la segunda parte de nuestro viaje. Esto implicaba tener que retroceder sobre nuestros pasos, pero lo habíamos decidido en este orden porque queríamos llegar con toda la energía para hacer los hermosos trekkings que nos esperaban allá. Aunque mi conclusión final después fue que me hubiese gustado quedarme más en esa zona de la provincia de Santa Cruz, caminando entre las hermosas montañas, creo que lo que vimos había estado más que bien y mi prima y yo nos fuimos contentas a nuestra segunda parada: la ciudad de El Calafate ❤️.
To get to this part of our country we had to take a flight to the El Calafate airport. When we arrived, we immediately took a bus that took us to the town of El Chaltén, 200 km from where we were. After finishing our walk there we took the bus back to the city. This trip lasted approximately 3 hours: the good thing is that since we traveled at noon, we were able to reach the city with time to explore it a little before it got dark 😃.
Para llegar a esta parte de nuestro país tuvimos que tomar un vuelo hasta el aeropuerto de El Calafate. Cuando llegamos, inmediatamente tomamos un micro que nos llevó hasta el pueblo de El Chaltén, a 200 km de donde estábamos. Después de terminar nuestro paseo por allá tomamos el micro de regreso hacia la ciudad. Este viaje duró unas 3 horas aproximadamente: lo bueno es que como viajamos al mediodía, pudimos llegar a la ciudad con tiempo de recorrerla un poco antes de que se hiciera de noche 😃.

There is a great contrast between the town of El Chaltén and the city of El Calafate. The first place we were in was noticeably smaller, low buildings, few businesses and very oriented towards mountain tourism. On the other hand, the city of El Calafate is much more urbanized, it has hotels, important avenues, all the services, restaurants, excursion centers and of course it has more inhabitants. This city is completely prepared to receive the tourism that comes here from all over the world with the idea of visiting the beautiful Perito Moreno Glacier, among other wonders of the area 😃.
Existe un gran contraste entre el pueblo de El Chaltén y la ciudad de El Calafate. El primer lugar en el que estuvimos era notablemente más pequeño, construcciones bajas, pocos negocios y muy orientada al turismo de montaña. En cambio, la ciudad de El Calafate está muchísimo más urbanizada, cuenta con hoteles, avenidas importantes, todos los servicios, restaurantes, centros de excursiones y por supuesto tiene más habitantes. Esta ciudad está completamente preparada para recibir al turismo que llega acá desde todo el mundo con la idea de visitar el hermoso Glaciar Perito Moreno, entre otras maravillas de la zona 😃.
When we did our last hike in El Chaltén to the condor viewpoint, the weather was quite cloudy and windy. When we arrived in El Calafate it was not that different: the forecast indicated rain, but we still went for a walk after settling in our other hostel. There really isn't that much to do in the city itself, just go for a walk along the waterfront and I think that's all if you don't have a vehicle to take you further. According to the recommendations I had seen, we could also go to a lagoon called Nímez by paying an entrance fee, but other travelers said that the same thing could be seen from the waterfront and for free. And they were right because we got to see quite a few birds during our hike 😃.
Cuando hicimos nuestra última caminata en El Chaltén hacia el mirador de los cóndores, el clima estaba bastante nublado y ventoso. Cuando llegamos a El Calafate no era tan diferente: el pronóstico indicaba lluvia, pero igual salimos a caminar un poco después de acomodarnos en nuestro otro hostel. En verdad no hay tanto para hacer en la ciudad en sí, solo ir a caminar por la costanera y creo que eso es todo si no tenes vehículo que te lleve más lejos. Según las recomendaciones que había visto, también podíamos ir a una laguna llamada Nímez abonando una entrada, pero otros viajeros dijeron que se veía lo mismo desde la costanera y gratis. Y tenían razón porque pudimos ver bastantes aves durante nuestra caminata 😃.
The forecast fulfilled what was promised and it started to rain at one point but luckily it was for a short time. Even though it was summer, it was 13°C that day and with the wind and rain it felt like more. My cousin and I suffer from the cold a lot but we didn't want to miss this place, so we went in the summer which is supposedly when it's hottest. If it was like that in summer I didn't even want to imagine in winter 😅.
El pronóstico cumplió con lo prometido y empezó a llover en un momento pero por suerte fue durante poco tiempo. A pesar de que era verano, ese día hacían 13°C y con el viento y la lluvia se sentía como más. Mi prima y yo sufrimos bastante el frío pero no queríamos perdernos este lugar, así que fuimos en verano que es cuando supuestamente hace más calor. Si así era en verano no me quería ni imaginar en el invierno 😅.
At the end of the route along the waterfront, which will only be about 10 blocks starting from the center, there was the typical poster of letters in which everyone (including me) wants to have a photo to show off on our social networks. While I was there I couldn't stop thanking the Universe for the opportunity to be there: I had bought this flight more than three months in advance and the time had finally come to enjoy it ❤️.
Al final del recorrido por la costanera, que tendrá solo unas 10 cuadras partiendo desde el centro, estaba el típico cartel de letras en el que todos (incluída yo) queremos tener una foto para alardear en nuestras redes sociales. Mientras estaba ahí no podía dejar de agradecer al Universo la oportunidad de estar allí: este vuelo lo había comprado con más de tres meses de anticipación y al fin había llegado el momento de poder disfrutarlo ❤️.
But of course, our walk there was not for nothing: on the way we had bought some portions of cake that we wanted to eat looking at the water of the great Argentino Lake. When it started to rain, we feared that our picnic in the open air would be ruined, but luckily it was not like that and we were able to meet our goal 😅.
Pero claro, nuestra caminata hasta ahí no fue por nada: en el camino habíamos comprado unas porciones de torta que queríamos comer mirando el agua del gran Lago Argentino. Cuando empezó a llover temimos que nuestra merienda al aire libre se arruine, pero por suerte no fue así y pudimos cumplir nuestro objetivo 😅.
I think that this walk is a good option to be a little in contact with nature and get away from the noise of the city center. Also to do something that is free is not bad: the city of El Calafate is one of the most expensive destinations for us Argentines. This is because it is a place highly chosen by foreigners due to the glacier, so everything is dollarized. When we saw that in a restaurant a plate of pasta cost 4,000 ARS (approx. 12 USD) we were grateful for having booked a hostel where we could cook our own food 😂.
Pienso que este paseo es una buena opción para estar un poco en contacto con la naturaleza y alejarse un poco del ruido del centro de la ciudad. También para hacer algo que sea gratis que mal no viene: la ciudad de El Calafate es uno de los destinos más costosos para nosotros los argentinos. Esto es porque es un lugar muy elegido por los extranjeros debido al glaciar, entonces todo está dolarizado. Cuando vimos que en un restaurante un plato de pastas costaba 4000 ARS (12 USD aprox) agradecimos haber reservado un hostel en donde podíamos cocinar nuestros propios alimentos 😂.
Another of the good things about going in the high summer season is that it got dark quite late, so much so that you lost track of time. That day we were on the street hanging around the waterfront and then downtown until about 9 PM and it was still pretty light. I've seen pictures further south where there's sunlight until 11 PM, that would be amazing to see, and I'm sure I'll do it one day 😅.
Otra de las cosas buenas de haber ido en la temporada alta de verano es que oscurecía bastante tarde, tanto que perdías la noción del horario. Ese día estuvimos en la calle dando vueltas por la costanera y luego el centro hasta como las 9 PM y todavía estaba bastante claro. He visto fotos más al sur en donde hay luz solar hasta las 11 PM, eso sería increíble de ver, y estoy segura de que algún día lo voy a hacer 😅.
My opinion regarding this city is that of course it is the best to be close to the glacier or have a quiet and restful family vacation, but if you like adventure, exploring, walking and you don't have your own vehicle, it would be better if you choose another place where you have more options. Or maybe I think this because I fell in love with El Chaltén: my trips are never restful, I always want to be on the move or see new places. Luckily we chose our stay here well, just two nights for the main trip, which was to see the glacier and then to be near the airport. That was more than enough 😃.
Mi opinión respecto a esta ciudad es que por supuesto es la mejor para estar cerca del glaciar o tener unas vacaciones familiares tranquilas y de descanso, pero si te gusta la aventura, recorrer, caminar y no tenes vehículo propio, seria mejor que elijas otro lugar en donde tengas más opciones. O quizás pienso esto porque me enamoré de El Chaltén: mis viajes nunca son de descanso, siempre quiero estar en movimiento o viendo lugares nuevos. Por suerte elegimos bien nuestra estadía acá, solo dos noches para el paseo principal que fue ir a conocer el glaciar y luego estar cerca del aeropuerto. Con eso fue más que suficiente 😃.

Que buenas son las reseñas que haces en tus posteos porque además de mostrarnos la belleza del lugar con las fotos y descripciones cargadas de sentimientos nos dejas entre ver las actividades que se pueden hacer en cada uno de los lugares.
A mi se me haría muy difícil elegir entre ambos sitios ya que cada uno tiene su encanto particular y su magia.
En lo personal sueño con conocer el Glaciar Perito Moreno. Con solo imaginarlo se me eriza la piel.
Lo que si hay que ir preparado con bastante plata por los precios por lo que pude leer. Sería bueno que los turistas nacionales tuvieran tratamiento diferencial en estos lugares para que sea accesible a muchas más personas.
Sos una gran inspiración personas como yo que disfrutan conociendo lugares y estando en contacto con la naturaleza.

Hola Pablo. La verdad que estar ahí es una sensación única, espero que puedas ir! Y los precios, solo hay tarifa diferencial en la entrada al parque, después en nada nada jaja. Te cobran las navegaciones y excursiones a más de 50.000 ARS sin ningún tipo de pena... Quizás cuando sea más millonaria pueda ir y hacerlas jaja, mientras tanto quedé conforme con lo que vi ❣️.

Thank you very much, it's good that you liked this place. The truth is that this whole area is beautiful, we wanted to explore it more, mainly the glaciers, but it's all so expensive... We did what we could.
And the two jobs, well, one is this one that I can handle online, and the other, are classes on demand and I can organize my own schedules so as to leave myself free for a week and travel. Luckily I can dispose of my free time quite well 😊.

El Calafate seems like such a beautiful city where to go for some stress free moments, create new memories and enjoy a bit of nature and urban life as well. I love this kind of places where there isn't a lot of people and you can hear the silence of nature <3

Vaya qué experiencia para inolvidable en El Calafate. Pienso en cómo está mi pueblo San Juan de los Morros donde la quema es lo que manda en estos 2 meses más calientes del año, marzo y abril, con temperaturas hasta de 40 grados. Cerros grises por la ceniza. Me gustó mucho ver estas imágenes.
