Exploring The Hidden And Secluded 100 Steps Beach!

A True Hidden gem!

HSB-0440.jpg

100 Steps Beach is nestled along the verdant north eastern coastline of the Caribbean island of Trinidad. It is referred to as 100 steps due to the man made concrete steps that leads the way down a steep hillside off of a mountain down to the sandy beach below! It is not that long of a hike but it takes a bit of effort but it definitely pays off with the amazingly clear waters and almost virgin sands. It is seldom visited but this day was a public holiday in the country and there were a little bit of people there much more than usual!

IMG_7096.JPG

The roadway was quite solitary and devoid of traffic as this side of the island is quite remote with hardly anyone here except for beach goers and people on long leisurely drives! Of course the cars you see parked there are near the entrance to the hiking trail to get down to the beach. As I mentioned there were so many people here at the beach as it was a public holiday!

IMG_7094.JPG

There was hardly any space left to park as persons had parked on both sides of the trail for as far along as they could until the pathway was impassible by car. I had to reverse all the way back out and park on the side of the road! It still was a great park under a large shady tree with lots of space.

I parked quickly and headed into the the trail. It was so peaceful and beautifully lined with bamboo and lush tropical vegetation. The sunlight filtered through the canopies creating heavenly splotches of light here and there. The track was quite straightforward and easy with no elevations of any sort so far and was so relaxing!

IMG_7103.JPG

Eventually after around a 5 minute walk, I got to a bend or a sharp corner in the trail that had a huge drop off! At this point I knew in my heart that the leisurely walk was over and it was time to sweat a little bit for the beauty that was to be experienced!

IMG_7106.JPG

IMG_7109.JPG

This is what the drop off looked like and the first glimpse of the steps that constituted the fabled one hundred! It does not look as intimidating in the photo but trust me, in real life, it was so steep, you'll see! And so the 100 steps down to the namesake beach below began!

IMG_7107.JPG

There was a colorful sign on a tree right next to the start of the stairway almost as if beach goers would not have known! I thought that to be quite funny! I quite like the vibrance and font of it and just had to take a quick snap before moving on!

IMG_7115.JPG

IMG_7116.JPG

At the end of that first staircase was a corner and this what I saw at the bottom of the other flight of stairs! It was a family taking their turns holding a rope trying to descend a rock face that seemed to have interrupted the flight of stairs! It seemed that the trail was getting harder! I thought it would have just been to walk down 100 steps but I was wrong! The dad went first, then he helped his little son and the mom!

IMG_7117.JPG

While I was waiting for them to finish and continue along, I stood at the top and waited not wanting to disturb them and cause an accident. I turned around to take a picture of the previous staircase that did not look steep in the other photo, now from this angle you can see how much of an incline it was on! I did not want to think about the walk back up just yet!

IMG_7128.JPG

As I went further along the steps, I met more beach goers taking their time along the trail. It was quite tricky to be honest. You can see the people in the shot above with their baskets of food and snacks as there are not beach facilities here, just pure virgin nature!

IMG_7129.JPG

Here is another shot looking back up from the pathway of stairs I had previously traversed so you can get an idea of how steep these steps were! Look at how amazingly breathtaking the vegetation is! It was so relaxing taking it all in and it did not at all feel real at times.

IMG_7138.JPG

Finally getting to the bottom of the stairway and only hearing the ocean's waves all along, finally there was a break in the canopies and the vibrant blue and turquoise of the ocean hit me in the face! I had been descending for around ten minutes now and the walk experience so far was amazing and this was just the delicious cherry on top!

IMG_7142.JPG

The sounds of the waves immediately brought my heart ease and serenity. Coming out of absolute shade under the trees and into the warm Caribbean sun was so heartwarming as well! Compared to all the other popular beaches at the time, one hundred steps was so underpopulated which contributed to the calm atmosphere. No loud music, no drinking and obnoxious bathers! Just families having fun!

IMG_7152.JPG

On the left side of the bay, the coastline was cut off by this large but beautifully intricate rock that provided shade and was part of the huge mountainside as well! It was so surreal and the photos do not at all do justice but I will try my best. You can see in the distance in the photos above how the rains were falling lower down the coastline which is way everyone has to pass and where all the popular beaches are. It was raining there at those beaches yet here at this hidden gem, there was sunshine and bliss!

IMG_7153.JPG

The right side of the bay had these little islets and coves that are quite unique this beach and what it is most famously recognised by! Anyone that visits here would post these views of the beach. Not to mention the clear pristine and almost virgin waters free of pollution and dredging.

HSB-0438.jpg

I could not wait to send up the drone and so some exploring of the coastline as both sides were blocked off by rocks and so on so I launched the it to see what I could discover! The first thing I saw was the lush verdant mountains that we had just driven through from the west that stretched along the whole island all the way towards Venezuela's direction. Shout out to all my Venezuelan neighbours on the platform!

HSB-0439.jpg

The eastern stretch of the coastline was much shorter as there was a sharp bend that carried the shore in a different direction and so much of it was invisible to me. You can see also a large hill and a solitary hotel or resort on top of some amazing cliffs, imagine the view! It also seemed to have a private and easy access stairway to another secluded bay from where we were.

HSB-0445.jpg

HSB-0465.jpg

There was this other bay closer to where we were lower down from the hotel and it was even more secluded and looked the hardest to get to and yet as you can see in the photo above, there was a couple there having the best time of their lives! I felt bad for intruding on their privacy so I did not go closer and moved quickly on!

HSB-0441.jpg

HSB-0460.jpg

On the other side, past the rock I was talking about on the left side of the 100 steps beach, was another secluded bay as well and this one also had a couple there having the time of their lives! This one was actually easy to get to as you just had to wade around the large rock! Now I know where to bring women on dates! The second photo above gives you a breathtaking view of how clear and pristine the waters were!

HSB-0446.jpg

There were also what seemed like large rocks that populated the waters and added texture and beauty to the waters! The waves were quite calm and clear and you could see all the way down to the bottom! These views were not at all possible from ground level due to specular reflections.

HSB-0447.jpg

One Hundred Steps Beach was sure an experience and a half and it was everything I was expecting and more! This was the first time visiting this beach and the journey took me to parts of my country (Trinidad) I had never driven in or step foot, or laid my eyes upon before. This is coming from someone who has been on every corner and every coastline exploring these twin islands! Thanks for coming along, Cheers!
