Nature At Its Best!

The Petit Trou Lagoon is an interesting location with a large inlet being surrounded by mangroves that is literally sealed off by a reef at in line with the outer coastline! Surf breaks or waves break on the reef and it looks awesome to see just a small fringe of waves being formed to seal off the lagoon with the shore on either side of the mouth of the said lagoon. We head to Lowlands in the Caribbean Island of Tobago and hike through a mangrove magical forest to get to the lagoon itself and fly the drone to see what we can explore!

Lowlands is a 20 minute drive from the airport and has some of the more expensive real estates in the whole island with awesome beach fronts and lovely ocean views. The weather was somewhat partly cloudy and resulted in the perfect weather and temperature for walking and exploring, just what we intended to do!

The mangrove forest had a wooden pathway all the way from the entrance to the lagoon that was so beautifully built, it felt like an enchanted gateway or bridge from a fairy tale! I could not believe that it was built all the way to the end but apparently it was. Mangroves are smelly gross things in my country yet here in our sister isle, it seemed to be something so beautiful!

It is impossible to walk through a mangrove forest as you can see by the root systems as well as the thick muddy silt that they grow in and so people never really get to walk in or through a mangrove forest and let me tell you, this was so amazing and ethereal! I could not get enough photos of the wooden walkway as we traversed it with picturesque wooden textures as well as the green and yellow leaves that seemed to perfectly complement it!

The trees grew in such a way that the roots and trunks were way past our heads and a heavenly canopy of green formed overhead almost like a cosy blanket shielding us from the Caribbean sun. This kind of made it unique to other types of forests during a hike where there would be leaves and green almost at every height. This made it feel so different and I guess more uniform as if manmade!

There were a few pathways that were blocked off due to overgrown branches and I assumed they did not lead anywhere we were not really wanting to go as the main path was clear and free. It was for a good reason though as I love to explore and would probably spend all day here before we actually got to the lagoon!

It was so interesting to see how whoever built this walkway managed to not entirely destroy the mangrove roots! In some places, they actually placed wooden planks in and around the roots in such an interesting manner! There was a gazebo as well with more example of how they built around the roots!

We finally got to a clearing where there was noticeably more light and the sounds of gentle waves. We had reached the end of the wooden pathway and the Petit Trou Lagoon! The narrow path widened into a large platform where one could sit, relax, take int eh views, fish or as we were about to do, fly the drone and explore the lagoon!

I launched the drone and took in the surroundings. The lagoon was as I expected, a large inlet of water surrounded on all sides by mangrove trees. I could see straight through to the bottom of the waters as the waters were quite calm and alarmingly shallow!

I decided to fly towards the mouth of the lagoon. You could see the waves cresting in the middle of the ocean from here near the mouth of the lagoon as well. To the left was a settlement with awesome beach front properties that I will be owning with well manicured lawns and even their own jetty in the lagoon itself! There were also patches of what looked like green seaweed that looked so vibrant and green!

I found a dude kayaking near the mouth and he looked quite startled to see the drone after I was following him for a while! I was using the DJI mini 2 here and it is quite small and hard to hear so when he did, I think it made him feel that loss of privacy being alone in such a huge body of water. Feeling bad, I quickly left him to his leisure boating!

I finally got the mouth of the lagoon on the left side! You can see the waves breaking where the fringe reef is that I was referring to earlier which we will be checking out next!

It was quite peculiar to see waves breaking seemingly in the middle of the ocean where there was no land but it was indeed because of the fringing reef that sealed the mouth of the lagoon! The colors of the water between the cresting waves were so beautiful and I loved how it looked like surf break was a line that sealed the mouth of the lagoon!

Petit Trou lagoon is a definite must visit for anyone visiting Tobago, especially for that amazing yet magical walk through an enchanting mangrove forest that is facilitated by the environmentally conscious wooden pathway! I was so happy with the photos I got during that, I did not care about anything else! This was quite the experience! Thanks a lot for coming along, cheers!
