After our awesome stay, sleeping in a Yurt directly at Tulum Beach, the next day we decided to move on and let the touristy part of the Riviera Maya behind us. Our next destination was: The lagoon of 7 Colors, better known as BACALAR!
We started to drive in the early afternoon along the highway towards Chetumal and arrived about 2,5 to 3hours later at our lovely Airbnb Cabin, right at the lake. It was small but comfortable including a bedroom, bathroom, and a little terrace. - A bit overpriced for what it was though.
The next morning we enjoyed a beautiful sunrise at the water. It is very special to see the sun coming up at this lake. It looks like painted when the color changes from different kinds of blue and green depending on the sun and the depth of the lake!
The lake is being generated because of 3 different cenotes located inside of it. Officially it is the biggest lake of Mexico considering that it's 42km long and 4km wide.
Bacalar village is located right next to the lagoon. The rest of its surroundings are mostly small hostels and hotels in the jungle where you can find a lot of fauna and flora.
The lake is known because of its beauty. Almost every accommodation counts with a private stay at the water and several hammocks. It is the perfect location to relax all day long, swim, and enjoy the beautiful view of the water. Often it just seems like being on the Maldives.
We wanted to get more active and rented some Stand-up Paddles to explore the lake while getting some tan. It is very easy to organize Kayaks, Catamarans, Boats, or Standup Paddles at this lake. Everything is about sustainable tourism, so exploring and appreciating nature comes first!
After doing sports for some hours we decided to go back and chill next to the stay in the water. It was so nice to be in the refreshing clear water. The colors are so beautiful and only the sweet taste of the water reminds you that you are not at the ocean.
After so much sport and activity we started to get hungry and went to the awesome restaurant Los Hechizos, that is specialized in Mexican food and highly rated! - I must say the food was delicious and that is a big compliment, considering that I live with a cook and she agreed.
We had natural lemonades with mint, Guacamole, chicken with rice, vegetables and beans, fish, and our friend ordered meat with potatoes and vegetables.
Eating all of this we fell right into the food coma. So we took a small Siesta sharing a hammock.
For the sunset, we jumped on the swing right next to the restaurant. It was the perfect spot to hang our feet in the refreshing water and have the best view.
These sunsets are just amazing! It is very rare to see something that beautiful, so we enjoyed it a lot!
The next day we rented a boat and explored the lake and its cenotes more detailed. But more about that soon, until then - Enjoy the video of the day:
Cheers,
Liz

Beautiful Photography and Video. Upvoted. Shared on Twitter.
Great post! It reminded me of this song called Bacalar --->
By the looks of it, seeing how the sky touches the horizon, it seems as if it is the sea and not at all a lake LOL. But as you mentioned, its one of the biggest ones in Mexico, you weren't kidding at all. Most lakes become algae green after some time but the lake here looks really refreshing, with a blue green color! I especially loved the sunset. Oh, I can only imagine sitting on a porch with that view.
I sure hope not. It is crazy how people ruin things by capitalizing on tourist spots. But beauty like this needs to be preserved for future generations to enjoy. No worries @lizanomadsoul, it is my pleasure.
Let's hope they will be able to save it! 🙂👍
Nice! I loved the Yucatan. You guys going to head down to Belize for a day or two? You're close and the snorkling and beaches there are beeeeautiful!!!
