One of the oldest Monasteries in the New World
Izamal is located between Valladolid and Mérida in the north of the Yucatan Peninsula. Today Izamal is a small sleepy nest, but at the time of the Maya the city was not much smaller than Chichén Itzá, with an area of ten square kilometres and important sanctuaries. When the Spanish began to knuckle down Yucatan, they built the monastery of San Antonio de Padua on a large Mayan pyramid. The walled precinct is often described as the second-largest monastery courtyard in the world: Only St. Peter's Square at the Vatican is bigger. The courtyard is certainly huge, but above all it seems extraordinarily empty on ordinary days. This is because tourism in Izamal is still limited, especially compared to Chichén Itzá.

Izamal liegt zwischen Valladolid und Mérida im Norden der Halbinsel Yucatan. Heute ist Izamal ein kleines verschlafenes Nest, doch zur Zeit der Maya war die Stadt mit zehn Quadratkilometern Ausdehnung und bedeutenden Heiligtümern nicht viel kleiner als Chichén Itzá. Als die Spanier begannen Yucatan zu unterwerfen, errichteten sie das Kloster San Antonio de Padua. Den Konvent bauten sie auf einer großen Maya-Pyramide. Der von einer Mauer umgebene Bezirk wird gerne als zweitgrößter Klosterhof der Welt bezeichnet: Größer sei nur der Petersplatz auf dem Vatikan. Gewiss ist der Hof riesig, vor allem aber wirkt er an gewöhnlichen Tagen außerordentlich leer. Denn in Izamal hält sich der Tourismus noch in Grenzen, besonders verglichen mit Chichén Itza.
Around 1532, the Spanish began in earnest to subjugate Yucatán coming from the newly conquered Aztec Empire. However, this took several decades and the attackers suffered many setbacks. Shortly after their arrival, missionaries began to build the Convento de San Antonio de Padua. Completed in 1561/1562, it is considered one of the oldest monasteries in the New World. The monastery stands partly on a Mayan pyramid. The whole complex, therefore, had to be raised to the appropriate height and is only accessible via ramps.
Etwa ab 1532 begannen die Spanier ernsthaft, ausgehend vom gerade eroberten Aztekenreich Yucatán zu unterwerfen. Das dauerte allerdings mehrere Jahrzehnte und die Angreifer erlitten viele Rückschläge. Schon kurz nach ihrer Ankunft begannen Missionare, den Convento de San Antonio de Padua zu bauen. Die 1561/1562 fertig gestellte Anlage gilt als eines der ältesten Klöster in der Neuen Welt. Das Kloster steht zum Teil auf einer Maya-Pyramide. Die ganze Anlage musste deshalb auf die entsprechende Höhe gebracht werden und ist nur über Rampen zugänglich.

75 round arches form a cloister that encloses a large open area 44 metres wide and 500 metres long. In June, the square is transformed into a stage in honour of Saint Anthony: the saint's day of remembrance in the liturgy of the Catholic Church is 13 June. On 15 August, the feast in honour of the Virgin Mary is also celebrated here.

August wird hier zudem das Fest zu Ehren der Heiligen Jungfrau Maria gefeiert.
Stones from the ancient Mayan sanctuaries are visible in the arcades of the cloister. The pyramids partly formed the foundation of the Spanish buildings, partly the stones were used to build the walls.
In den Arkaden des Kreuzgangs sind Steine aus den alten Maya-Heiligtümern sichtbar. Die Pyramiden bildeten teils das Fundament der spanischen Bauten, teils wurden die Steine für den Bau der Mauern verwendet.
In 1993, Pope John Paul II visited the monastery during his trip through Mexico and brought with him a silver crown for the statue of the Holy Virgin of Izamal, the patroness of Yucatan. He asked the inhabitants of the country to forgive for the violent missionary work. The Pope, who died in 2005, is highly revered in Yucatan and throughout Mexico.
Im Jahr 1993 besuchte Papst Johannes Paul II. während seiner Reise durch Mexiko das Kloster und brachte eine silberne Krone für die Statue der Heiligen Jungfrau von Izamal mit, der Schutzherrin von Yucatan. Die Einwohner des Landes bat er um Verzeihung für die gewaltsame Missionierung. Der 2005 verstorbene Papst wird in Yucatan und ganz Mexiko sehr verehrt.

Izamal bears the nickname »ciudad amarilla« (yellow city). The houses in the sleepy streets of Izamal are all yellow and white. This goes back to the Pope's visit, in honour of which the inhabitants painted all the walls in the colours of the Vatican.

Pyramid Kinich Kak Moo: A Magical Place
Pueblo Mágico (magical place) is an award conferred by the Secretariat of Tourism in Mexico to places with particularly well-kept architecture. Izamal is also a Pueblo Mágico. But the magic of the place only really reveals itself when you leave the monastery behind and turn your attention to the Kinich Kak Moo pyramid: a truly magical place.

About five minutes walk from the monastery and also in the middle of town there is Kinich Kak Moo. For me, it is one of the most beautiful pyramids in Yucatan, perhaps in all of Mexico. In any case, the ruins have a special atmosphere. When we arrived in the midday heat, a small group of Mayans was celebrating a ceremony. Two men and a woman stood on the highest point of the pyramid and turned alternately in the four directions, while one of them blew a conch shell. We only climbed onto the platform when the modern Mayan priests had finished their ceremony. Who knows, maybe they still occasionally sacrifice ignorant tourists to their old gods.
Gut fünf Minuten zu Fuß und ebenfalls mitten in der Stadt liegt Kinich Kak Moo. Für mich ist es eine der schönsten Pyramiden Yucatans, vielleicht ganz Mexikos. Auf jeden Fall strahlt die Ruine eine besondere Atmosphäre aus. Als wir in der Mittagshitze ankamen, zelebrierte eine kleine Gruppe von Maya gerade eine Zeremonie. Zwei Männer und eine Frau standen auf dem höchsten Punkt der Pyramide und wandten sich abwechselnd in die vier Himmelsrichtungen, während einer von ihnen in ein Muschelhorn blies. Wir kletterten erst auf die Plattform, als die modernen Maya-Priester mit ihrer Zeremonie fertig waren. Wer weiß, vielleicht opfern sie ihren alten Göttern gelegentlich noch ignorante Touristen.
With a side length of 200 metres and a height of 34 metres, Kinich Kak Moo is one of the largest pyramids in Mexico. From the platform, you have a good view of the monastery. In the background, the green wasteland of the northern Yucatan stretches out. Driving for hours through the waterless limestone plain, where dry forests stretch out – a rather boring landscape at first glance, but with spectacular ruins like Chichén Itzá and lively, beautiful towns like Mérida and Valladolid.
Mit 200 Metern Seitenlänge und 34 Metern Höhe gehört Kinich Kak Moo zu den größten Pyramiden Mexikos. Von der Plattform hat man einen guten Blick auf das Kloster. Im Hintergrund erstreckt sich die grüne Einöde des nördlichen Yucatan. Stundenlang fährt man durch die wasserlose Kalkebene, in der sich Trockwälder erstrecken – auf den ersten Blick eine eher langweilige Landschaft, aber mit spektakulären Ruinen wie Chichén Itzá und lebendigen, schönen Städten wie Mérida und Valldolid.
In Mexico, you will find piety that is hardly known in Europe. Let us hope that the Holy Virgin of Izamal will protect the city and its inhabitants from harm.
In Mexiko findet man eine Frömmigkeit, wie man sie in Europa kaum noch kennt. Hoffen wir, dass die Heilige Jungfrau von Izamal die Stadt und ihre Bewohner vor allem Unheil bewahrt.

Well it looks like you had quite the adventure in Mexico! Wonderful pictures and a lot of history there. It’s remarkable to see an old building like that, the monastery, built on top of an older structure. Glad the pope visited to apologize for the stuff the people went through.
Izamal is so small, but like a focal point it shows many sides of Mexico. I'm very glad you liked the post.
