I watched them from the terrace of my parents' flat. I was about 11 or 12 years old when I met them, so enigmatic and attractive.

Of course, at that time I didn't understand much of what was happening to me when I looked at them. I just let myself be carried away by the mysterious influence they emanate.

I knew that my mother was going to look at them closely and she would go inside them. She worked in a banking institution that provided loans to the peasant and cooperative sector, and sometimes she would arrive very late at night. She would tell us that she felt tired, because they would go in a Gaz-69 Jeep as far as they would allow her to go, but then she would have to continue on foot.

My sister @anixaeva and I would help around the house, simple things, for when she arrived, and between cabbage and cabbage, I'd stay awake thinking about those blue masses that for me today are still the same as they were in the old days, although, of course, with the passing of time they have changed their configuration.

Claro que en aquel momento no entendía mucho de lo que me ocurría al mirarlas. Solo me dejaba llevar por ese influjo misterioso que ellas emanan.

Sabía que mi madre iba a verlas de cerca y se internaba en ellas. Trabajaba en una institución bancaria que atendía los créditos al sector campesino y cooperativo, y llegaba a veces muy tarde, de noche. Nos decía que se sentía cansada, pues iban en un Jeep Gaz-69 hasta donde ellas le permitían rodar, pero luego tenía que seguir a pie.

Mi hermana @anixaeva y yo ayudábamos en la casa, cosas sencillas, para cuando ella llegara, y entre col y col, yo me quedaba lela pensando en esas masas azules que para mí hoy siguen siendo las mismas de antaño, aunque, por supuesto, con el paso del tiempo hayan cambiado su configuración.

Es que de lejos se ven igualitas.

This is the Cordillera de Guaniguanico and it is formed by the Sierra de los Órganos and the Sierra del Rosario.

Inland, the closest we have to Candelaria is the Community of Las Terrazas, a biosphere reserve, with an appetizing river, the San Juan, and other natural beauties, conducive to hiking and nature tourism, as well as Soroa, a world-famous destination, which also has a spectacular botanical garden, full of orchid varieties.

Allí adentro, lo más cerca de tenemos de aquí de Candelaria es la Comunidad de Las Terrazas, reserva de la biosfera, con un apetecible río, el San Juan, y otras bellezas naturales, propicias para el senderismo y el turismo de naturaleza, así como Soroa, un destino mundialmente conocido, que cuenta además con un espectacular jardín botánico, repleto de variedades de orquídeas.

Very modest little houses are starting to appear. I hate human storage boxes; I said so in a post. My parents live in one, but these little houses certainly look very flimsy, and have started to proliferate here in this settlement a few years ago.

Comienzan a aparecer casitas muy modestas. Odio las cajas que almacenan humanos; ya lo dije en algún post. Mis padres viven en una, pero ciertamente estas casitas se ven muy endebles, y desde hace unos años han comenzado a proliferar por acá en este asentamiento.

The blue mountains are deceptive. It doesn't look like I can see them any better up close.

Suddenly I found myself surrounded by kids selling mamoncillos. I wanted to buy from them, but I had gone out without money, in flip-flops, with my mobile phone as my only weapon to hunt ghosts.

De pronto me ví rodeada de niños que vendían mamoncillos. Quise comprarles, pero había salido sin dinero, en chancletas, con el móvil como única arma para cazar fantasmas.

I went back the way my footsteps had led me and found a story that made me laugh.

Regresé por el mismo camino por el que me condujeron mis pasos y encontré una historia que me hizo reír.

He's the local heartthrob and is used to visiting his fiancées and then, on his own, getting into his carriage to go home.

When I told my mother that the mountains were a bit elusive, she said it would be best if I went to Nena's house. From there I would have a much better view of the blue I was looking for. She phoned her and she gladly agreed to receive me.

Cuando le comenté a mi madre que las montañas estaban un poco huidizas, me dijo que lo mejor sería que fuera a casa de Nena. Pues desde allí tendría una visión muy mejorada de ese azul que yo tanto buscaba. La llamó por teléfono y ella gustosa accedió a recibirme.

I finally had my loving encounter with blue and I was happy.

Finalmente tuve mi amoroso encuentro con el azul y fui feliz.

Her husband invited me to come back early in the morning and assured me that at that hour the spectacle of the blue mountains is really wonderful.

I agreed, and was also promised a nice cup of coffee to garnish the expected morning view.

Whenever I see mountains my heart also flutters and I want to smell the air which surrounds the mountains. It's been long time that I have tried hiking. Hope so when I will go back my university then I will do hiking.
