La ciudad de Valencia y sus Torres
"In Aragon we prefer the sound of a river to the sound of a crowded beach".
With this premise I found myself in the terminal of the city where I live just when I was about to take the bus that would take me to a new destination, which indeed, included crowded beaches.
I couldn't say I prefer one or the other, I think the important thing is to find a way to enjoy wherever you are, but once in a while it doesn't hurt to leave that comfortable tranquility for a few days and explore the picturesque hustle and bustle outside my lovely shell.
So I ignored the banner and thought not of the refreshing rivers I was leaving behind but of how magnificent it would be to spend a few days by the sea.
“En Aragón preferimos el sonido de un río al de una playa llena de gente”.
Con esta premisa me encontré en el terminal de autobuses de la ciudad en donde vivo justo cuando iba a tomar el bus que me llevaría a un nuevo destino, que en efecto, incluía playas llenas de gente.
No podría decir que prefiero una cosa o la otra, creo que lo importante es encontrar la manera de disfrutar en cualquier lugar donde estés, pero de vez en cuando no viene mal dejar por unos días esa cómoda tranquilidad y explorar el pintoresco alboroto que hay fuera de mi encantadora burbuja.
Así que ignoré el anuncio y no pensé en lo refrescante de los ríos que dejaba atrás sino a lo magnifico que podría ser pasar unos días junto al mar.
I had an invitation from some time ago to go to know the city, my way, walking a lot, taking the time to enjoy the most beautiful corners and of course savoring the cuisine of the city, that was the first thing I did upon arrival in the city and it was a very pleasant experience that I relate in detail in the publication that is linked in the small image on the right.
My first day in the city was quite short, I had arrived early in the afternoon and I had to be present at an appropriate time at my hosts' house, so after lunch I took a short walk, as I was in the old town area I managed to see the Plaza del Ayuntamiento where there is a lot of traffic of people and activities, I couldn't take many nice pictures around the square because they were setting up some stages and installing signs that complicated things.
So I decided to walk far enough to get closer to the Puerto de Valencia and enjoy even if it was just for a moment the sea breeze and the views from the Marina de Valencia. I think it was an excellent idea although I had to walk for an hour under a scorching sun, even though there were options to get around by public transport or cab I love to walk and enjoy the streets of the city.
Contaba con una invitación hace tiempo para ir a conocer la ciudad, a mí manera, caminando mucho, tomándome el tiempo para disfrutar de los rincones más bonitos y por supuesto saboreando la gastronomía de la ciudad, esto fue lo primero que hice nada más llegar a la ciudad y fue una experiencia muy agradable que relato con detalle en la publicación que está enlazada en la pequeña imagen de arriba.
Mi primer día en la ciudad fue bastante corto, había llegado comenzada la tarde y tenía que hacerme presente a una hora apropiada en casa de mis anfitrionas, por lo que después de comer hice un paseo corto, como estaba en la zona del casco antiguo conocí la Plaza del Ayuntamiento en donde hay un gran tráfico de transeúntes y actividades, no pude hacer muchas fotos bonitas alrededor de la plaza porque estaban armando unos escenarios e instalando carteles que complicaban las cosas.
Entonces decidí caminar lo suficiente para acercarme al Puerto de Valencia y disfrutar aunque fuera solo un momento de la brisa del mar y las vistas desde la Marina de Valencia. Creo que fue una excelente idea aunque tuve que caminar una hora debajo de un sol abrasador, por supuesto que había opciones para movilizarse en transporte publico o taxi, pero a mí me encanta caminar e ir disfrutando de las calles de la ciudad.

So the tour itself began the next day, I decided to go for a walk very early to know the areas of La Seu and El carmen that for being very touristy are usually crowded throughout the day, so it was better to approach the most popular places very early, well the early in Spain of course, which is between 9 and 10 am, not at 7 am as in other places.
I think that if I had not had a map on my phone I would have gotten lost easily, not that it was a labyrinth but the streets of these areas were of those that are narrow and irregular that managed to confuse the sense of orientation. But this makes the tour interesting and keeps you entertained, it is a very crowded area but in which you feel safe.
My main objective was to visit the great towers of Valencia, which were two of the ancient gates to the city when it was walled and nowadays they are very well preserved, you can access them for a very small fee but for the time that lasted my visit had allowed free access to promote tourism in the city, in a regular situation the entrance would cost about 2.00 € and on weekends access would be free.
Así que el paseo propiamente dicho comenzó al día siguiente, decidí salir a caminar muy temprano para conocer las zonas de La Seu y El carmen que por ser muy turísticas suelen estar abarrotadas durante todo el día, así que era mejor acercarme a los lugares más populares desde muy temprano, bueno el temprano de España claro, que es entre las 9 y 10 de la mañana, no a las 7 am como en otros lugares.
Creo que si no hubiese contado con un mapa en el teléfono me hubiese perdido fácilmente, no es que fuera un laberinto pero las calles de estas zonas eran de esas que son estrechas e irregulares que lograban confundir el sentido de la orientación. Pero esto hace interesante el recorrido y te mantiene entretenido, es una zona muy concurrida pero en la que te sientes seguro.
Mi objetivo principal era conocer las grandes torres de Valencia, que eran dos de las antiguas puertas de entrada a la ciudad cuando esta estaba amurallada y actualmente las conservan muy bien, se puede acceder a ellas por un importe muy pequeño pero por el tiempo que duró mi visita había permitido el acceso gratuito para promover el turismo en la ciudad, en una situación regular la entrada costaría unos 2,00 € y los fines de semana el acceso sería gratuito.
The Serranos towers are the most famous and that's why I went to them first, the entrance was not very crowded when I arrived and on one side there was a reception where a tourist agent gave you an access ticket along with a small informative brochure after asking you where you came from to visit, I was quite amused to read the brochure and realize that in ancient times it was through this door that people coming from Zaragoza, where I currently live, accessed.
This door is described as "The triumphal gate" and it is from where we currently see on television that during the Fallas, the famous festivities of the city, the inauguration events are broadcast and the celebration begins in full swing.
Las torres de Serranos son las más famosas y por eso me acerqué a ellas primero, no estaba muy concurrida la entrada cuando llegué y en un lateral había una recepción en donde una agente de turismo te proporcionaba un ticket de acceso junto a un pequeño folleto informativo luego de preguntarte desde dónde venías a visitar, me hizo gracia leer el folleto y darme cuanta que en la antigüedad era por esta puerta por la que la gente que venía desde Zaragoza, en donde vivo actualmente, accedía.
Se describe esta puerta como “La entrada triunfal” y es desde donde vemos actualmente por la televisión que durante las Las fallas, las famosas fiestas de la ciudad, se transmiten los eventos de inauguración y se da inicio a la celebración por todo lo alto.

It is impressive to see how these ancient structures, which have gone through countless civil and natural attacks, stand upright and imposing, as well as the detail with which they are built, mainly functional but made with careful harmony. You are there trying to imagine what life must have been like for the guards who had to be there and you realize the contrast with today when looking through the large windows, it is a trip back in time.
I think what I liked the most when I went up were the gargoyles that I did not expect, I had no idea that the structure had these statues and it was interesting to see the monstrous forms at the top of the tower, here I show you a picture with one although it is quite far away, it is the proof of its existence!
Es impresionante ver cómo se mantienen erguidas e imponentes estas estructuras tan antiguas que han pasado por infinidad de ataques civiles y naturales, también lo es el detalle con el que están construidas, principalmente funcionales pero hechas con cuidadosa armonía. Estás ahí intentando imaginar cómo habrá sido la vida de los guardias que tuvieron que estar ahí y te das cuenta del contraste que hay con la actualidad al mirar por los ventanales, es un viaje en el tiempo.
Creo que lo que más me gustó encontrarme al subir fueron las gárgolas eso no me lo esperaba, no tenía idea que la estructura contaba con esas estatuas y fue interesante ver las formas monstruosas en lo más alto de la torre, aquí dejo una foto con una aunque se ve bastante lejos ¡es la muestra de su existencia!
After visiting Las torres de Serranos and walking almost a kilometer through the charming streets of El carmen one can reach my second destination, Las Torres de Quart.
These emerge at the bottom of the route and rise imposingly, the closer I got the more I was surprised by the size of these, I expected them to be equal to the previous ones but I saw them much higher and more intimate, I don't know if I'm right or if it's just the impression it gives depending on the location but I felt that I got more tired climbing the stairs, so they have to be bigger.
During the tour between the towers the influx of people in the streets began to be greater, Valencia is a very touristy city, the amount of foreign visitors is surprising, at least for me who was visiting for the first time and who came from the small and quiet city of Zaragoza which is not usually crowded except in rare situations.
Después de visitar Las torres de Serranos y caminando casi un kilómetro a través de las encantadoras calles de El carmen se llega a mi segundo destino, Las Torres de Quart.
Estas emergen al fondo del recorrido y se alzan imponentemente, mientras más me acercaba más me sorprendía el tamaño de estas, me esperaba que fueran iguales a las anteriores pero yo las vi mucho más altas e intimidades, no sé si tenga razón o si es solo la impresión que da según la ubicación pero yo sentí que me cansaba más subiendo las escaleras, así que tienen que ser más grandes.
Durante el recorrido entre las torres la afluencia de gente en las calles comenzó a ser mayor, Valencia es una ciudad muy turística, la cantidad de visitantes extranjeros es sorprendente, al menos para mí que la visitaba por primera vez y que venía de la pequeña y tranquila ciudad de Zaragoza que no suele estar abarrotada salvo en contadas situaciones.
According to the brochure, Las Torres de Quart were the main defense post of the city in the past and when you go up you realize that its location is really strategic. The structure is very similar to the previous one but this one has a couple of more interesting passages, like the spiral stairs that go up to the top, they are very steep and the truth is that I found them funny.
This time I paid more attention to the brochure and decided to include it here to illustrate a little more the historical information to which it is associated and to understand with more appropriate dimensions the different scenarios that can be visited.
Here I was able to take some pictures with the views of the city, you could see much better the silhouette of the whole city on the horizon, very European of course. I was also able to capture images of the waving flags, at the beginning of the day it was more complicated because there was not much wind blowing, in both towers the flags of the Valencian Community, the flag of Spain and the flag of the European Union are flying.
Según el folleto, Las Torres de Quart eran el principal puesto de defensa de la ciudad antaño y cuando subes te das cuenta que su ubicación es realmente estratégica. La estructura es muy parecida a la anterior pero esta tiene un par de pasajes más interesantes, como las escaleras en espiral que suben a lo más alto, son muy inclinadas y la verdad es que a mí me parecieron divertidas.
Esta vez le presté más atención al folleto y decidí incluirlo aquí para ilustrar un poco más la información histórica a la que está asociada y para entender con dimensiones más apropiadas los diferentes escenarios que pueden ser visitados.
Aquí pude hacer unas fotos con las vistas a la ciudad, se veía mucho mejor la silueta de toda la ciudad en el horizonte, muy europea por supuesto. También pude captar imágenes de las banderas ondeando, al principio del día fue mas complicado porque no soplaba mucho viento, en ambas torres ondean las banderas de la Comunidad Valenciana, la de España y la de la Unión Europea.

After visiting the towers it was time to take care of the food, past noon I already knew where to go to try typical things of the city, I had many on the list and I had to go covering them.
On my way to my destination I came across the bullring of Valencia and the Nord train station, the truth is that together they created a very nice postcard in the distance, it is a space with structures worthy of admiring for a while.
Luego de visitar las torres era momento de ocuparse de la comida, pasado el medio día ya sabía a dónde dirigirme para probar cosas típicas de la ciudad, tenía muchas en la lista y tenía que ir cubriéndolos.
En camino de mi destino me encontré con la Plaza de toros de Valencia y la estación de trenes Nord, la verdad es que juntos creaban una postal muy bonita en la distancia, es un espacio con estructuras dignas de admirar durante un rato.

The first stop I made was to get dessert, a very typical gastronomic custom of the area are the pumpkin fritters, these look like fried doughnuts but are much more consistent and with a texture and flavors more artisanal, typical of the land.
La primera parada que hice fue para obtener el postre, una muy típica costumbre gastronómica de la zona son los buñuelos de calabaza, estos parecen unos donuts fritos pero son mucho más consistentes y con una textura u sabores mas artesanales, propios de la tierra.

And the second was premeditated, while visiting the towers I called Paellas Velarte a place with more than 100 years making Paella for daily sale and events, they also hold the world record for the largest paella ever made.
It happens to me that these rice dishes so typical of the city are not usually made just for one diner and as this walk I was doing it on my own there was no point in going to order a paella in a restaurant to be told no, so I found this place where the locals order their portions to pick up at lunchtime while they work.
Also the prices were excessively cheap compared to the average food prices in the city, especially considering that the portions are quite large, most people order them to share.
Y la segunda fue premeditada, mientras visitaba las torres llamé a Paellas Velarte un local con más de 100 años haciendo Paella para la venta diaria y eventos, además tienen el record mundial de la paella más grande jamás hecha.
Me pasa que estos platos de arroz tan típicos de la ciudad no suelen hacerse solo para un comensal y como este paseo lo estaba haciendo por mi cuenta no tenía sentido ir a pedir una paella en un restaurante para que me dijeran que no, así que encontré este lugar en donde los lugareños encargan sus raciones para recoger a la hora de la comida mientras trabajan.
Además los precios eran excesivamente baratos en comparación a la media de precios de comida en la ciudad, sobretodo teniendo en cuenta que las raciones son bastante grandes, la mayoría de la gente las pide para compartir.

I decided to improvise a kind of picnic in Los Jardines del Turia, a huge park built in what was once the riverbed of the river that crosses the whole city. Also something that I really liked about Valencia is that everywhere there were trees full of Oranges, all of them beautiful and very provocative.
I also set out to get a wooden spoon to respect the tradition and live the whole experience, since it is said that Valencian paella is always eaten with a wooden spoon.
Decidí entonces improvisar una especie de picnic en Los Jardines del Turia, un enorme parque construido en lo que una vez fue el cauce del rio por lo que atraviesa toda la ciudad. Además algo que me gustó mucho de Valencia es que por todos lados había árboles cargados de Naranjas, bellas todas y muy provocativas.
Además me dispuse a conseguir una cucharilla de madera para respetar la tradición y vivir la experiencia completa, puesto que se dice que la paella Valenciana siempre se come con cuchara de madera.
Let's talk about the portions I bought at Paellas Velarte.
I ordered the indispensable ones, the Valencian paella and the baked rice, which incredibly is the most consumed option by the locals. They are two totally different preparations, you would expect the texture and mouthfeel to be similar but nothing could be further from the truth, they are different dishes and it makes no sense to compare them.
The Paella Valenciana is prepared on the stove with chicken, beans, garrofon beans and snails, it is priced at 3,90 € the half kilo portion, an option that for its quality/price ratio is more than good, full of flavor with enough ingredients in proportion to the rice and a very correct cooking point of the rice, loose and light.
The Baked rice has a different cooking as its name suggests, they prepare it with sausage, blood sausage, pork ribs, tomato, baked potatoes and whole garlic that I loved. In fact I liked everything in this rice, I had never tried it before and the taste is very different from paella, more concentrated as it has been baked and with a certain mellowness due to the fatty ingredients, one of those dishes that no one could doubt that it is always good. The cost is 4,00 € for a half kilo portion.
The only negative thing I could say about these preparations is that in both there was an excess of oil, but this was to be expected, it is a way to ensure that cooking in large quantities is easier to get a good result and baking the rice in individual trays with these ingredients is complicated not to generate that excess.
The truth is that for that price I expected much less quality and on the contrary I was very satisfied with the flavors and also quite full, it is a very good option to try a typical everyday dish without spending a lot of money.
Hablemos de las raciones que compré en Paellas Velarte.
Pedí los indispensables, la paella valenciana y el arroz al horno que increíblemente es la opción más consumida por los lugareños. Son dos preparaciones totalmente diferentes, se esperaría que la textura y sensaciones en boca fuera parecida pero nada más alejado de la realidad, son platos diferentes y no tiene sentido compararlos.
La Paella Valenciana la preparan al fogón con pollo, judías, garrofón y caracoles, tiene un precio de 3,90 € la ración de medio kilo, una opción que por su relación calidad/precio está más que bien, cargada de sabor con bastantes ingredientes en proporción con el arroz y un punto de cocción del arroz muy correcto, suelto y ligero.
El Arroz al horno lleva una cocción diferente como su nombre lo indica, lo preparan con longaniza, morcilla, costillas de cerdo, tomate, patatas panaderas y unos ajos enteros que a mí me encantaron. De hecho todo en este arroz me gustó, nunca lo había probado y el sabor es muy diferente a la paella, mas concentrado al haber sido horneado y con cierta melosidad por lo graso de los ingredientes, uno de esos platos que nadie podría dudar que esté siempre bueno. El costo es de 4,00 € por la ración de medio kilo.
Lo único negativo que podría decir de estas preparaciones es que en ambas había un exceso de aceite, pero esto era de esperarse, es una forma de garantizar que cocinando en grandes cantidades sea más fácil obtener un buen resultado y al hornear el arroz en bandejas individuales con esos ingredientes es complicado que no genere ese exceso.
Yo la verdad es que por ese precio esperaba mucha menos calidad y por lo contrario quedé muy satisfecha con los sabores y además bastante llena, es una opción muy acertada para probar un plato típico del día a día sin gastar mucho dinero.

Finally the pumpkin fritters, very sweet and crunchy on the outside, the texture of the inside was more dense than spongy but still nice, honestly I would have liked to have chocolate to eat them together but it was something that I did not value at the time of purchase.
Por ultimo los buñuelos de calabaza, muy dulces y crujientes por fuera, la textura del interior era más densa que esponjosa pero sin dejar de ser agradable, sinceramente me hubiese gustado tener chocolate para comerlos en conjunto pero fue algo que no valoré al momento de comprarlos.

I'm going to stop here this part of my adventures, I think it's always fun to finish with some good food to recharge and continue. For now what I have seen, known and tasted of the city of Valencia has pleased me a lot, I had expectations it is true but I always expect the worst, for foresight more than anything else and to avoid disappointment.
But for the moment the plans are developing very smoothly and the gastronomic tour is going well. I have pending a next tour a little more beachy because that's what I really came here to enjoy, change of scenery.
I say goodbye with these beautiful oranges that I keep admiring all over the city, they are beautiful and it is inevitable to take pictures of them every time I see them.
Voy a detener aquí esta parte de mis aventuras, creo que siempre es divertido terminar con algo de buena comida para poder recargar energías y continuar. Por ahora lo que he visto, conocido y probado de la ciudad de valencia me ha gustado mucho, tenía expectativas es cierto pero siempre espero lo peor, por previsión más que todo y evitar la desilusión.
Pero por los momentos los planes se desarrollan de manera muy fluida y el tour gastronómico va viento en popa. Tengo pendiente un próximo recorrido un poco más playero porque es lo que realmente he venido a disfrutar aquí, cambiar de aires.
Me despido con estas hermosas naranjas que no dejo de admirar por toda la ciudad, son preciosas y es inevitable ir haciendo fotos de ellas cada vez que las veo.

Jajajaja hola @sofathana de poder se puede, lo que pasa es que no las recomiendan para el condicho, de hecho la alcaldía manda a los jardineros a recogerlas para desechar porque son solo con fines ornamentales.
Son muy amargas y como absorben toda la contaminación de la ciudad pues probablemente tóxicas. Así que normalmente no ves a gente recogiéndolas para llevarlas a casa.
En Venezuela uno si puede agarrar los mangos y los aguacates jajajaja pero aquí al parecer enferman.
😯 Definitivamente las apariencias engañan jajaja, ¡tan apetitosas que se ven!
Cierto, aquí en Venezuela sólo es necesario que el mango, aguacate, etc, estén bajitos 😂

He estado varias veces en Valencia pero de turismo una sola. Lo que más me gustó de todo fue asistir al Tribunal de las Aguas. Se siente como si hubieras podido viajar en el tiempo.

Hombreeeeee, que si no habrá horchata jajajaja me declaro fan absoluta desde que la probé de verdad, no la del supermercado que había probado fuera de valencia.
Ah pues mira que interesante, una opinión fundada en la experiencia me interesa mucho 😌 yo cuando leo sobre lugares en los que he estado me pongo nostálgica, no puedo evitarlo jejeje
Pues yo coincidí en lo del Tribunal de las Aguas por casualidad pero me alejé rápidamente, estaba tan pero tan concurrido que me desesperaba, luego me dijeron que desaproveché la oportunidad pero en esas condiciones no iba a poder disfrutarlo, quizá haya sido por las fechas.
La horchata no me gusta, allí la cambié por leche merengada, que me chifla. Pero mi marido en cuanto hace un poco de calor la bebe por litros. En casa se tiene que consolar con la del supermercado y opina como tú, pero le sirve de consuelo.
Qué curioso eso de ponerte nostálgica. A mí solo me pasa si existe alguna vinculación emocional, según lo que haya vivido en esos lugares, o si me falta alguno de los que me acompañaron, pero por lo general no voy más allá de querer aprender otras perspectivas.
Sí, las fechas si fuiste hace poco estoy segura que influyeron. Cuando asistimos nosotros fue hace unos 15 años, que no había tantísimo turismo como ahora. Aquel día hacía mucho calor y también ayudó a que hubiese menos público. Seríamos unas 20-25 personas, una gozada. Aunque se entiende poco porque lo hablan todo en valenciano, jeje.

Reading your post I felt like I visited this place with you, it is a great guide for someone who wants to visit Spain and see its historical heritage. I agree that seeing those ancient architecture makes us the modern people to stun about the skills of those who erected such buildings and that they are still there. Luckily many such placed nowadays are preserved by different trusts and organizations. Beautiful trip and the food looks so delicious :)

Esta clase de post siempre es genial verlos porque yo veo difícil que algún día logre ir por esos lares, pero al menos con estas publicaciones y fotografías podemos ver otras partes del mundo que de otra manera no podriamos ver.
