Getting to Know New Transportation
A visit to the cable car, an iconic location in Caracas, where the colonial city was left behind and transformed into urban areas, where rural people and migrants lived side by side, seeking to settle, building their own ranches to begin a better life in the city. On this visit, for the first time, I'm getting an aerial view of the San Agustín neighborhood in South Caracas, a neighborhood that in the 1960s was known for its insecurity. And over time, it became a fundamental part of the city.

Conociendo Novedoso Transporte Una visita al metro cable, a un lugar icónico de Caracas, donde la ciudad colonial, quedó atrás y se fue transformando en zonas urbanas, donde las personas del campo y los migrantes convivieron juntos, buscando asentarse, construyendo sus ranchos para comenzar una mejor vida en la ciudad. En esta visita por primera vez estoy conociendo de manera aérea el barrio San Agustín del Sur de Caracas, un barrio que en los años sesenta era conocido por su fama de inseguridad. Y con el correr del tiempo pasó a ser una parte fundamental de la ciudad.
After the violence, the parish achieved its own transformation, seeking a change in society through the recovery of culture and community building. It was arduous work, but one that has now paid off; they have managed to reclaim themselves through their constant struggles. Now, the organized groups have struggled to access the necessary public services. One of their greatest needs was the lack of public transportation in the neighborhood, where ordinary people had to walk up and down to the top of the hill.
Después de la violencia, la parroquia logró su propia transformación, buscando un cambio en la sociedad, a través del rescate de la cultura y la formación de la comunidad. Un trabajo arduo, pero que hoy en día les ha dejado beneficio, han logrado reivindicarse con sus luchas constantes. Ahora los organizados han batallado para contar con los servicios públicos necesarios. Una de sus fuertes necesidades era el transporte público inexistente en el barrio, donde las personas de a pie tenían que bajar y subir caminando a la cima del cerro.
With the construction of the metro cable car, light arrived in the middle of their journey, improving their quality of life. This new public transport system was designed for neighborhoods that have significant vehicle access difficulties due to the uneven topography of some areas without roads.
Con la construcción del metro cable les llegó la luz en medio del camino, mejorando su calidad de vida. Este nuevo transporte público fue pensado para las barriadas que tienen mucha dificultad por el acceso de vehículos, debido a la topografía irregular de algunos sectores que no tienen caminos.
With this means of transportation, the first in our country, we managed to reduce travel time to destinations, improve transportation for people to get to work or any important errand on time, and also benefit people with disabilities and children who want to get to school—the entire population in general—by giving them free time. I was able to glean this from my experience with some users when I asked them what they thought of the innovative metro cable car. Something that struck me quite a bit: some metro cable car stations are just a few meters from some residents' homes. It's like leaving the station and arriving at your front door.
Con este medio de transporte, el primero en nuestro país, se logró disminuir el tiempo de traslado a su destino, mejoro el traslado a las personas a llegar, a tiempo al trabajo o a cualquier diligencia de importancia, también beneficio a las personas con discapacidad y a los niños para ir a la escuela, en general a toda la población, les regalo también, tiempo libre. Esto lo pude recoger de la experiencia que tuve con algunos usuarios, cuando les pregunté, qué les parecía el novedoso metro cable. Algo que me impactó bastante: es que algunas estaciones del metro cable quedan justamente a poco metro de la casa de algunos habitantes. Algo así como salir de la estación y llegar a la puerta de tu casa.
I was impressed by the infrastructure, the facilities, the cable car system, and the security that prevails at the stations and in the neighborhood. I was able to visit two stations and ride the funiculars, where you can get a complete view of the neighborhood and part of the city of Caracas. I was very moved and emotional at the same time because, despite seeing so many neighborhoods, you can see the faces of the people who get up every day to provide for their families. They are always struggling to meet their needs, but they come out with a smile; hopeful, seeking a better world and eager to overcome adversity and continue fighting to transform their environment, rescue the culture left behind by their ancestors, continue organizing, and prepare for a better life.
Quedé impresionado con la infraestructura, las instalaciones, un sistema de tracción por cable y la seguridad que reina en las estaciones y en el barrio. Pude conocer dos estaciones, me trasladé en los funiculares donde puedes tener un panorama completo del barrio, y parte de la ciudad de Caracas, muy emocionado y emotivo a la vez porque, a pesar de ver tantos barrios. Puedes ver el rostro de la gente, que se levanta cada día para buscar el sustento a su familia, siempre están batallando por sus necesidades, pero salen con una sonrisa; esperanzados, buscando un mundo mejor y con ganas de vencer las adversidades y seguir luchando para transformar su medio ambiente, rescatar su cultura dejada por sus ancestros, seguir organizándose, preparándose para vivir mejor.
I, who don't belong to the neighborhood, when I rode the funicular, I felt like I was visiting a new destination. I felt excited; it was something different for me. The people were very kind and affectionate. They realized you didn't belong there, and they began to tell their stories and tales of what they'd experienced in the community. It was a very beautiful experience.
Yo, que no pertenezco al barrio, al montarme al funicular, sentí que era una visita a un destino nuevo, me sentí emocionado, era algo diferente para mí, la gente muy amable, y cariñosa, se dan cuenta de que no perteneces al lugar, comienzan sus relatos e historias vividas en la comunidad, fue una experiencia muy bonita.
I was able to enjoy the striking view. You can identify each of the sectors that make up the greater Caracas area and see its transformation, the contrast of modern buildings blending with different construction styles. Taking the funicular, as you advance suspended in the air, it's like watching a movie in a sequence of images. The ride is short; only two stations were open at that time, where you can get off and explore part of the area and interact with its residents. There are spectacular viewpoints where you can see the entire city.
Pude disfrutar de la vista muy impactante, se puede identificar cada uno de los sectores que conforman la gran Caracas y ver su transformación, el contraste de edificaciones modernas que se mezclan con distintos estilos de construcción, yendo en el funicular, a medida que avanzas suspendido en el aire, pareciera que vas viendo como una película, en secuencia de imágenes. El recorrido es corto, solo estaban habilitadas dos estaciones para ese momento, donde puedes bajarte y explorar parte del sector, e interactuar con sus pobladores. Tienes espectaculares miradores donde puedes ver toda la ciudad.
To explore the cable car, you can get there by public or private transportation, going to Parque Central, or by taking the Caracas Metro.
Para conocer el metro cable, puedes llegar en transporte público o privado, hasta el Parque Central, o desplazándote en el Metro de Caracas.
