Dear friends,

Today, I want to share with you a place I recently discovered, but I had known about it for some time—a true hidden gem in Tuscany: Casale Marittimo. Although I have talked about many Tuscan villages in my previous publications, it seems that this charming village had escaped my attention until now. Therefore, in this post, I want to share some of the photos I took during my visit, and I even checked on the Pinmapple map, but it seems like no one has been there, which is a real shame.

Casale Marittimo is a small municipality located in the province of Pisa, about 80 km from Florence and 50 km from Pisa. Its beauty lies in the fact that it is perched on a hill overlooking the valley of the Cecina River, offering a breathtaking panorama that stretches almost to the sea. An interesting feature of this place is its proximity to the sea, which is reachable in just a few kilometers, so you can relax here and then enjoy the seaside.

The historic center of Casale Marittimo is incredibly picturesque, with its cobbled streets and ancient houses—a true homage to the traditions of Tuscan villages that I have shared several times here on the blog. What I discovered during my visit is the presence of numerous archaeological finds in the vicinity of this charming village, and this is not widely publicized.

To reach Casale Marittimo, you can take the A12 highway and exit at Cecina centro; from there, the village is easily accessible in just a few kilometers. Unlike some villages that can be challenging to reach due to rough roads, here, the journey is smooth and convenient, which is quite a plus.

But what truly makes this village fascinating, and what can you do during a visit?

During my stroll, I noticed some must-see attractions. First and foremost, the Church of Madonna delle Grazie, dating back to the 18th century, with its simple yet evocative facade. However, it's important to note that access is limited to specific hours, which is a real shame; I never quite understand why places of worship are often closed.

I highly recommend exploring the well-preserved architecture of the village by wandering through its narrow streets, something I always do. In the heart of the village, you'll also find a cozy bar on the main square, where there were quite a few people, where you can enjoy a coffee or a delightful aperitif. During my stroll, I was captivated by the unique character of the staircases in each house, and I discovered a tavern where you can have lunch and savor Tuscan cuisine.

Continuing my exploration, I came across a bust of Jacopo Cancellieri, probably a prominent figure from this area, or perhaps someone born here, who fought during the Italian Risorgimento war in 1896 and was commemorated for their military valor. Along my path, I was impressed by the underground passages beneath the houses, with well-crafted architectural details, and I even found a small library available to those who want to read a good book, something I had never seen in any other village.

Finally, one of the most memorable experiences in Casale Marittimo is admiring the magnificent panorama that unfolds from this charming village. The view of the Cecina River valley and the sea is simply breathtaking and adds a romantic touch to this place. If you're looking for an authentic destination in Tuscany, Casale Marittimo is definitely worth considering. You won't regret it! 😁
