El senderismo y subir cerros es una de las cosas que más me gusta hacer en la naturaleza, es algo adictivo. Muchas veces el esfuerzo es grande pero la adrenalina y la paz que se experimentan en esos paisajes lo valen, por eso cuando se presenta la ocasión acudo feliz al llamado de la montaña.
This time I'm going to tell you about an excursion I did in Mérida state and that took me to the border with the state of Barinas, a demanding route through the Venezuelan Andes, in the west of the country, which of course also included a lot of cold.
Esta vez les voy a contar de una excursión que hice en el estado Mérida y que me llevó a la frontera con el estado Barinas, una exigente ruta por los andes venezolanos, en el occidente del país, que por supuesto también incluyó mucho frío.
We were about 30 people in the group, the organization of this route was in charge of the Caracas Excursionist Center (CEC), with whom I have visited incredible places.

We left by bus from the east of Caracas after 6:00 in the afternoon on a Friday, about an hour later, through Aragua state, we made a stop to pick up my sister who was waiting for us at the toll booth, it was the first time that she was going to Merida and also to an excursion of this type, camping in the mountains, so she was excited.
Salimos en autobús desde el este de Caracas pasadas las 6:00 de la tarde de un viernes, como una hora después, por el estado Aragua, hicimos una parada para recoger a mi hermana que nos esperaba en el peaje, era la primera vez que ella iba a Mérida y también a una excursión de este tipo, con acampada en la montaña, así que estaba emocionada.
It was already night, so most of the people were asleep on the bus or trying to sleep ... the music that the driver had put on was at full volume and it wasn't very pleasant hahaha, the air conditioning was also freezing us a bit, maybe to acclimate to the cold to come, I thought. Despite this, the trip passed quietly and at dawn we reached Mérida state.
Ya era de noche, por lo que la mayoría de la gente iba dormida en el autobús o trataba de dormir… la música que había puesto el chofer estaba a full volumen y no era muy agradable jajaja, también el aire acondicionado nos estaba congelando un poco, quizá para aclimatarnos para el frío que vendría, pensé. A pesar de esto el viaje transcurrió tranquilo y ya al amanecer llegamos al estado Mérida.
The day was sunny, with a very blue sky, in that background the landscape with houses between the mountains looked beautiful. Then we go through the National Astronomical Observatory of Llano del Hato, also known as Astrophysicist of Mérida, at 3,600 meters high, it must be a spectacle to observe the universe from there.
El día estaba soleado, con un cielo muy azul, en ese fondo el paisaje con casitas entre las montañas se veía precioso. Luego pasamos por el Observatorio Astronómico Nacional de Llano del Hato, también conocido como Astrofísico de Mérida, está a 3.600 metros de altura, debe ser un espectáculo observar el universo desde allí.
We continued rolling until we reached the town of Mucuchíes, where the bus dropped us off and we took some Toyotas that in about 20 minutes took us to Gavidia through a narrow dirt road.
Seguimos rodando hasta llegar al pueblo de Mucuchíes, allí nos dejó el autobús y tomamos unos Toyotas que en unos 20 minutos nos trasladaron hasta Gavidia por una estrecha vía de tierra.
Located in the Sierra Nevada of Mérida state, where the highest peak in Venezuela is located (Bolívar Peak, 4,980 meters), Gavidia is a small town where people live mostly from agriculture and livestock. This was the starting point of our excursion, we got our backpacks off the Toyotas and waited for the mules that most of the people in the group had hired to carry their backpacks. My sister and I decided to use our backs.
Situada en la Sierra Nevada del estado Mérida, donde se encuentra la cima más alta de Venezuela (Pico Bolívar, 4.980 metros), Gavidia es una población pequeña donde la gente vive en su mayoría de la agricultura y la ganadería. Este fue el punto de inicio de nuestra excursión, bajamos nuestras mochilas de los Toyotas y esperamos que llegaran las mulas que la mayoría de las personas del grupo habían contratado para que cargaran sus mochilas. Mi hermana y yo decidimos usar nuestras espaldas.
The start of the hike is steep and with the weight we were carrying we were going at a slow pace, only stopping a few times to take photos.
El inicio de la caminata es empinado y con el peso que cargábamos íbamos a ritmo lento, sólo deteniéndonos algunas veces para tomar fotos.
The frailejones (espeletia), a characteristic plant of the Andes of Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador, were appearing more and more on the way. I really like its velvety appearance, in addition, taking the infusion of its leaves is great to relieve the flu, cough, among other conditions.

After almost two hours we reached a flat area, which we took advantage of to rest a little, hydrate ourselves and eat something. At this point my sister was complaining about the weight of her backpack, she was having a hard time moving forward. I said let me see, and really when I put her backpack on it was super heavy! I think she brought too much food hahaha, as it was the first time she came to camp she didn't realize how many things she had put there.
Luego de casi dos horas llegamos a una parte plana, la cual aprovechamos para descansar un poco, hidratarnos y comer algo. En este punto mi hermana se quejaba del peso que tenía su mochila, le estaba costando mucho avanzar. Le dije: déjame ver, y de verdad cuando la cargué ¡estaba súper pesada! Creo que llevó demasiada comida jajaja, como era la primera vez que venía a acampar no se dio cuenta de las muchas cosas que había metido allí.
A companion from the group who saw her making a lot of effort to move forward, offered to help her during a stretch carrying her backpack, she was weightless because she had hired a mule to transport her things. As you can see, solidarity is always present on excursions.
Una compañera del grupo que la vio haciendo mucho esfuerzo para avanzar, se ofreció a ayudarla durante un tramo cargando su mochila, ella iba sin peso porque había contratado mula para el traslado de sus cosas. Como ven, la solidaridad siempre está presente en las excursiones.
We continue along the path and pass a small lagoon surrounded by mist. Although it was cold we only felt it when we stopped, the constant ascent kept our bodies warm.
Continuamos por el sendero y pasamos al lado de una pequeña laguna rodeada de neblina. Aunque hacía frío sólo lo sentíamos cuando parábamos, el ascenso constante mantenía nuestros cuerpos calientes.
There was little left to reach the first part of our goal for the day: Alto de Santo Cristo, at 4,200 meters high. The stretch to get there is quite steep and it was also drizzling, my breathing was very agitated, at this point you feel your heartbeat pounding in your ears. Slowly but surely I kept walking and almost an hour later I arrived, my sister also succeeded.
Faltaba poco para alcanzar la primera parte de nuestra meta del día: el Alto de Santo Cristo, a 4.200 metros de altura. El tramo para llegar allí es bastante empinado y además lloviznaba, mi respiración estaba muy agitada, a estas alturas sientes cómo los latidos del corazón golpean en tus oídos. Sin prisa pero sin pausa seguí caminando y casi una hora después llegué, mi hermana también lo logró.
In total, from Gavidia to Alto de Santo Cristo it took us about four and a half hours. Now we had to continue to our camping place, the Ramillón Lagoon (3,800 meters), fortunately most of this trail is downhill, with some slight climbs and a somewhat complicated passage through some large rocks, but everything went well.
En total, desde Gavidia hasta el Alto de Santo Cristo nos tardamos más o menos cuatro horas y media. Ahora teníamos que seguir hasta nuestro lugar de acampada, la Laguna Ramillón (3.800 metros), afortunadamente la mayor parte de este sendero es en descenso, con algunas leves subidas y un paso algo complicado por unas grandes rocas, pero todo salió bien.
It was almost 5:00 in the afternoon and we had to hurry to get to the campsite before nightfall. It was cloudy and in general the atmosphere was perceived as mysterious, I was in those thoughts when suddenly some dogs appeared on the road, hahaha, I was a little scared but I passed by them quietly, where did they come from? Then I saw that they came with the people who were guiding the mules.
Ya eran casi las 5:00 de la tarde y debíamos apurarnos para llegar antes del anochecer al lugar de la acampada. Estaba nublado y en general el ambiente se percibía como misterioso, en esos pensamientos estaba cuando de repente aparecieron unos perros en el camino, jajaja, me dio un poco de miedo pero pasé a su lado tranquilamente, ¿de dónde habrán salido? Luego vi que venían con las personas que guiaban a las mulas.
The drizzle returned and further ahead we observed a spectacular, albeit cloudy, view of the Santo Cristo Lagoon, located at 3,900 meters. Of glacial origin, it is the largest mountain lagoon in Venezuela.

Finally, shortly after 6:00 p.m. we arrived at the Ramillon Lagoon, just in time to set up our tents before nightfall.

The cold was powerful, so we had dinner, looked for water to drink and went into our tents to rest. My sister was colder than I was that night because she had no thermal insulation, she had brought a blanket to put over the sleeping bag, but it was not very useful... The next day dawned with sunshine and we were all happy to expose ourselves to its warmth.
El frío estaba potente, de manera que cenamos, buscamos agua para beber y nos metimos en nuestras carpas a descansar. This day we went to conquer the summit of El Llano peak, at 4,240 meters above sea level. It is the highest in the state of Barinas, so not only did we summit, we also reached the border between Mérida and Barinas.
Este día fuimos a conquistar la cima del pico El Llano, a 4.240 metros de altura. Es el más alto del estado Barinas, así que no sólo hicimos cumbre, también llegamos a la frontera entre Mérida y Barinas.
We left the camp at about 7:30 in the morning and began the climb up a mountain that is in front of the Ramillón Lagoon.

The surface there is quite rocky so we had to walk carefully. We were all warmly dressed but by the time we took our first break many of us were already taking off our clothes because the sun was burning.
Por allí la superficie es bastante rocosa así que había que caminar con cuidado. Todos fuimos bien abrigados pero cuando hicimos la primera pausa muchos ya estábamos quitándonos la ropa porque el sol quemaba.
As we continued climbing we could see other lagoons on the other side, these remote places in the Venezuelan Andes have unique landscapes, impossible not to stop and contemplate.
Al continuar subiendo pudimos ver otras lagunas del otro lado, estos lugares remotos de los andes venezolanos tienen unos paisajes únicos, imposible no detenerse a contemplar.
The last part before reaching the top of the peak El Llano is completely rocky, being at its base we follow the indications of our guide Adriana to climb more safely.
La última parte antes de llegar a la cima del pico El Llano es completamente rocosa, estando en su base seguimos las indicaciones de nuestra guía Adriana para subir de forma más segura.
At the top we find beautiful panoramic views of these little-known and little-visited mountains.

Although the return is the same way as the way out, the view is always different, that's how I see it, because when you go up you are watching one landscape and when you return, another. As there were loose stones along the way, we made the descent carefully.

When we arrived at the camp at the Ramillón Lagoon it was a little after 2:00 in the afternoon, so after lunch we took advantage of the time to get to know the surroundings, I noticed that depending on the time of day the water of the lagoon changed color between green and blue tones.
Cuando llegamos al campamento en la Laguna Ramillón eran poco más de las 2:00 de la tarde, así que después de almorzar aprovechamos el tiempo para conocer los alrededores, me fijé que según la hora del día el agua de la laguna cambiaba de color entre tonos verdes y azules.
When the sun went down and the cold was taking over the place after 6:00 pm, we took shelter in the tent to eat again and warm up the body with calories hahaha. At dusk we played cards with some of the group and drank hot chocolate that they gave us, while my sister asked them if they had heard strange footsteps the night before. I didn't hear anything but it turns out that the others did... could it have been the guardian elves of the mountains?
Cuando cayó el sol y el frío se fue apoderando del lugar después de las 6:00 de la tarde, nos resguardamos en la carpa a comer de nuevo y así calentar un poco el cuerpo con las calorías jajaja. Ya al anochecer jugamos cartas con algunos compañeros del grupo y tomamos chocolate caliente que nos brindaron, mientras, mi hermana les preguntaba si habían escuchado unos extraños pasos la noche anterior. Yo no escuché nada pero resulta que los demás sí… ¿habrán sido los duendes guardianes de las montañas?
The next day it was our turn to go back, so we got up early to have breakfast and pick up our tents. We left before 8:00 in the morning, on the way my sister collected many frailejones leaves to take them home, as I told you before, this plant is very good to cure flu congestion.
Al día siguiente nos tocaba regresar, así que nos levantamos temprano para desayunar y recoger nuestras carpas. Salimos antes de las 8:00 de la mañana, por el camino mi hermana recogió muchas hojas de frailejones para llevarlos a casa, como les dije antes, esta planta es muy buena para curar la congestión gripal.
Our backpacks were now lighter, especially my sister's, she tried to eat everything she had carried to lighten her load hahaha.
Nuestras mochilas iban ahora más ligeras, sobre todo la de mi hermana, ella trató de comerse todo lo que había llevado para aligerar su carga jajaja.
The weather was cloudy but fortunately it didn't rain, the route was pleasant and the return to Gavidia, almost all downhill, took us about three hours. There we took again some Toyotas that took us to Mucuchíes, where we went for a walk to get to know the place a little and to eat something, and at about 5:00 in the afternoon our bus arrived to go to Caracas.
El clima estaba nublado pero afortunadamente no llovió, el recorrido estuvo agradable y el regreso hasta Gavidia, casi todo en bajada, nos tomó unas tres horas. Allí tomamos nuevamente unos Toyotas que nos llevaron a Mucuchíes, donde dimos un paseo para conocer un poco el lugar y para comer algo, y como a las 5:00 de la tarde llegó nuestro autobús para irnos a Caracas.
Thus ended this trip, which as always happens when I go on an excursion of this type, not only leaves me with the adventure lived but also the wonderful energy that the mountains inject you with.
Así terminó este viaje, que como siempre ocurre cuando voy a una excursión de este tipo, no sólo me deja la aventura vivida sino también la maravillosa energía que te inyectan las montañas.
