Cada país tiene uno o varios lugares emblemáticos que muchos locales ansían conocer en algún momento de sus vidas, para los venezolanos uno de ellos es sin duda alguna La Gran Sabana, que forma parte del Parque Nacional Canaima en el estado Bolívar, es algo así como EL VIAJE, un destino estelar, basta con ver algunas fotos o videos para entenderlo y también sentir unas frenéticas ganas de ir.
I had already been in this part of southern Venezuela visiting my uncle in Ciudad Bolívar and getting to know Puerto Ordaz and some time later I returned to do the excursion to the tepui (mount) Roraima, one of the best experiences of my life (post here), however, I still had to do the typical journey through La Gran Sabana, in which you travel by car and get to know some of the hundreds of waterfalls and extraordinary landscapes that it has. That's why when I saw the opportunity to do it, with a guide I had traveled with before, I didn't think much about it and I told my sister to join the adventure, a week of Jeep Tour through La Gran Sabana, of which I will speak in several posts to show in more detail all the amazing places we visited. Let's get started!
Ya había estado en esta parte del sur de Venezuela visitando a mi tío en Ciudad Bolívar y conociendo Puerto Ordaz y tiempo después volví para hacer la excursión al tepui (cerro) Roraima, una de las mejores experiencias de mi vida (post aquí), sin embargo me faltaba hacer la travesía típica por La Gran Sabana, en la que la recorres en auto y conoces algunos de los cientos de cascadas y paisajes extraordinarios que tiene. Por eso cuando vi la oportunidad de hacerla, con un guía con el que había viajado antes, no lo pensé mucho y le dije a mi hermana que se uniera a la aventura, una semana de Jeep Tour por La Gran Sabana, de la cual les hablaré en varias entregas para mostrar con más detalle todos los increíbles lugares que visitamos. ¡Comencemos!
From Caracas to Bolívar state / De Caracas al estado Bolívar
The departure was scheduled on a Saturday at 7:00 am and the meeting point was the parking lot of the Generalissimo Francisco de Miranda Park or Parque del Este (East Park), one of the most popular recreational sites in Caracas. There, José “Capino” Díaz, the guide, was waiting for us, with two Toyota long chassis and a pickup truck. In these vehicles we distributed about 25 people, we put our backpacks and tents on the roof where they tied them up and placed a waterproof canvas on top and we left for take with us a small bag with the basics (water, food, snacks, money, documents, etc). As he had warned us that the trip in these Toyotas was not exactly comfortable, Capino advised us to have the sleeping bags at hand to use them in the seats and so it would be a less annoying journey for our butts hahaha... the distance is very long, from Caracas to Guasipati, where we were going to spend the first night, is 827 km.
La salida estaba programada un sábado a las 7:00 am y el punto de encuentro era el estacionamiento del Parque Generalísimo Francisco de Miranda o Parque del Este, uno de los sitios de esparcimiento más populares de Caracas. Allí nos esperaba José “Capino” Díaz, el guía, con dos Toyota chasis largo y una camioneta, en estos vehículos nos distribuimos unas 25 personas, pusimos nuestros bolsos y carpas en el techo donde los amarraron y colocaron encima una lona impermeable y dejamos para llevar con nosotros un bolso pequeño con lo básico (agua, comida, snacks, dinero, documentos, etc). Como nos había advertido que el viaje en estos Toyotas no era precisamente cómodo, Capino nos aconsejó tener los sacos de dormir a mano para usarlos en los asientos y así fuera un trayecto menos molesto para nuestras nalgas jajaja… la distancia es muy larga, de Caracas a Guasipati, donde íbamos a pasar la primera noche, son 827 km.
In the vehicle, my sister and I were with 8 more people, we were 4 on each side in the back and two who were sitting in the front next to the driver, those positions in front took turns from time to time so that we could all go for a while there something more comfortable and also put music of our preference (in our case, rock!).
En el vehículo mi hermana y yo íbamos con 8 personas más, éramos 4 de cada lado en la parte de atrás y dos que iban sentadas adelante junto al conductor, esos puestos de adelante se turnaban de vez en cuando para que todos pudiéramos ir un rato allí algo más cómodos y también poner música de nuestra preferencia (en nuestro caso, ¡rock!).
The route we took from Caracas took us to the east of the country, we passed through Barcelona, El Tigre and the distributor La Viuda, in Anzoátegui state. From there we continue south reaching the city of Puerto Ordaz, already in Bolívar state, where we cross the spectacular Orinoquia bridge.
La ruta que emprendimos desde Caracas nos llevó al oriente del país, pasamos por Barcelona, El Tigre y el distribuidor La Viuda, en el estado Anzoátegui. De allí seguimos al sur llegando a la ciudad de Puerto Ordaz, ya en el estado Bolívar, donde cruzamos el espectacular puente Orinoquia.
Of course, we made several stops along the way to go to the bathroom and stretch our legs and after passing through Upata, around nine at night we arrived at the town of Guasipati, at a house that the guide had arranged where we slept in a large patio using our insulation and sleeping bags and with access to a bathroom. Tiredness from so many miles made me sleep relatively well that night.
Claro que hicimos varias paradas en la vía para ir al baño y estirar las piernas y luego de pasar por Upata, como a las nueve de la noche llegamos a la población de Guasipati, a una casa que el guía había dispuesto donde dormimos en un gran patio usando nuestros aislantes y sacos de dormir y con acceso a un baño. El cansancio de tantos kilómetros me hizo dormir relativamente bien esa noche.
We woke up very early the next morning to go buy breakfast somewhere in Guasipati and continue the journey to our destination.
Nos despertamos muy temprano a la mañana siguiente para ir a comprar desayuno en algún lugar de Guasipati y continuar el viaje hasta nuestro destino.
Road to La Gran Sabana / Camino a La Gran Sabana
But why is La Gran Sabana so special? For many reasons, one of them is that it's part of the so-called Guiana Shield, which is estimated to be the oldest place on the planet, between 1,600 and 2,000 million years old.
Pero ¿por qué La Gran Sabana es tan especial? Por muchas razones, una de ellas es que forma parte del llamado Escudo Guayanés, que se calcula es el lugar más antiguo del planeta, entre 1.600 y 2.000 millones de años de edad.
In 1962 the Canaima National Park was created to protect this area, which has 3 million hectares, and La Gran Sabana located in its eastern part, has an area of 18 thousand km2. At first glance, what stands out the most are the endless plains and the incredible tepuis (flat mountains) that rise there, but when entering it along the Troncal 10 highway, you find so much pure and majestic nature between steep rocks, rivers, waterfalls and forests, that you feel witnessing the origin of the world. In 1994, Unesco included Canaima in the list of World Heritage Sites.
En el año 1962 fue creado el Parque Nacional Canaima para proteger esta zona, la cual tiene 3 millones de hectáreas, y La Gran Sabana ubicada en su parte oriental, tiene un área de 18 mil Km2. A simple vista lo que más destaca son las interminables planicies y los increíbles tepuyes (montañas amesetadas) que ahí se alzan, pero al adentrarse en ella a lo largo de la carretera Troncal 10, te consigues con tanta naturaleza pura y majestuosa entre abruptas rocas, ríos, cascadas y bosques, que te sientes presenciando el origen del mundo. En 1994 la Unesco incluyó a Canaima en la lista de Patrimonios de la Humanidad.
Returning to our route, Bolívar state is the largest in Venezuela, with an area of 242,801 km2, so the distances from one point to another are usually long. From Guasipati we continued to El Callao, Tumeremo, El Dorado and Las Claritas, until there it was little more than 200 km, these populations live mainly from gold mining, a lot of money moves there. A few minutes later we go through Km 88 and from there we enter what is known as the Serranía de Lema, on both sides of the road you can see a thick and green forest. In this section of the trip we rotated and my sister and I had our turn to go to the seats next to the driver and have a better view of the landscape.
Volviendo a nuestra ruta, el estado Bolívar es el más grande de Venezuela, con una superficie de 242.801 km2, así que las distancias de un punto a otro suelen ser largas. De Guasipati continuamos a El Callao, Tumeremo, El Dorado y Las Claritas, hasta ahí fueron poco más de 200 Km, estas poblaciones viven de la minería de oro principalmente, se mueve mucho dinero allí. Unos minutos después pasamos por el Km 88 y a partir de ahí entramos en lo que se conoce como la serranía de Lema, a ambos lados de la carretera se ve un espeso y verde bosque. En este tramo del viaje nos rotamos de asiento y a mi hermana y a mí nos tocó ir adelante con el conductor y una mejor vista del paisaje.
We made our first tourist stop a while later, at Km 98 of the Troncal 10 highway that crosses La Gran Sabana from north to south, since there is a place called The Stone of the Virgin, an impressive rock of Precambrian origin.
Nuestra primera parada turística la hicimos un rato después, en el Km 98 de la carretera Troncal 10 que atraviesa La Gran Sabana de norte a sur, ya que allí está un lugar llamado La Piedra de la Virgen, una impresionante roca de origen precámbrico.
It's not clear why they gave it that name, for some it is called like that because in profile it looks like an image of the Virgin and others say that its name is due to the fact that during the construction of the road to La Gran Sabana (1954-1973) they wanted dynamite this huge stone and attempts failed, it remained intact, virgin.
No está claro por qué le pusieron ese nombre, para algunos se llama así porque de perfil parece una imagen de la Virgen y otros afirman que su nombre se debe a que durante la construcción de la carretera a La Gran Sabana (1954-1973) se quiso dinamitar esta enorme piedra y los intentos fracasaron, quedó intacta, virgen.
This is a place of relaxation, when we passed by there were people grilling and resting in the cool of the shade. There is also a religious figure placed on the rock, a kind of altar.
Este es un lugar de esparcimiento, cuando pasamos por ahí había gente haciendo parrilla y descansando en la frescura de la sombra. También hay una figura religiosa colocada en la roca, una especie de altar.
We returned to the Toyotas and continued the trip, we weren't going as fast but suddenly a branch hit the windshield of the car and the glass cracked... the driver was distressed because it was his first trip with Capino (the guide) and that it was broken a glass was not a good way to start this work experience, but there was no problem, it was clearly an accident, he put plastic tape on it so that the pieces didn't come off and everything was fine.
Regresamos a los Toyotas y continuamos el viaje, no íbamos a tanta velocidad pero de repente una rama golpeó el parabrisas del carro y el vidrio se rajó… el conductor se angustió porque era su primer viaje con Capino (el guía) y que se le rompiera un vidrio no era una buena manera de comenzar esta experiencia laboral, pero no hubo problema, claramente fue un accidente, le puso cinta plástica para que no se desprendieran los pedazos y todo bien.
We arrived at Luepa, where there is a military checkpoint and the landscape around us had changed, there was no lush vegetation on the sides, now we were in the middle of the savannah.
Llegamos a Luepa, donde hay un puesto de control militar y ya el paisaje a nuestro alrededor había cambiado, no había frondosa vegetación a los lados, ahora sí estábamos en plena sabana.
At approximately two in the afternoon we made the second tourist stop of the day to see the Kamoirán Rapids, a place in the forest where there are small waterfalls, people can bathe, there are food sales and also an inn.
Aproximadamente a las dos de la tarde hicimos la segunda parada turística del día para conocer los Rápidos de Kamoirán, un lugar entre el bosque donde hay pequeños saltos de agua, la gente se puede bañar, hay venta de comidas y también una posada.
While the guide waited to refill gasoline, something that sometimes takes hours because there is no other station for kilometers, the whole group went to enjoy this landscape, a little appetizer of what was to come during the next six days.
Mientras el guía esperaba para recargar gasolina, algo que a veces lleva horas porque no hay otra estación en kilómetros, todo el grupo nos fuimos a disfrutar de este paisaje, un pequeño abrebocas de lo que se venía durante los seis días siguientes.
We stayed there for a couple of hours and continued the trip, on the way we could see several tepuis in the distance, spectacular views.
Estuvimos un par de horas allí y continuamos el viaje, en el camino pudimos ver a lo lejos varios tepuyes, unas vistas espectaculares.
At around six in the afternoon we arrived at the Caliope Wari camp, a beautiful natural space where we spent our first night in these ancestral and mystical lands. Here there are cabins to stay and for those who choose to sleep in tents like us, there are toilets and showers. The guide gave each group a gas stove and we prepared our dinner before going to rest.
Como a las seis de la tarde llegamos al campamento Caliope Wari, un hermoso espacio natural donde pasamos nuestra primera noche en estas tierras ancestrales y místicas. Aquí hay cabañas para alojarse y para los que optan por dormir en carpas como nosotros, hay baños y duchas. El guía nos dio a cada grupo unas cocinas a gas y preparamos nuestra cena para luego irnos a descansar.
