On the road to Choroní - Venezuela / Camino a Choroní - Venezuela

The second weekend of last month, September, I went to the beach with my friend Carol, we had planned this trip some time ago and finally we met at the terminal of Maracay (Aragua-Venezuela) that Friday morning to go to Choroní. I've been to this coastal town several times, but it has been years since the last time and I really wanted to go back.

El segundo fin de semana del mes pasado, septiembre, me fui a la playa con mi amiga Carol, habíamos planeado este viaje hace un tiempo y finalmente nos encontramos en el terminal de Maracay (Aragua-Venezuela) ese viernes en la mañana para salir rumbo a Choroní. He ido varias veces a este pueblo costero, pero desde la última vez pasaron años y tenía muchas ganas de volver.

I have always gone to Choroní by public transport, and although it can be a little uncomfortable because they take a long time to leave, the buses are old, the seats are not so cushioned, the curves of the road (which are quite a few) are felt more, they play the music at full volume (almost always sounds erotic salsa) and some more details, I recommend to live this experience at least once, I even missed it 😂, as I had a few years without going I thought it would have changed, but no, this way of traveling that is part of the popular Venezuelan, has refused to die.

Siempre he ido a Choroní en transporte público, y aunque puede ser un poco incómodo porque se tardan en salir, los autobuses son viejos, los asientos no tan acolchados, las curvas del camino (que son bastantes) se sienten más, ponen la música a full volumen (casi siempre suena salsa erótica) y algún detalle más, recomiendo vivir esta experiencia al menos una vez, yo hasta la extrañaba 😂, como tenía unos años sin ir pensé que habría cambiado, pero no, este modo de viajar que forma parte de lo popular venezolano, se ha negado a morir.

I arrived at the terminal at about 9:00 am and my friend a little later. There were people but not so many, however when the bus that would take us to Choroní showed up, more people showed up too. My friend and I were almost last, thank goodness we got in because who knows what time the next one would leave. We were in the back seats, in the kitchen as they say here 😆. I sat at the end and Carol a little further in front, there were also people standing, it was full. It was already 10:30 am when the driver came by to collect the fare, and then we finally left, the fare was $3, the good thing is that they accept any form of payment: dollars, bolivars, mobile payment. For those who want to go more comfortably there is also the option of taking a cab, you pay per seat (4 people) and they charge $7.50.

Yo llegué al terminal como a las 9:00 am y mi amiga un poco después. Había gente pero no tanta, sin embargo cuando apareció el autobús que nos llevaría a Choroní, apareció también más gente. Mi amiga y yo casi quedamos de últimas, menos mal que entramos porque quién sabe a qué hora saldría el siguiente. Nos tocaron los puestos de atrás, en la cocina como le dicen aquí 😆. Yo me senté al final y Carol un poco más alante, también había gente que iba parada, estaba full. Ya eran las 10:30 am cuando el conductor pasó a cobrar el pasaje, y luego por fin salimos, la tarifa fue de $3, lo bueno es que aceptan cualquier forma de pago: dólares, bolívares, pago móvil. Para los que quieren ir más cómodos existe también la opción de ir en taxi, se paga por puesto (llevan 4 personas) y te cobran $7,50.

When the bus started, those who were standing sat on the floor, on their bags or on the stairs in the back. The road to Choroní has many curves and any braking can knock you down, even sitting down you can fall off the seat 😂.

Cuando el autobús arrancó, los que iban parados se sentaron en el piso, sobre sus bolsos o en las escaleras que están en la parte de atrás. La vía hacia Choroní tiene muchas curvas y cualquier frenazo te puede tumbar, incluso sentada te puedes caer del asiento 😂.

From Maracay to Choroní are 48.7 km, as the road has some difficulty, you get there in a couple of hours. When you reach the area of Las Delicias, you gradually leave the city behind and enter the domains of Henri Pittier National Park, the oldest in Venezuela (decreed in 1937) and has an area of 107,800 hectares. Immediately you are invaded by the freshness of the tropical rainforest, as I didn't get to sit by the window I could barely take a couple of pictures of the road, but I assure you it is beautiful, there is a lot of vegetation, waterfalls and bird songs, in fact this place is known worldwide for those who like to observe them, more than 500 species have been identified here.

De Maracay a Choroní son 48,7 Km, como la carretera tiene cierta dificultad, se llega en un par de horas. Cuando alcanzas la zona de Las Delicias, vas dejando poco a poco la ciudad atrás y te adentras en los dominios del Parque Nacional Henri Pittier, el más antiguo de Venezuela (decretado en 1937) y que cuenta con una superficie de 107.800 hectáreas. Inmediatamente te invade la frescura de la selva tropical húmeda, como no conseguí sentarme al lado de la ventana, apenas pude hacer un par de fotos de la vía, pero les aseguro que es preciosa, hay mucha vegetación, cascadas y cantos de aves, de hecho este lugar es mundialmente conocido por los que les gusta observarlas, se han identificado más de 500 especies aquí.

In these mountains that are part of the Coastal Mountain Range, also inhabit monkeys, pumas, tapirs, deer, ocelots, snakes, bats and many more animals, is a very important space for the conservation of hundreds of species, some in danger of extinction.

En estas montañas que son parte de la Cordillera de la Costa, tambien habitan monos, pumas, dantas, ciervos, ocelotes, serpientes, murciélagos y muchos animales más, es un espacio muy importante para la conservación de cientos de especies, algunas en peligro de extinción.

And so, thinking about ecology, admiring nature, longing for the beach and shaken by the curves and the stridency of the music, we arrived at the town of Choroní at noon. We passed by the Bolívar Square, where the church is also located, and continued on to Puerto Colombia, a few minutes further on, where all the tourist activity is concentrated since the beaches are closer.

Y así, pensando en la ecología, admirando la naturaleza, anhelando la playa y sacudida por las curvas y la estridencia de la música, llegamos al pueblo de Choroní al mediodía. Pasamos por la Plaza Bolívar, donde está también la iglesia, y seguimos hacia Puerto Colombia, unos minutos más adelante, es allí donde se concentra toda la actividad turística ya que las playas están más cerca.

In Choroní there are many plantations and farms, this area is a great producer of cocoa, one of the best in the world according to experts 😋.

En Choroní hay muchos sembradíos y haciendas, esta zona es una gran productora de cacao, de los mejores del mundo dicen los expertos 😋.

Finally we arrived at the town's terminal, we got off the bus and walked a few meters to the center of Puerto Colombia, our first objective was to find an inn, we prefer not to book in advance, you get better prices by looking around the site.

Finalmente llegamos al terminal del pueblo, nos bajamos del autobús y caminamos unos metros hacia el centro de Puerto Colombia, nuestro primer objetivo era buscar una posada, preferimos no reservar con antelación, se consiguen mejores precios indagando en el sitio.

We were happy to stretch our legs, especially my friend Carol, she told me she was almost the whole trip with one buttock out of the seat 😂.

Estábamos felices de poder estirar las piernas, sobre todo mi amiga Carol, me dijo que estuvo casi todo el viaje con una nalga fuera del asiento 😂.

On one side of this road is the river running, it is a beauty with all those huge rocks and towering trees around it. The water here is quite cold as it comes down from the mountain.

A un lado de esta vía está el río corriendo, es una belleza con todas esas enormes piedras y árboles altísimos a su alrededor. El agua aquí es bastante fría ya que baja de la montaña.

We were about to arrive at the main street of Puerto Colombia, from the moment you leave the terminal you see inns everywhere, there are many options for all budgets.

Ya estábamos a punto de llegar a la calle principal de Puerto Colombia, desde que sales del terminal ves posadas por todos lados, hay muchas opciones y para todos los bolsillos.

See what a wonderful environment the entrance has, a magical anteroom to this tropical paradise on the coast of Aragua state.

Vean qué maravilloso entorno tiene la entrada, una mágica antesala a este paraíso tropical de la costa del estado Aragua.

The streets of this town founded in 1616 are very beautiful, with colonial style houses, most of them very well preserved.

Las calles de este pueblo fundado en 1616 son muy bonitas, con casas de estilo colonial, la mayoría muy bien conservadas.

We continued walking a few more meters and found a nice looking posada, it had a sign outside offering rooms. We asked around and it cost $15 a night for two people, we asked to see it, we thought it was cool and that was it, we stayed there for the weekend, its name: Posada Tucán.

Seguimos caminando unos metros más y encontramos una posada que se veía agradable, afuera tenía un letrero ofreciendo habitaciones. Preguntamos y costaba $15 la noche para dos personas, pedimos verla, nos pareció chévere y listo, allí nos quedamos el fin de semana, su nombre: Posada Tucán.

We quickly changed clothes and went to the beach without wasting any time.

Nos cambiamos de ropa rápidamente y nos fuimos a la playa sin perder tiempo.
