Traveling on the Train at the End of the World, Ushuaia - Argentina 🇦🇷 Viajando en el Tren del Fin del Mundo, Ushuaia - Argentina

After getting to know the city a little bit, as I showed you in the previous post, it was time to go on adventures around Ushuaia, where both by land and by sea, there are plenty of places to visit. We took a cab, and seeing beautiful snow-capped mountains along the way, we arrived at our destination 8 km later.

Luego de conocer un poco la ciudad, como les mostré en la publicación anterior, era hora de emprender aventuras por los alrededores de Ushuaia, donde tanto por tierra como por mar, hay muchísimos lugares para visitar. Tomamos un taxi, y viendo hermosas montañas nevadas por el camino, llegamos a nuestro destino 8 km después.

Known as the End of the World Train or Fueguino Southern Railway, it is a must-see tourist attraction if you come to this part of the world, not only because of the impressive nature here, but also because of the history that surrounds it.

Conocido como el Tren del Fin del Mundo o Ferrocarril Austral Fueguino, es un punto turístico imperdible si vienes a esta parte del mundo, no sólo por la impresionante naturaleza que hay aquí, sino también por la historia que lo envuelve.

Located inside the Tierra del Fuego National Park, Argentine Patagonia, this steam locomotive makes the same route that the Ushuaia prison train used to make through the forests of this area, to transport firewood and other materials to the town, we are talking about the year 1910.

Ubicada dentro del Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego, Patagonia argentina, esta locomotora a vapor realiza el mismo recorrido que hacía el tren de la cárcel de Ushuaia a través de los bosques de esta zona, para trasladar leña y otros materiales al pueblo, estamos hablando del año 1910.

When we arrived at the station, my mom and I were fascinated by the scenery, although at first the sky was cloudy and we feared rain, later on a radiant sun came out and the cold didn't affect us so much. We bought our tickets and boarded the train with great excitement. Since the 1990s, these replicas of the old steam locomotives have been operated for tourism and are equipped with heating and an audio system to listen to the history of the train.

Cuando llegamos a la estación, mi mamá y yo quedamos fascinadas con el paisaje, aunque al principio el cielo estaba nublado y temíamos que lloviera, más adelante salió un sol radiante y así el frío no nos afectó tanto. Compramos nuestros boletos y abordamos el tren con mucha emoción. Desde la década de 1990, estas réplicas de las antiguas locomotoras a vapor funcionan para el turismo y cuentan con calefacción y sistema de audio para escuchar la historia del tren.

The one below, is the only photo I have inside the train, as it was cloudy outside, the lighting in the carriages was poor and the shots came out very dark, only this one came out well with flash, anyway you can see that the tables accompanying the seats are made of wood and in the windows there are elegant curtains 😉.

La que sigue, es la única foto que tengo dentro del tren, como afuera estaba nublado, la iluminación en los vagones era pobre y las tomas salían muy oscuras, sólo esta salió bien con flash, de todas maneras pueden ver que las mesas que acompañan los asientos son de madera y en las ventanas hay cortinas elegantes 😉.

During the trip you can't take your eyes off the window because everything around is a delight: forests, rivers, mountains, peat bogs (wetlands)...

Durante el trayecto no puedes despegar la vista de la ventana porque todo alrededor es un deleite: bosques, ríos, montañas, turbales (humedales)...

The train stops in some places for people to get off and explore the surroundings for a few minutes.

El tren se detiene en algunos lugares para que la gente baje y explore los alrededores por unos minutos.

For example, we were able to see a place known as the Tree Cemetery, a large area by the river with a pile of logs, which are the remains of the forest that the prisoners cut down to use the wood for heating the city and in construction, when Ushuaia was founded, it was a penal colony.

Por ejemplo, pudimos ver un lugar conocido como el Cementerio de Árboles, una gran área al lado del río con un montón de troncos, que son los restos del bosque que talaron los presos para usar la madera en la calefacción de la ciudad y en la construcción, cuando se fundó Ushuaia, era una colonia penal.

We also saw around there a recreation of a Yámana settlement, one of the indigenous peoples that inhabited these lands for at least 6,000 years.

También vimos por allí una recreación de un asentamiento yámana, uno de los pueblos indígenas que habitó estas tierras por al menos 6.000 años.

They were nomadic hunters, navigating in search of food.

Their diet: sea lions, mollusks, mussels and mushrooms (Indian bread).}

I found these natives incredible, the conditions in Tierra del Fuego are rough, I wondered how they withstood the intense cold? The guides there told us that although they didn't cover themselves much, they used some animal skins, and they also smeared sea lion fat on their bodies and that helped them against the low temperatures, how impressive wasn't it? And of course, they had also developed resistance to this climate.

Estos nativos me parecieron increíbles, las condiciones de Tierra del Fuego son rudas, me pregunté ¿cómo soportaban el intenso frío? Los guías que había allí nos dijeron que aunque no se cubrían mucho, usaban algunas pieles de animales, y además se untaban grasa de lobo marino en el cuerpo y eso los ayudaba contra las bajas temperaturas, qué impresionante ¿no? Y claro, también habían desarrollado resistencia a este clima.

We returned to the train to continue the trip, which in total is 7 km round trip, but as it is slow and there are stops, we were told that lasts approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes. The following photos were taken from the window of the carriage and because of the reflection of the glass, they came out somewhat opaque, anyway I didn't exclude them because I liked them 😊.

Volvimos al tren para continuar el recorrido, que en total es de 7 km ida y vuelta, pero como se avanza lento y hay paradas, nos dijeron que el trayecto dura aproximadamente 1 hora y 50 minutos. Las siguientes fotos las hice desde la ventana del vagón y por el reflejo del vidrio, salieron algo opacas, de todos modos no las excluí porque me gustaron 😊.

And so we reached the end of the train ride, the last stop: National Park Station. Those who wanted to, could return to the beginning by taking the train again, or stay there to explore some trails. The sun was already up, and I was anxious to walk through the beautiful scenery, my mom was not very sure but I convinced her.

Y así llegamos al fin del paseo en tren, a la última parada: Estación Parque Nacional. Los que querían, podían regresar al inicio tomando nuevamente el tren, o quedarse allí para explorar algunos senderos. Ya había salido el sol, y yo estaba ansiosa por caminar entre ese bello paisaje, mi mamá no estaba muy segura pero la convencí.

My adventurous spirit told me it was more exciting to walk rather than take the train back, so we took off on a path not knowing where it would take us.

Mi espíritu aventurero me decía que era más emocionante caminar en vez de tomar nuevamente el tren para regresar, así que nos fuimos por una vía sin saber a dónde nos llevaría.

There were no people around and my mom was a little worried, but after about 15 minutes, we found something lovely.

No había gente por ahí y mi mamá estaba algo preocupada, pero luego de unos 15 minutos, encontramos algo encantador.

A sign pointed us to a wooden house that looked like something out of a fairy tale, it was a Tea House and restaurant, and since we were hungry, we didn't hesitate to go there.

Un letrero nos señalaba una casa de madera que parecía salida de un cuento, era una Casa de Té y restaurante, y como teníamos hambre, no dudamos en ir hacia allá.

The menu offered a wide variety of drinks, and the one that caught our attention was the red fruit tea, and that was what we ordered along with some sandwiches. An anecdote of this moment is that here we tasted the calafate (Berberis microphylla), a small fruit similar to the blueberry that grows on a thorny bush, and they say that if you eat it, you will come back to this place, is it true?

La carta ofrecía una gran variedad de bebidas, y la que nos llamó la atención fue el té de frutos rojos, y eso fue lo que pedimos junto a unos sándwiches. Una anécdota de este momento es que aquí probamos el calafate (Berberis microphylla), una pequeña fruta parecida al arándano que crece en un espinoso arbusto, y que dicen que si lo comes, volverás a este lugar, ¿será verdad?

In the outskirts of this house we were able to share a nice time with a boy who was playing with his dogs, one of them was a husky, a breed that is often seen in this region.

En las afueras de esta casa pudimos compartir un rato agradable con un niño que estaba jugando con sus perros, uno de ellos era un husky, una raza que se ve mucho en esta región.

We said goodbye and started our way back to the initial station of the End of the World Train, we arrived and while we were waiting for a cab to go to the city, we came across some horses grazing around, they seemed to have no owner, they looked beautiful and wild in that scenery.

Nos despedimos y emprendimos el camino de regreso hasta la estación inicial del Tren del Fin del Mundo, llegamos y mientras esperábamos un taxi para ir a la ciudad, nos topamos con unos caballos pastando por ahí, parecían no tener dueño, se veían hermosos y salvajes en ese escenario.
