Hey guys! After showing you some of my photographic results from Chicago already, I finally found the time to write my travel report about the "Windy City", which lived up to its nickname very much during my visit, although "Rainy City" would probably have been even more appropriate. In fact, I had only one sunny day, that was wintry cold on the other hand, with temperatures ranging from 5 to 10°C. But I didn't let the bad weather stop me and so I bravely went out day after day, armed with an umbrella, my camera and my phone, to make myself an impression of the American metropolis.
Hallo Leute! Nachdem ich euch schon einige meiner fotografischen Ergebnisse aus Chicago gezeigt habe, fand ich nun endlich auch die Zeit, meinen Reisebericht über die "Windy City" zu erstellen. Die Stadt machte ihrem Spitznamen während meines Besuchs alle Ehre, wobei "Rainy City" wohl noch passender gewesen wäre. Tatsächlich hatte ich nur einen einzigen sonnigen Tag, der dafür jedoch mit Temperaturen zwischen 5 und 10°C winterlich kalt war. Doch vom schlechten Wetter ließ ich mich nicht beirren und zog Tag für Tag tapfer mit Regenschirm, Kamera und Handy bewaffnet los, um mir einen Eindruck von der amerikanischen Metropole zu machen.
To say it right away - unfortunately my time in Chicago was only enough to explore the city centre. This article therefore only refers to downtown Chicago, in other words the areas directly north and south of the Chicago River. When I arrived, I was immediately surprised at how cheap and easy it is to get from the airport to the city centre by metro. The ticket costs just $5. After moving into my hotel, I started my first city walk and was amazed by the architecture and the many skyscrapers. It was my first trip to the USA since 2014 and I felt very comfortable right from the start.
Um es gleich vorwegzunehmen - leider reichte meine Zeit in Chicago nur aus, um das Zentrum zu erkunden. Dieser Beitrag bezieht sich somit nur auf Downtown Chicago, also die Bereiche direkt nördlich und südlich des Chicago River. Bei meiner Ankunft war ich gleich überrascht, wie günstig und unkompliziert man mit mit der U-Bahn vom Flughafen ins Zentrum gelangt. Gerade einmal 5$ kostet das Ticket. Nach Bezug meines Hotels startete ich gleich sofort mit meinem ersten Stadtspaziergang und war begeistert von der Architektur und den vielen Wolkenkratzern. Es war für mich die erste USA-Reise seit 2014 und ich fühlte mich gleich von Anfang an sehr wohl.
I was immediately fascinated by the Riverwalk and the atmosphere at blue hour on the Chicago River. The next day, I discovered one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the city. I'm talking about the so-called London House. Here you can enjoy the view of the Chicago River and the city centre for free. To do so, you simply take the elevator to the sky bar and then walk up the stairs to the roof terrace. This place is not to be missed. Of course you can enjoy the view with a cocktail, but you don't have to, so this is probably one of the best free attractions of the city.
Sofort begeistert war ich vom Riverwalk und der Stimmung zur blauen Stunde am Chicago River. Am nächsten Tag entdeckte ich dann einen der schönsten Aussichtspunkte der Stadt. Es handelt sich um das sogenannte London House. Hier kann man total kostenlos den Blick auf den Chicago River und das Stadtzentrum genießen. Hierzu fährt man einfach mit dem Lift zur Skybar und geht dann die Treppen zur Dachterrasse hinauf. Diesen Ort solltet ihr auf keinen Fall verpassen. Natürlich könnt ihr die Aussicht mit einem Cocktail genießen, ihr müsst aber nicht und somit handelt es sich wohl um eine der besten kostenlosen Attraktionen der Stadt.
Next on my list of sights to see were the famous Chicago Theatre and the Cloud Gate. The first is a very nice photographic subject and particularly impressive at night, when the colorful lights make it shine in all its glory. I was less enthusiastic about the chrome sculpture of the Cloud Gate, or „The Bean“, as it is also called. But that was mainly due to the crowds of tourists. The sculpture itself is very fascinating with its reflections.
Als nächstes standen das berühmte Chicago Theatre und das Cloud Gate auf meiner Liste von Sehenswürdigkeiten, die ich mir ansehen wollte. Ersteres ist ein sehr schönes Foto-Motiv und beeindruckt vor allem nachts, wenn es die bunten Lichter in vollem Glanz erstrahlen lassen. Von der verchromten Skulptur des Cloud Gate oder „The Bean“, wie es auch genannt wird, war ich hingegen weniger begeistert. Das lag aber vor allem an den Touristenmassen. Die Skulptur selbst ist mit ihren Spiegelungen sehr faszinierend.
What makes Chicago particularly unique for me is the above-ground metro system, which always gave me spectacular views and great opportunities to get photographically creative. Whether you look up from the street or down from one of the countless parking garages onto the tracks, it's always impressive to see the trains whizzing through the canyons of skyscrapers. Some of the stations also look as if they were from a long time ago. Here I would like to highlight "Quincy" station, which conveys the charm of the 1920s.
Was Chicago für mich besonders einzigartig macht, ist das oberirdische Metro-System, das mir immer wieder spektakuläre Aussichten und tolle Möglichkeiten, fotografisch kreativ zu werden, bescherte. Egal ob man von der Straße hinaufblickt oder von einer der unzähligen Parkgaragen hinunter auf die Schienen, es beeindruckt immer wieder, zu sehen, wie die Züge durch die Hochhaus-Schluchten rauschen. Teilweise wirken die Stationen auch, wie aus längst vergangenen Zeiten. Hier möchte ich besonders die Station "Quincy" hervorheben, die den Charme der 1920er Jahre vermittelt.
One of my favourite city walks took me past the Water Tower and my favourite skyscraper in the city, the John Hancock Center, to the shore of Lake Michigan. Here you can find a kilometre-long promenade and a fine sandy beach. Due to the size of the lake and the earth's curvature, all you can see here is water all the way to the horizon. This gives you the feeling of being by the sea. Unfortunately, I could only daydream about a sunny, warm beach day and a view of the skyline while swimming in the lake, while I walked along the coast in my warm winter jacket.
Einer meiner Lieblings-Stadtspaziergänge führte mich am Water Tower und meinem Lieblings-Wolkenkratzer der Stadt, dem John Hancock Center vorbei, bis zum Ufer des Lake Michigan. Hier findet man eine kilometerlange Uferpromenade und einen feinsandigen Strand. Aufgrund der Größe des Sees und der Erdkrümmung, sieht man hier bis zum Horizont nur Wasser, was einem das Gefühl vermittelt, dass man sich am Meer befindet. Von einem sonnig warmen Strandtag und dem Blick auf die Skyline während ich im See schwimme, konnte ich aber leider nur tagträumen, während ich mit dicker Winterjacke die Küste entlangspazierte.
On my second last day in Chicago, I was lucky enough to watch a sailing ship pass through the Chicago River. The real attraction, however, was not the ship, but the movable bridges that were opened one by one, making the passage possible. On this day, I even had a few hours of sunshine before the skyscrapers were wrapped in dark clouds again. At least I was able to see the tallest building in the city, the Willis Tower, in good weather.
An meinem vorletzten Tag in Chicago hatte ich das Glück, die Durchfahrt eines Segelschiffes durch den Chicago River beobachten zu können. Die eigentliche Attraktion war dabei aber nicht das Schiff, sondern die beweglichen Brücken, die nach und nach geöffnet wurden und somit die Durchfahrt möglich machten. An diesem Tag hatte ich sogar einige Sonnenstunden, bevor die Wolkenkratzer sich erneut in dichte Wolken hüllten. Zumindest konnte ich mir das höchste Gebäude der Stadt, den Willis Tower noch bei Schönwetter ansehen.
In summary, I can say that I was very fascinated by Chicago. The city is simply incredibly photogenic and elegant, which of course makes it even more interesting for me as a photographer. So I was also able to take advantage of my bad luck with the weather to shoot some atmospheric photos. Nevertheless, I would be very keen to experience Chicago next time in summer, to swim in Lake Michigan, to admire wonderful sunsets with a view of the skyline and also to explore areas outside the city centre. I'm sure the Windy City will see me again someday.
Zusammenfassend kann ich sagen, dass ich doch sehr begeistert von Chicago war. Die Stadt ist einfach wahnsinnig fotogen und elegant, was sie für mich als Fotograf natürlich noch interessanter macht. Somit konnte ich auch mein Pech mit dem Wetter nutzen, um einige stimmungsvolle Fotos zu schießen. Trotzdem würde es mich sehr reizen, Chicago das nächste Mal im Sommer zu erleben, im Lake Michigan zu baden, traumhafte Sonnenuntergänge mit Blick auf die Skyline zu bewundern und auch Gegenden außerhalb des Zentrums zu erkunden. Ich bin mir sicher, die „Windy City“ wird mich irgendwann wiedersehen.

Wow what a trip. Love all the cityscapes. The fascinating buildings. Even though the weather wasn’t great. This city has so much character. I wouldn’t even be able to stop photographing hahaha
