A castle, an old fortress ruin, a chapel hidden in the woods and one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the city - although Graz is my hometown, I had never explored the sights of the Gösting district. But yesterday was finally the day. My girlfriend and I took the half-hour bus ride from the city centre to the northernmost district of Graz to start an interesting hike, which I would like to tell you about today.
Ein Schloss, eine alte Burgruine, eine im Wald versteckte Kapelle und einer der schönsten Aussichtspunkte der Stadt – obwohl Graz meine Heimatstadt ist, hatte ich die Sehenswürdigkeiten des Stadtteils Gösting noch nie erkundet. Doch gestern war es endlich soweit. Meine Freundin und ich nahmen die halbstündige Busfahrt vom Zentrum zum nördlichsten Stadtteil von Graz auf uns, um eine interessante Wanderung zu starten, von der ich euch heute berichten möchte.
Gösting is the 13th district of Graz and has only been part of the Styrian capital since 1946. We started our tour at Gösting Castle. It was built in the middle of the eighteenth century after the old fortress was damaged by fire and had not been renovated completely. Since then, only a ruin of the castle exists, which can be reached via a hike of about 30 minutes. We did not want to miss this highlight. So we started hiking up the narrow mountain road.
Gösting ist der 13. Grazer Stadtbezirk und erst seit 1946 ein Teil der steirischen Landeshauptstadt. Unsere Besichtigung begannen wir am Schloss Gösting. Es wurde Mitte des achtzehnten Jahrhunderts erbaut, nachdem die alte Burg durch einen Brand beschädigt und nicht wieder vollständig renoviert wurde. Von der Burg existiert seither nur noch eine Ruine, die man über eine ungefähr 30-minütige Wanderung erreichen kann. Dieses Highlight wollten wir uns nicht entgehen lassen. Also begannen wir, die schmale Bergstraße hinaufzuwandern.
After a few minutes we could already enjoy beautiful views of the city centre of Graz and the castle hill. Soon the asphalt road ended and turned into a narrow gravel path. As planned, we arrived at the ruin after about half an hour, but unfortunately it was closed. Later I researched that the castle tavern and the small museum had already been closed in 2020 after parts of the castle walls collapsed. However, renovation work is planned and in the meantime there are at least guided tours of the castle grounds available again. Despite the disappointment of the closed gate, it was interesting to see the old walls from the outside. But the highlight of our hike was yet to come.
Nach einigen Minuten konnten wir bereits schöne Ausblicke auf das Grazer Stadtzentrum und den Schlossberg genießen. Bald endete die asphaltierte Straße und ging in einen schmalen Schotterweg über. Wie geplant, kamen wir nach ungefähr einer halben Stunde bei der Ruine an, die jedoch leider geschlossen war. Später recherchierte ich, dass die Burgtaverne und das kleine Museum bereits 2020 geschlossen wurden, nachdem Teile der Burgmauern einstürzten. Es sind aber Renovierungsarbeiten geplant und mittlerweile gibt es zumindest wieder geführte Touren auf dem Burggelände. Trotz der Enttäuschung über das geschlossene Tor, war es interessant, die alten Gemäuer von außen zu betrachten. Doch das Highlight unserer Wanderung stand uns erst noch bevor.
Only a five-minute walk from the castle, you can find one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Graz - the so-called Jungfernsprung. We were more than delighted by the magnificent view on this wonderfully sunny day. The hiking path along the rock face made us almost forget that we were on the outskirts of a big city. In addition, we also had a unique view of the castle ruins here. If it hadn't been so hot in the blazing afternoon sun, we would probably have spent even more time here. But we had another destination on our hike.
Nur einen fünfminütigen Spaziergang von der Burg entfernt, findet man einen der schönsten Aussichtspunkte von Graz – den sogenannten Jungfernsprung. Wir waren mehr als begeistert von der wunderschönen Aussicht an diesem herrlich sonnigen Tag. Der Wanderpfad an der Felswand entlang, ließ uns fast vergessen, dass wir uns am Rande einer Großstadt befanden. Außerdem hatten wir hier auch einen einzigartigen Blick auf die Burgruine. Wäre es is der prallen Nachmittagssonne nicht so heißt gewesen, hätten wir hier wohl noch mehr Zeit verbracht. Doch wir hatten noch ein weiteres Ziel auf unserer Wanderung.
We had heard about a chapel that is quite hidden in the middle of the forest of the Ruin Mountain. We had to search a bit and use Google Maps to find it, but finally we reached it via very narrow trails. The small building is not particularly spectacular, but it was still a nice experience to sit on the little bench in front of the chapel and enjoy the quiet ambience. Afterwards, we walked along the edge of a small vineyard back to the hiking trail and then back to the city.
Wir hatten nämlich von einer Kapelle gehört, die sich ziemlich versteckt, mitten im Wald des Ruinenberges befindet. Wir mussten schon etwas suchen und Google Maps verwenden, um sie zu finden, doch schließlich erreichten wir sie über sehr schmale Trampelpfade. Sonderlich spektakulär ist das kleine Gebäude nicht, doch trotzdem war es eine schöne Erfahrung, auf dem kleinen Bänkchen vor der Kapelle zu sitzen und die ruhige Idylle zu genießen. Anschließend ging es am Rande eines kleinen Weinbergs für uns wieder zurück zum Wanderpfad und in weiterer Folge in die Stadt.
I can only encourage you to try visiting new places and sights in your hometown. Even though I know Graz so well, the trip felt like a little holiday. If you're ever in the area and wanted to visit Austria's second largest city, I highly recommend this hike and maybe you'll even be lucky and the grounds of the old castle ruins will be open again.
Ich kann euch nur dazu ermutigen, mal zu versuchen, neue Orte und Sehenswürdigkeiten in eurer Heimatstadt zu besuchen. Obwohl ich Graz so gut kenne, fühlte sich der Ausflug wie ein kleiner Urlaub an. Falls ihr mal in der Gegend seid und die zweitgrößte Stadt Österreichs besuchen wollt, kann ich euch diese Wanderung nur empfehlen und vielleicht habt ihr ja sogar Glück und das Gelände der alten Burgruine wird bereits wieder geöffnet sein.
