Hello friends! Today I would like to tell you about one of the probably most beautiful beaches in Europe. Maybe it will surprise you that it is located in Albania. The Balkan state is still an insider tip when it comes to European destinations for a summer vacation and therefore I assume that hardly any of you have ever heard of Ksamil. This small seaside resort with its nearly 3,000 inhabitants is located in the very south of the Albanian Riviera and is easiest to reach by car or bus from the city of Saranda, which I already told you about in this post.
Hallo Freunde! Heute möchte ich euch von einem der wahrscheinlich schönsten Strände Europas berichten. Vielleicht wird es euch überraschen, dass sich dieser ausgerechnet in Albanien befindet. Der Balkan-Staat ist noch immer ein Geheimtipp, wenn es um europäische Destinationen für einen Sommerurlaub geht und somit gehe ich davon aus, dass kaum jemand von euch schon einmal von Ksamil gehört hat. Dieser kleine Badeort mit seinen knapp 3.000 Einwohnern befindet sich ganz im Süden der albanischen Riviera und lässt sich am einfachsten mit dem Auto oder Bus von der Stadt Saranda erreichen, über die ich euch in diesem Beitrag schon einiges erzählt habe.
Since Saranda has a much better tourist infrastructure than Ksamil, I would recommend you to book accommodation there and take the bus in the direction of Butrint. This bus runs from morning to evening every half hour and costs only 100 Albanian Lek, which is about 0.94$. On the picture above you can see the exact schedule on the left. Fun fact: The buses are discarded models from Germany. On the bus in the picture on the top right, therefore, even the German word "Betriebsfahrt" is still shown on the digital display.
Da Saranda über eine wesentlich bessere touristische Infrastruktur als Ksamil verfügt, würde ich euch empfehlen, dort eine Unterkunft zu buchen und den Bus in Richtung Butrint zu nehmen. Dieser fährt von morgens bis Abends jede halbe Stunde und kostet nur 100 albanische Lek, was ungefähr 0,83€ entspricht. Auf dem obigen Bild seht ihr links den genauen Zeitplan. Fun-Fact: Bei den Bussen handelt es sich um ausrangierte Modelle aus Deutschland. Auf dem Bus im Bild rechts oben steht deshalb sogar noch immer das deutsche Wort „Betriebsfahrt“ auf der digitalen Anzeige.
From the bus stop in Ksamil it is only a short walk down a small side street to the sea. Once you arrive, you will first encounter this beach (picture above), which is already very beautiful. However, a really breathtaking experience awaits you only if you follow the path along the coast for a few minutes further to the south. Because then you will eventually find this view:
Von der Bushaltestelle in Ksamil ist es nur ein kurzer Fußweg über eine kleine Seitenstraße hinab zum Meer. Unten angekommen werdet ihr zuerst auf den diesen Strand (Bild oben) treffen, der auch bereits sehr schön ist. Doch richtig atemberaubend wird es erst, wenn ihr der dem Weg an der Küste für einige Minuten weiter nach Süden folgt. Denn dann werdet ihr irgendwann auf diesen Ausblick treffen:
What a sight! I could hardly believe that I was still in Europe. In general, Ksamil reminded me very much of Southeast Asia. Here you can see the first of the three small islands that are located just off the coast. The distance is so short that you can easily reach them by swimming. An alternative would be to take a pedal boat. Island hopping by pedal boat - here it is possible.
Was für ein Anblick! Ich konnte kaum glauben, dass ich mich noch in Europa befand. Generell erinnerte mich Ksamil sehr an Südostasien. Hier seht ihr auch schon die erste, der drei kleinen Inseln, die sich direkt vor der Küste befinden. Die Entfernung ist so gering, dass ihr einfach zu ihnen schwimmen könnt. Eine Alternative wäre, ein Tretboot zu nehmen. Island-Hopping mit dem Tretboot - hier ist es möglich.
Arrived at the beach I could hardly wait to jump into the crystal clear, turquoise blue water. But first I looked for a sun bed, which was relatively cheaply priced at 500 Lek (4.70$) per day. Although the tourists are mainly Albanians, it can get very crowded here in the summer. My travel month of September was certainly not a bad choice, because the beach was well visited, but not overcrowded.
Am Strand angekommen konnte ich es kaum erwarten, mich in das glasklare, türkisblaue Wasser zu stürzen. Zuerst suchte ich mir aber eine Liege, die mit 500 Lek (4,15€) pro Tag relativ günstig bepreist war. Obwohl es sich bei den Touristen hauptsächlich um Albaner handelt, kann es im Sommer hier sehr voll werden. Mein Reisemonat September war sicher keine schlechte Wahl, denn der Strand war zwar gut besucht, aber nicht überfüllt.
By the way, Ksamil is located on a strait. The Greek island of Corfu really seems close enough to touch and is actually only 4km away from Ksamil. An internationally known and popular dream vacation island and a small unknown Albanian coastal town, which is at least as beautiful: Two different worlds - so close to each other - so similar and yet so different...
Übrigens befindet sich Ksamil an einer Meerenge. Die griechische Insel Korfu wirkt hier wirklich zum Greifen nah und liegt tatsächlich nur 4km von Ksamil entfernt. Eine international bekannte und beliebte Traum-Urlaubsinsel und ein kleiner unbekannter, albanischer Küstenort, der aber mindestens genauso schön ist: Zwei verschiedene Welten - so nah beieinander - so ähnlich und doch so verschieden…
But before it gets too philosophical, I'll show you my pasta carbonara, which I enjoyed in an excellent restaurant with a beautiful beach view. Together with a drink I paid the equivalent of just under 11$. The price level in Ksamil is generally a little higher than in the rest of Albania, but in international comparison still very cheap.
Bevor es aber zu philosophisch wird, zeige ich euch noch meine Pasta Carbonara, die ich in einem hervorragenden Restaurant mit wunderschönem Strandblick genoß. Zusammen mit einem Getränk bezahlte ich umgerechnet knapp 10€. Das Preisniveau in Ksamil ist generell etwas höher, als im Rest Albaniens, jedoch im internationalen Vergleich noch immer sehr günstig.
I hope I could add a new entry to your travel bucket list with this post and I could also change your perspective on Albania a little bit. For me personally, Ksamil was one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever visited and I am sure that the entire region will benefit from tourism in the future and continue to flourish.
