Hello everyone! Today I would like to introduce you to the second stop on our little three-day road trip south-west of Mexico City. It is a so-called Pueblo Magico. That's the name given to villages and small towns with special cultural significance in Mexico. Some of them are very well known, while others are relatively overlooked internationally. Malinalko definitely belongs to the second category, which is quite undeserved. Just read on if you want to know what there is to discover in this idyllic little town, just a 2-hour drive from the Mexican capital.
Hallo zusammen! Heute möchte ich euch die zweite Station unseres kleinen, dreitägigen Roadtrips südwestlich von Mexico City vorstellen. Es handelt sich um ein sogenanntes Pueblo Magico. So werden Dörfer und Kleinstädte mit besonderer kultureller Bedeutung in Mexiko bezeichnet. Einige davon sind sehr bekannt, andere wiederum international relativ unbeachtet. Malinalko gehört definitiv zur zweiten Kategorie, doch das völlig zu unrecht. Lest einfach weiter, wenn ihr wissen wollt, was es in dieser idyllischen Kleinstadt, nur 2 Stunden Fahrzeit von der mexikansichen Hauptstadt entfernt, zu entdecken gibt.
As we walked down one of the main streets towards the town centre, we noticed the quiet, picturesque atmosphere. However, the main square with the typical Mexican lettering of the town's name was a lot more lively and colourful. Here we also found a huge so-called Catrina. This term is used to describe female skeletons that are installed around the Day of the Dead. Our next stop, the almost 500 year old convent of Malinalco, was just a few steps away.
Schon beim Spaziergang eine der Hauptstraßen hinab Richtung Ortszentrum fiel uns die ruhige, malerische Atmosphäre auf. Am Hauptplatz mit dem für Mexiko typischen Schriftzug des Ortsnamens wurde es allerdings um einiges quirliger und bunter. Hier fanden wir auch eine riesige sogenannte Catrina. So werden weibliche Skelette bezeichnet, die rund um den Tag der Toten aufgestellt werden. Unsere nächste Station, das fast 500 Jahre alte Kloster von Malinalco lag nur wenige Schritte entfernt.
The convent was built in the 16th century by Augustinian monks and is an outstanding example of colonial architecture in Mexico. In addition to its impressive structure, the frescoes in the monastery are particularly noteworthy. The walls are covered with breathtaking murals depicting biblical stories and religious motifs. These frescoes are considered masterpieces of Mexican art from the colonial era. To our surprise, admission was completely free and we were even given a personalised guided tour, also free of charge. Of course, this wonderful experience was worth a decent tip for our guide.
Das Kloster wurde im 16. Jahrhundert von Augustinermönchen erbaut und ist ein herausragendes Beispiel für die koloniale Architektur in Mexiko. Neben seiner beeindruckenden Struktur sind die Fresken im Kloster besonders bemerkenswert. Die Wände sind mit atemberaubenden Wandmalereien bedeckt, die biblische Geschichten und religiöse Motive darstellen. Diese Fresken gelten als Meisterwerke der mexikanischen Kunst aus der Kolonialzeit. Zu unserer Überraschung war der Eintritt völlig kostenlos und wir bekamen sogar eine ebenfalls kostenlose, persönliche Führung. Natürlich war uns diese wunderschöne Erfahrung aber ein ordentliches Trinkgeld für unseren Guide wert.
The convent also impresses from the outside with its historic ambience and well-kept courtyard. Just outside the monastery gate, we found the complete opposite. A classic Mexican market with many, many stalls and visitors invited us to stroll and shop. And I actually found what I was looking for and bought myself an original Mexican cowboy hat, which was a real bargain at the equivalent of just under €14.
Auch von außen beeindruckt das Kloster mit seinem historischen Ambiente und dem gepflegten Innenhof. Gleich vor dem Kloster-Tor fanden wir das krasse Gegenstück. Ein klassischer mexikanischer Markt mit vielen, vielen Ständen und Besuchern lud uns zum flanieren und shoppen ein. Und tatsächlich wurde ich fündig und legte mir einen original mexikanischen Cowboy-Hut zu, der mit umgerechnet knapp 14€ ein wahres Schnäppchen war.
We also tasted an exotic fruit called "Timbiriche". It tasted a bit strange and some of them were pretty sour. I later found out that this fruit is endemic to south-west Mexico, i.e. it doesn't occur anywhere else in nature. There was also a Mexican main course on our agenda that was new to me. "Molcajete" is a volcanic stone bowl filled with grilled meat, cactus leaves, cheese and a damn spicy sauce. By the way, Malinalco has a lot more to offer in terms of cuisine, but we didn't have the time for it.
Außerdem probierten wir eine exotische Frucht mit dem Namen "Timbiriche". Diese schmeckte etwas eigenartig und einige Exemplare waren ziemlich sauer. Später fand ich heraus, dass die Frucht im Südwesten von Mexiko endemisch ist, also nirgendwo anders in der Natur vorkommt. Auch eine für mich neue mexikanische Hauptspeise stand auf dem Programm. "Molcajete" ist eine Schale aus Vulkanstein, gefüllt mit gegrilltem Fleisch, Kaktusblättern, Käse und einer verdammt scharfen Soße. Kulinarisch hätte Malinalco übrigens noch einiges mehr zu bieten, aber dafür fehlte uns die Zeit.
It's simply fun to stroll along the many cobblestoned alleyways with their pretty little shops and restaurants in Malinalco. You always discover something unusual. In addition, you always have the marvellous green mountains of the surrounding area in view. The atmosphere is truly unique. We would also have loved to visit the ancient ruins. These are one of the absolute highlights of the town. But we didn't get any further than the entrance. Unfortunately, this area is closed to the public from 3.00 pm.
Es macht einfach Spaß, die vielen kopfsteingepflasterten Gassen mit ihren hübschen kleinen Geschäften und Restaurants in Malinalco entlangzuspazieren. Immer wieder entdeckt man etwas Außergewöhnliches. Außerdem hat man dabei immer die herrlich grünen Berge der Umgebung im Blickfeld. Die Atmosphäre ist wirklich einzigartig. Gerne hätten wir auch die antiken Ruinen-Stätten besucht. Diese stellen eines der absoluten Highlights des Städtchens dar. Doch wir kamen nicht weiter als bis zum Eingang. Unglücklicherweise ist dieser Bereich bereits ab 15.00 Uhr für die Öffentlichkeit geschlossen.
I have to admit, I was bitterly disappointed for hours that we couldn't visit the ruins. However, after all, the joy of having been able to visit this wonderful place outweighed the disappointment. And there was also another experience on our road trip that was completely new and extremely exciting for me. Of course, I will tell you about it in my next post.
Ich muss zugeben, ich war stundenlang bitter enttäuscht, dass wir die Ruinenstätte nicht besuchen konnten. Im Nachhinein überwiegt aber die Freude darüber, diesen wundervollen Ort besucht haben zu können. Außerdem gab es noch ein weiteres Erlebnis auf unserem Roadtrip, das für mich absolut neu und extrem spannend war. Natürlich werde ich euch im nächsten Beitrag davon berichten.

Small Mexican Village ... I like this trips :)) I hope you find more this small citys where to go , I see lot not do this in Mexico and they all time just let as see bigger cities what is not so fan ... smaller rural areas are full of many traditions that we are not even aware of... and one more thing , I very like this markets there I very want see this .
Yes, there are so many amazing small towns in Mexico. I really love visiting them. I think one lifetime would not be enough to see all beautiful towns in villages in Mexico 😅
