Hello everyone! In the last few days I was lucky enough to celebrate one of the most unique festivals in the world in its country of origin. I'm talking about the Mexican Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), which is celebrated on the 1st and 2nd of November and in its current form has evolved from the fusion of traditional Mexican culture and Christian religion. Together with my girlfriend and her parents, I travelled to a small, remote village called Mixquic, which is still part of the capital district of Mexico City, but can only be reached via a complicated one-and-a-half-hour drive. In this post, you can find out whether the trip was worth it.
Hallo zusammen! In den letzten Tagen hatte ich das Glück, eines der einzigartigsten Volksfeste der Welt in seinem Ursprungsland zu feiern. Ich spreche vom mexikanischen Dia de los Muertos (Tag der Toten), der am 1. und 2. November gefeiert wird und in seiner heutigen Form aus der Verschmelzung von traditionell mexikanischer Kultur und christlicher Religion entstanden ist. Gemeinsam mit meiner Freundin und ihren Eltern reiste ich dafür in ein kleines, abgelegenes Dorf namens Mixquic, das noch zum Hauptstadtdistrikt von Mexiko Stadt zählt, jedoch nur über eine umständliche, eineinhalb Stunden lange Autofahrt erreicht werden kann. Ob sich die Reise gelohnt hat, erfahrt ihr in diesem Beitrag.
For a long time during our drive, nothing hinted at the huge festival we would find in this small village with its 13,000 inhabitants. But at the latest when we walked along the first lively street, this changed drastically. The many colourful stalls once again caused me acute sensory overstimulation - as so often in Mexico. However, this is only meant in a positive way.
Während unserer Autofahrt deutete lange Zeit nichts auf das riesige Fest hin, das wir in diesem kleinen Dörfchen mit seinen 13.000 Einwohnern vorfinden würden. Spätestens als wir die erste belebte Straße entlangspazierten, änderte sich dies jedoch drastisch. Die vielen bunten Verkaufsstände sorgten bei mir wieder mal für eine akute Sinnesüberreizung - wie so oft in Mexiko. Dies ist jedoch ausschließlich positiv gemeint.
Our first destination was the Mixquic cemetery. On the Day of the Dead, relatives spend the night here directly at the graves of the deceased - but not in deep mourning. No, food and drinks are taken and people are allowed to celebrate. Before that, the cemetery is open to all visitors. People are busy taking photos and posing for selfies. I had never experienced such an atmosphere in a cemetery. Especially creepy: For the first time in my life, I saw real human bones. Some of them are dug up after a few years and put directly on the graves.
Unser erstes Ziel war der Friedhof von Mixquic. Am Tag der Toten übernachten die Angehörigen hier direkt an den Gräbern der Verstorbenen - jedoch nicht in tiefer Trauer, nein, es werden Speisen und Getränke mitgenommen und es darf gefeiert werden. Davor ist der Friedhof für alle Besucher zugänglich. Es wird fleißig fotografiert und für Selfies posiert. Eine derartige Stimmung einem Friedhof hatte ich noch nie erlebt. Besonders gruselig: Zum ersten Mal in meinem Leben sah ich echte menschliche Knochen. Teilweise werden diese nach einigen Jahren ausgegraben und direkt auf die Gräber gelegt.
Next we visited the beautiful, colourfully decorated courtyard of the church and listened to a short talk about the tradition of Day of the Dead celebrations in Mixquic. We then walked past the main stage where various musicians and dancers performed throughout the day and night. The sun was slowly setting and the streets were getting busier.
Als nächstes besuchten wir den wunderschönen, bunt geschmückten Innenhof der Kirche und hörten uns einen kurzen Vortrag über die Tradition der Feierlichkeiten am Tag der Toten in Mixquic an. Anschließend spazierten wir an der Hauptbühne vorbei, auf der den ganzen Tag über und auch nachts verschiedene Musiker und Tänzer auftraten. Die Sonne ging langsam unter und die Straßen wurden immer belebter.
Now it was time for a meal. Tacos al pastor and then cucumbers with chilli sauce were on our menu. However, there is hardly a Mexican speciality that was not on offer somewhere at a market stall in Mixquic that day. Even during my third trip to Mexico, I keep discovering new dishes. Mexican cuisine is just as diverse and extraordinary as the country itself. After sunset, the little village really came to life and we admired the many, many works of art that had been created especially for this event.
Nun war es an der Zeit für eine Mahlzeit. Es standen Tacos al Pastor und anschließend Gurken mit Chilisoße auf unserem Speiseplan. Es gibt aber wohl kaum eine mexikanische Spezialität, die an diesem Tag nicht irgendwo an einem Marktstand in Mixquic angeboten wurde. Auch während meiner dritten Mexiko-Reise entdecke ich ständig neue Gerichte. Die mexikanische Küche ist genauso vielseitig und außergewöhnlich, wie das Land selbst. Nach Sonnenuntergang erwachte das Dörfchen erst so richtig zum Leben und wir bewunderten die vielen, vielen Kunstwerke, die speziell für diesen Anlass kreiert wurden.
Now I would like to show you some "Ofrendas". These are altars that Mexicans build in their houses to honour the dead. Particularly unique: Some residents of Mixquic made their houses accessible to the crowds of visitors. You could just walk in and admire the ofrendas. In some cases, food and drinks were even offered. I was simply impressed. That goes for the whole trip, by the way. Dia de los Muertos really fascinated me and I could tell you so much more about it, but that would go beyond the scope of this article. Finally, you can see a collage of my girlfriend and me. The day before, we had already put on make-up and celebrated with friends in Mexico City. All I can say is, if you ever get the chance to celebrate Dia de los Muertos in Mexico, don't hesitate - it's worth it!
Nun zeige ich euch noch ein paar "Ofrendas". Das sind Altare, die Mexikaner in ihren Häusern zu Ehren der Toten aufbauen. Besonders einzigartig: Einige Bewohner von Mixquic machten ihre Häuser für die Besuchermassen zugänglich. Man konnte einfach hineinspazieren und die Ofrendas bewundern. Teilweise wurden sogar Speisen und Getränke angeboten. Ich war einfach nur beeindruckt. Das gilt übrigens für den gesamten Ausflug. Der Dia de los Muertos hat mich wirklich in seinen Bann gezogen und ich könnte euch noch so vieles darüber erzählen. Aber das würde den Rahmen sprengen. Abschließend seht ihr noch eine Collage von meiner Freundin und mir. Bereits am Vortag hatten wir uns geschminkt und in Mexiko City mit Freunden gefeiert. Ich sage euch nur, wenn ihr jemals die Chance bekommt, den Dia de los Muertos in Mexiko zu feiern, zögert nicht - es lohnt sich!
