Just a few days after my girlfriend and I arrived back in Mexico City after our vacation, it was once again time for us for a family trip with my parents-in-law. Our destination was a so-called Barrio Mágico. This is the name given to some areas of Mexico City that have a special cultural significance. The little village of San Pedro Actopan doesn't really feel like part of the capital anymore and has its very own charm. In this post, I'll tell you what makes it so special.
Nur wenige Tage nachdem meine Freundin und ich nach unserem Urlaub wieder in Mexico City ankamen, war es für uns wieder einmal Zeit für einen Familienausflug mit meinen Schwiegereltern. Unser Ziel war ein sogenanntes Barrio Mágico. So werden einige Bereiche von Mexiko Stadt bezeichnet, die eine besondere kulturelle Bedeutung haben. Das Örtchen San Pedro Actopan fühlt sich eigentlich nicht mehr wie ein Teil der Hauptstadt an und hat seinen ganz eigenen Charme. Was es so besonders macht, erzähle ich euch in diesem Beitrag.
Just a few minutes after our arrival, I realized what this place mainly stands for. Mole is one of Mexico's most famous dishes and no less than 89% of the amount of this unique sauce consumed in Mexico City is produced here. Even of the total amount made in the whole country, as much as 60% comes from San Pedro Actopan. No wonder that the streets are lined with one store after another selling the necessary ingredients. The number of restaurants is also huge and turkey with mole is advertised everywhere.
Bereits wenige Minuten nach unserer Ankunft wurde mir bewusst, wofür dieser Ort hauptsächlich steht. Mole ist eines der berühmtesten Gerichte Mexikos und hier werden nicht weniger als 89% der Menge dieser einzigartigen Soße produziert, die in Mexiko Stadt verbraucht wird. Selbst von der Gesamtmenge, die im ganzen Land hergestellt wird, stammen ganze 60% aus San Pedro Actopan. Kein Wunder, dass sich in den Straßen ein Geschäft mit den erforderlichen Zutaten an das nächste reiht. Auch die Anzahl der Restaurants ist riesig und überall wird vor allem Truthahn mit Mole angepriesen.
But San Pedro Actopan has much more to offer than just culinary delights. We visited a total of four beautifully designed churches, all built in their own unique style. To reach the second cathedral, we had to climb a few steps. But it was worth the effort, because from the hill we were able to get an overview of the whole town, which is located in the very south of the capital district.
Doch San Pedro Actopan hat noch wesentlich mehr als nur kulinarische Köstlichkeiten zu bieten. Insgesamt besuchten wir vier wunderschön gestaltete Kirchen, die alle in ihrem einzigartigen Stil gebaut wurden. Um die zweite Kathedrale zu erreichen, mussten wir einige Stufen überwinden. Doch es war die Anstrengung wert, denn von dem Hügel konnten wir uns einen Überblick über die ganze Ortschaft machen, die sich ganz im Süden des Hauptstadt-Distrikts befindet.
As we strolled through the idyllic alleyways, we also took a look inside some of the restaurants. They were all very cozy and colourful and I could hardly wait to eat together. We finally decided on a restaurant with a beautifully designed courtyard and of course I ordered turkey with mole - anything else would almost have been an insult to this famous place. The portion was simply huge. I didn't even manage to eat half of it, although the mole tasted delicious. It wasn't the first time I'd tried mole, but it still felt special in this place.
Beim Spaziergang durch die idyllischen Gässchen blickten wir auch in die Innenräume des ein oder anderen Restaurants. Diese waren alle sehr gemütlich und farbenfroh gestaltet und ich konnte es kaum erwarten, gemeinsam zu essen. Schließlich entschieden wir uns für ein Lokal mit einem schön gestalteten Innenhof und natürlich bestellte ich Truthahn mit Mole – alles andere wäre fast eine Beleidigung für diesen berühmten Ort gewesen. Die Portion war einfach nur riesig. Ich schaffte es nicht einmal ,die Hälfte zu verspeisen, obwohl die Mole köstlich schmeckte. für mich war es nicht das erste Mal, dass ich Mole probierte, aber an diesem Ort fühlte es sich trotzdem irgendwie besonders an.
Mole is known for its complex and rich flavors. It consists of a variety of ingredients, including chili peppers, chocolate, nuts, spices and fruit, which together create a thick, spicy sauce. The preparation of mole can be very time-consuming as the ingredients need to be roasted, ground and slow-cooked, resulting in a deep and complex flavor that is totally unique. After the meal, we visited another church on the opposite hill from the previous one. Soon after, we reached the last cathedral on our walk, which I also liked very much.
Mole ist für ihre komplexen und reichen Aromen bekannt. Sie besteht aus einer Vielzahl von Zutaten, darunter Chilischoten, Schokolade, Nüsse, Gewürze und Früchte, die zusammen eine dicke, würzige Soße ergeben. Die Zubereitung von Mole kann sehr zeitaufwendig sein, da die Zutaten geröstet, gemahlen und langsam gekocht werden müssen, was zu einem tiefen und vielschichtigen sowie absolut einzigartigen Geschmack führt. Nach der Mahlzeit besuchten wir noch eine weitere Kirche auf dem gegenüberliegenden Hügel der vorherigen. Gleich danach erreichten wir die letzte Kathedrale auf unserem Spaziergang, die mir ebenfalls sehr gut gefiel.
For me, San Pedro Actopan was once again a part of the Mexican capital that you would probably never get to see as a normal tourist. I am very grateful to my parents-in-law that I can always visit such impressive places with them that I have never heard of, but which are incredibly beautiful and have a special atmosphere. If you ever spend a longer time in Mexico City, think you've seen all the highlights and are looking for a new destination for a day trip, then definitely visit this remote Barrio Mágico!
San Pedro Actopan war für mich wieder einmal so ein Teil der mexikanischen Hauptstadt, den man wohl als normaler Tourist nie zu Gesicht bekommen würde. Ich bin meinen Schwiegereltern sehr dankbar, dass ich mit ihnen immer wieder solch beeindruckende Orte besuchen kann, von denen ich noch nie gehört habe, die aber unglaublich schön sind und eine besondere Atmosphäre versprühen. Falls ihr mal längere Zeit in Mexico City verbringt, denkt ihr habt schon alle Highlights gesehen und nach einem neuen Ziel für einen Tagesausflug sucht, dann besucht unbedingt dieses etwas abgelegene Barrio Mágico!
