After the pandemic, which deeply affected our lives for about two years, there has been a global travel craze. I would travel abroad every year before the pandemic. Since it became more difficult to go abroad due to the restrictions of the pandemic and the subsequent inflationary period, I had started to make my travel plans domestically for the last two years. I also mentioned this in my Aegean tour and day-trip post. However, it was the time for me to start to travel abroad. In the fifth part of my Thessaloniki travel post series, I will write about Roman Agora, Anopoli and Heptapyrgion.

Yaklaşık iki yıldır hayatımızı derinden etkileyen pandemiden sonra küresel çapta bir seyahat çılgınlığı yaşanıyor. Pandemiden önce her yıl yurtdışı seyahatleri yapan biriydim. Pandeminin getirdiği seyahat kısıtlamaları ve sonrasında gelen enflasyonist dönem nedeniyle yurtdışına çıkmak iyice zorlaştığından ben de seyahat planlarımı son iki yıldır yurtiçine yönelik yapmaya başlamıştım. Bunu Ege turu ve günübirlik yaptığım seyahat yazılarında da belirtmiştim. Buna karşın, benim için artık yurtdışı seyahatlerime başlamanın zamanı gelmişti. Selanik gezisi yazı serimin beşinci bölümünde sizlere Roman Pazarı, Yukarı Şehir (Anopoli) ve Yedikule’den (Heptapyrgion) bahsedeceğim.
In the fourth post of my Thessaloniki tour, I wrote about the Hagia Sophia Church and Church of Hagios Demetrios, which are also within walking distance of each other.
Selanik turumun dördüncü yazısında sizlere yine birbirlerine yürüme mesafesinde olan Beyaz Kule, Aristotelous Meydanı ve Ayasofya Kilisesi’nden bahsetmiştim.
Our next stop after Church of Hagios Demetrios was the Roman Forum/Agora. I can say that the Roman Agora is just below the church. Agora means market in ancient Greek. This was the biggest historical place I have ever seen after the Roman Forum in Rome. I tried very hard to fit it into my phone's camera :) There is a small ancient theater on the east side. Apart from this, a few surviving Stoas stand out. There are underground passages and areas used as shops below.
Aya Dimitri Kilisesi’nden sonraki durağımız Roman Forum/Agorası’ydı. Roman Agorası kilisenin hemen aşağısında diyebilirim. Agora eski Yunanca’da pazar demektir. Burası Roma’daki Roman Forum sonra gördüğüm en büyük tarihi yerdi. Telefonun kamerasına sığdırmak için çok uğraştım : ) Doğu tarafından küçük bir antik tiyatro var. Bunun dışında ayakta kalan bir kaç Stoa göze çarpıyor. Aşağı tarafa gelindiğinde ise zamanında yer altı geçitleri ve dükkan olarak kullanılmış alanlar mevcut.
We had walked a lot and we were tired. The weather was also warmer by October. We sat in a cafe next to the Roman Agora, rested and had something to eat and drink. Our last stop in the second day's plan was Anopoli, which is the most beautiful place in Thessaloniki imo. Anopoli means upper city in Greek. Therefore, we had to walk upper town of Thessaloniki. After about a 25-minute walk, we came to the Tsinari (Çınar) neighborhood of Anapoli. This place used to be known as the Turkish neighborhood. There is a restaurant called Ouzeri Tsinari, which resembles our old coffeehouses. Actually, we could have taken a break here and eat something.
Çok yürümüştük ve artık yorulmuştuk. Hava da Ekim ayına göre sıcaktı. Roman Agorası’nın yanında bir kafede oturup hem dinlendik hem de birşeyler yiyip içtik. İkinci günün planındaki son durağımız ve bence Selanik’in en güzel yeri olan Anopoli idi. Anopoli Yunanca’da üst şehir demek. Dolaysıyla Selanik’in yukarısına doğru yürümemiz gerekiyordu. Yaklaşık 25 dakikalık bir yürüyüşün ardından Anapoli’nin Tsinari (Çınar), mahallesine geldik. Burası eskiden Türk mahallesi olarak bilinirmiş. Burada Ouzeri Tsinari adıyla bizim eski kahvehanelere benzeyen lokanta tarsi bir yer var. Aslında burada da mola verip birşeyler yiyebilirdik.
We continued on our way. After a 10-minute walk, we arrived at the Trigoniou Tower (Chained Tower). This is the region known as Yedikule during the Ottoman Empire. Its current name is Heptapyrgion. I can say that this place is just like Yedikule in Istanbul. The tower and walls were built during the Ottoman period. The walls extend to the northwest of the region. Likewise, it was once used as a dungeon like in Istanbul. You can watch the panoramic view of Thessaloniki from the place called balcony. Choosing to come here towards sunset was also a good choice for us. From this point, Thessaloniki resembles Istanbul :)
Yolumuza devam ettik. 10 dakikalık bir yürüşün ardından Trigoniou Kulesi’ne (Zincirli Kule) vardık. Burası Osmanlı Devleti zamanında Yedikule olarak bilinen bölgedir. Şimdiki adı ise Heptapyrgion’dur. Burası tıpkı bizim İstanbul’daki Yedikule gibi diyebilirim. Kule ve surlar Osmanlı zamanında yapılmış. Surlar bölgenin kuzeybatısına kadar uzanıyor. Aynı şekilde bir zamanlar İstanbul’daki gibi zindan olarak kullanılmış. Balkon denilen yerden Selanik’in panaromik görüntüsünü izleyebilirsiniz. Gün batımına doğru buraya gelmeyi seçmek de bizim için güzel bir tercih oldu. Bu noktadan da Selanik İstanbul’a benziyor :)
