Basque Country route and Zurragamurdi caves
Ruta Pais Vasco y cuevas de Zurragamurdi
This time I will tell you about my little route through the Basque Country and the caves of Zurragamurdi, it was the middle of July 2021, my beloved Suzuki B-King failed me at the last moment and I had to prepare the Iron (Yamaha XV1600WildStar) the night before.
Buenas! Esta vez es contare sobre mi pequeña ruta por el pais vasco y las cuevas de Zurragamurdi, era mediados de Julio del año 2021, mi querida moto Suzuki B-King me fallo en el ultimo momento y tuve que preparar el Hierro(Yamaha XV1600WildStar) la noche anterior.
Saddlebags mounted to carry just enough clothes, I get ready to refuel and meet up with my biker friends, and as always I'm ready to guide them to our base camp in a small village in La Rioja on the border with the Basque Country.
Alforjas montadas para llevar la ropa justa, me dispongo a repostar y a encontrarme con mis amigos moteros, que como siempre me dispongo a guiarlos para llegar hasta nuestro campamento base en un pequeño pueblo de La Rioja frontera con el Pais Vasco.
After spending the night we headed to our first tourist stop: Butrón Castle. In reality this castle's current appearance is due to a reform that was made in the 19th century, so it does not really look like it did before, its original shape did not resemble a castle and its origins date back to the Middle Ages.
Después de hacer noche nos dirigimos hasta nuestra primera parada turística: El Castillo de Butrón. En realidad este castillo su aspecto actual se debe a una reforma que se hizo en el siglo XIX, así que no tiene que ver en realidad a como era antes, su forma original no se parecía a un castillo y sus orígenes datan de la edad media.
The castle is quite beautiful and people line up to take pictures next to it, in December 2021 it was bought by a private individual and I don't know if the access has changed, it reminds of Bavarian castles.
El castillo es bastante bonito y la gente hace fila para hacerse fotos junto a el, en diciembre del 2021 fue comprado por un particular y desconozco si ha cambiado el acceso, recuerda a castillos Bávaros.
On the way to our next stop I passed by the old abandoned nuclear power plant of Lemóniz, this plant was built in 1972 and abandoned in 1984, short-lived due to political problems in the area and environmentalists, the nuclear power plant is at the foot of the sea and is quite impressive although in my photo it is not visible. It can be visited with prior permission, many photographers do photo sessions inside.
De camino a nuestra siguiente parada me pasé por la antigua central nuclear Abandonada de Lemóniz, esta central se construyo en el 1972 y se abandonó en 1984, corta vida por problemas políticos de la zona y ecologistas, la central nuclear está al pie del mar e impresiona bastante aunque en mi foto no se aprecia. Se puede visitar con permiso previo, muchos fotógrafos hacen sesiones fotográficas en su interior.
And then we arrive at our destination for today, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. A beautiful place where scenes from Game of Thrones were filmed, in the series it is the castle of Dragon Rock. Normally they let you walk this long staircase but due to problems caused by the pandemic it was not possible that day, we were not going to walk it either as we were short of time and with the motorbike equipment it was quite uncomfortable to walk. However, the impressive views were not to be missed.
Y llegamos a nuestro destino de hoy, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. Precioso lugar donde se rodaron escenas de juego de tronos, en la serie es el castillo de Roca dragón. Normalmente dejan recorrer tan larga escalinata pero por problemas generados por la pandemia no se podía ese día, nosotros tampoco la íbamos a recorrer ya que íbamos justos de tiempo y con la equipación de moto era bastante incomodo andar. Eso si, las impresionantes vistas no nos las podía quitar nadie.
On returning from this impressive place I wanted to separate from the group for a moment and go on a little excursion on my own, so I headed for the Ullíbarri-Gamboa reservoir. This large lake has a bathing area and being the summer season it was full of people enjoying its waters, there were also boats so it is a great recreational area.
De vuelta de este impresionante lugar quise separarme del grupo momentáneamente y hacerme una pequeña excursión en solitario, así que me dirigí al Embalse Ullíbarri-Gamboa. Este gran lago dispone de zona de baño y siendo temporada de verano estaba llena de personas disfrutando de sus aguas, también habían barcos así que es una gran zona de recreo.
Back to base camp, we spend the night and prepare the excursion for the next day to the Zurragarmurdi Caves, here we split the group, a few of us go to the caves and others, exhausted by the previous day, decide to return to our city of Zaragoza. It was very hot but being in the north it was still bearable
Vuelta al campamento base, hacemos noche y preparamos la excursión para el siguiente día a las Cuevas de Zurragarmurdi, aquí nos dividimos grupo, unos pocos vamos a las cuevas y otros agotados por el día anterior deciden volverse a nuestra ciudad de Zaragoza. Hacia mucho calor pero estando en el norte aun se podía aguantar.
We arrived at Zurragamurdi and headed towards the caves, there you have to pay an entrance fee but it was cheap, it is worth paying for it. Next I will show you some pictures of the place, you know what they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.
Llegamos a Zurragamurdi y nos dirigimos hacia las cuevas, allí hay que pagar entrada pero era barata, merece la pena pagar por ello. A continuación os mostrare bastantes imágenes del lugar, ya saben lo que dice, mas vale una imagen que mil palabras.
It is a nice tour, you can take all the time you want to see them, but if you want to see the whole caves you can't if you are handicapped as they are full of stairs and slippery sections. In these caves there were legends of witchcraft and the film of the witches of Zurragamurdi was shot. There is a stage inside the caves where they sometimes put on shows.
Es un bonito recorrido, te puedes tomar todo el tiempo que quieras para verlas, si quieres verlas completas no se puede si eres minusválido ya que esta repletas de escaleras y tramos resbaladizos. En estas cuevas habían leyendas de brujeria y se rodó la película de las brujas de Zurragamurdi. Hay un escenario en su interior donde algunas veces se hacen espectáculos.
After the visit we went for lunch, here the food is really good and copious, I ordered stew and beef entrecôte. The chickpea stew comes in a big bowl and you can eat as much as you want, I was so hungry that I repeated 5 times! Everything was delicious and I loved this restaurant.
Terminando la visita nos dirigimos a comer, aquí la comida es verdaderamente buena y copiosa, me pedí cocido y entrecot de ternera. El cocido de garbanzos viene en un bol bastante grande y puedes comer todo lo que quieras, estaba tan hambriento que repetí 5 veces! Todo estaba buenísimo me encantó este restaurante.
After lunch, with my stomach full to the max, I had to go back with temperatures that exceeded 40 degrees but my adventure didn't end here...
Terminada la comida con el estomago lleno a mas no poder tocaba volver con unas temperaturas que superaban los 40 grados pero aquí no terminaba mi aventura...
When I had about 70 km to go to my city the exhaust pipe bracket broke, then the exhaust fell to the ground with the consequence that I had to call a tow truck and finish my trip by tow truck... but well at least it was at the end of my trip and not in the middle which would have ruined everything.
Cuando me quedaban unos 70 km para mi ciudad el soporte del tubo de escape se partió, entonces el escape cayó al suelo con la consecuencia que tuve que llamar a una grúa y terminar mi viaje en grúa.. pero bueno al menos fue al final de mi viaje y no a mitad que lo hubiera estropeado todo.

Siempre he querido ir por esos lugares y de ahí subir a Ainhoa, el pueblo con mi nombre.
Hasta la fecha aún no lo he conseguido pero espero poder ir algún día con alguien ya que al no tener vehículo y no haber conexiones con trenes y buses lo tengo jodido.
Merece la pena visitar el norte aunque como bien has dicho los lugares remotos tienen difícil comunicación.

Sí que te diste buen festín en el restaurante, sí 🙂
No conocía ese castillo (y he estado varias veces en el País Vasco recorriendo sitios distintos) pero es una pasada y, sin duda, lo apunto para siguientes viajes.
Las cuevas de Zugarramurdi las quise visitar en mi primer viaje por tierras vascas hará 5 años o así pero iba con mi expareja y al final no quedó tiempo para ello; lo que sí visité fue Gastelugatxe y es un sitio de película (nunca mejor dicho) y, en mi caso, sí pude llegar hasta el final y redoblar la campana de la capilla que hay allí, que es tradición.
Una putada lo de que se averíen los vehículos en el camino pero ocurriendo ya al final, teniendo solución y no produciéndose accidentes..., mejor que de otro modo.
PD: Estuve viviendo durante 1 año en Zaragoza hace como 15 años.
