This morning our ladies Summer Squad took a walk along the coast from our regular workout in Kommetjie to Soetwater reserve. The Reserve is also home to the Soetwater Environmental Education Center which is run by a lovely man named Lappies.
We met Lappies on the way to the biggest obstacle course that I’ve ever participated in. He was very proud to talk us through the course and then divided us all into 3 groups. Some ladies were chewing at the bit to get going while others were rather apprehensive at the height of some of the obstacles that lay ahead.
Our group began with the tire swing and were tasked with climbing from the top of each tire to the next while holding onto the ropes. I think we managed quite well although some women use the bottom rung of the tire rather than the top 😂. Oh well we all got to the other side.
Next was the tire wall which was a lot more scary. Not to mention one of the top tires looked rather precariously tied onto the structure which itself probably needs a little TLC. Again our group succeeded to climb up and over the obstacle except for 1 elderly lady, named Anne, who once at the top decided to go back down the same way she had come. We were all relieved because we didn’t want to be the group that had someone fall or hurt themselves.
Next up was an uneven balance frame that again looked like it had seen better days. One by one we crossed the frame avoiding cracked or loose beams as we went. If this all sounds a little dangerous then you obviously haven’t lived in Africa. Things only tend to get fixed when they have already fallen down, so the fact that this is all still standing is pretty encouraging.
The Rope Climb was a little higher grade for most of us with a weaker upper body strength - I ain’t gonna be in any Cross Fit Champs any time ever!
The tire over and under / crawl depended on the abilities of the ladies. The agile went over and under to the end, while others climbed up and just crawled over the top (um! Me!) and then still a few just crawled through the middle of the tires and didn’t bother climbing up. Each to her own. Heck! WE DID IT!
We had a more balance intensive obstacle up next with a tight wire walking type of slack lining experience 😂. Luckily we weren’t high off the ground.
Next was a VERTICAL TIRE TUBE AND ROPE DESCENT. This one looked easy for the smaller girls among us, but it proved tricky for those with longer arms and legs. Crawling into the tube from below was the tricky part and then shimmying up using your elbows and knees to climb the inside of the tube was an interesting exercise. Once at the top you finally realise how high you are then have to use all the arms strength in the world to lower yourself down. (I loved it!!! )
The two groups ahead of us did a couple other obstacles including the rope wall - up and over! And all kudos go to 66 year old Gail for managing to conquer her fears and make it down the other side.
We ran out of time to finish the whole course this time, but we will head back next week to get it done.

If you’re ever in the Cape and want to take part in this awesome experience, give Lappies a call the Soetwater Environmental Education Center. He’s an awesome old guy with loads of stories to keep you entertained.
Here’s the website if you’re interested:

What to take along:
Comfy trainers / trail shoes
Stretchy, fitted workout clothing
Sunscreen (it was cool in the morning but there is no shade later in the day)
Water
Snacks
Wet wipes (our hands and legs were black from the tires after just 1 obstacle)
Swimsuit (take a swim in the tidal pool after the obstacle adventure and enjoy the cool salty Atlantic Ocean)
By the time we hit 9am we were on our walk back to Kommetjie, chatting and drinking tea from flasks on the go. Next time we will get there a bit earlier so that we can fit in that swim before heading home.
What a fun morning! We might do this once a month and try to track our PBs and give a donation to Lappies and Environmental Center.
I think it was a great experience, but you also got a little bit of movement in a great place.
