In adventuring, sharing is for suckers...

Aah, the critical fail roll... not only a great way for the DM to demonstrate his/her creativity, but more importantly one of the better ways for the DM to prove to the players who's in charge! 😈
While multiple adventuring parties competing to beat a dungeon and get the treasure isn't something I've personally experienced, competing with other members within our party for treasure is a different story. Not that our games are ALL like that (in fact more often than not we keep sneaky underhandedness aimed at the monsters & NPC's), but the games where anything goes tended to be the more memorable ones. And they almost always involved either a couple particular players or one particular DM (that's right, you guys know who you are...).
Oddly enough, the inter-party backstabbing was seldom about treasure, and instead tended towards finding ways to embarrass one or more other players. Any funny business regarding treasure was usually about the suspicion that one of us was claiming treasure without the party knowing about it. Nothing like secret notes passed between players and Dungeon Masters to spark paranoia in the most trusting of us! It's one of the reasons I stopped playing kender & halfling rogues in certain games; it made it entirely too easy for other party members to turn my character upside down and shake him to see what falls out and whether I was holding out on them... 😏

Especially the ones involving explosives... one of the few ways to both beat the big bad AND achieve a near-total-party-kill at once! 🧨🧨🧨
