The original definition is something like "being aware of and striving to fight racism, sexism, discrimination against LGBTQ peoples, oppression of the disadvantaged, etc." A great goal, and yes there are still people who consider themselves woke who still hold true to that original goal. I'm not poking fun at those people. Unfortunately a vocal & powerful minority are steering the movement to focus purely on political correctness, punitive taxation of successful people & businesses (no matter whether they came by their wealth ethically or not), and creating a society where anyone who doesn't believe EXACTLY the things they say they should are the enemy. Even many of those who would be considered former staunch supporters of the original goals like J.K. Rowling eventually find themselves being targeted for relatively minor (and I thought pretty reasonable) differences of opinion. It is slowly becoming a cult, and if the twisted thought leaders of that movement get their way, it will be quite powerful with very negative social & political repercussions.
I think steevc is right in that those extremists are the minority of the whole, but unfortunately that minority are the ones controlling the platform and the message. In my mind it is THEY who have already ruined the term 'woke' before I ever started making fun of them. But that's just my opinion... 😕
