Ukraine was under the rule of the Russian Tsardom between 1775-1918. The rise of the idea of nation-state and nationalism naturally affected the Ukrainian people. Especially the Revolutions of 1848-49 helped the Ukrainian people to develop the opinion that they are a separate nation from the Russians.
Ukrayna 1775-1918 yılları arasında Rus Çarlığı’nın hâkimiyetindeydi. Ulus-devlet fikrinin ve milliyetçiliğin yükselmesi doğal olarak Ukrayna halkını da etkiledi. Özellikle 1848-49 Devrimleri Ukrayna halkının Ruslardan ayrı bir millet olduğu kanaatini geliştirmelerine vesile oldu.
World War I brought about significant changes in the situation. The collapse of the Russian Tsardom with the October Revolution of 1917 and the outbreak of a civil war gave the Ukrainians the expected opportunity to declare their independence. The Central Ukrainian Council, which met on March 17, 1917, started to work, but they could not achieve what was desired. The Bolshevik administration dissolved the local assemblies, ending Ukraine's independence.

Rus Çarlığı’nın 1917 Ekim İhtilâli ile dağılması ve bir iç savaşın çıkması Ukraynalılar’a bağımsızlıklarını ilân etmek için beklenen fırsatı verdi. 17 Mart 1917’de toplanan Merkezî Ukrayna Konseyi çalışmaya başladı fakat istenileni elde edemediler. Bolşevik idaresi yerel meclisleri feshederek Ukrayna’nın bağımsızlığına son verdi.
After the resistance of the Ukrainian Council, the Ukrainian-Russian war took place between 1917-1921. As a result of the fierce struggles in this period of turmoil, the Ukrainian National Republic was proclaimed in Kiev. However, an independent structure could not be built. Western Ukraine was attached to Poland.

After World War II, Poland also came under Russian rule; In this way, Western and Eastern Ukraine remained under Soviet rule, where no political structure could survive under Stalin.
II. Dünya Savaşı’nın ardından Polonya da Rus hâkimiyeti altına girdi; bu suretle Batı ve Doğu Ukrayna, Stalin yönetiminde hiçbir siyasî yapının yaşama imkânı bulamayacağı Sovyet egemenliği altında kaldı.
The Soviet system showing signs of collapse since the last quarter of the 20th century started the last phase of Ukraine's history. As a result of the reforms of the Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, the nations under communist rule entered the process of independence. The democratic elections in Ukraine, in which the socialists and democrats formed the main sides, took place in March 1990. The Democratic side representing the opposition ensured the proclamation of Ukraine's independence on June 16, 1990.
Sovyet sisteminin 20. yüzyılın son çeyreğinden itibaren çökme emâresi göstermesi Ukrayna tarihinin son safhasını başlattı. Sovyet lideri Mihail Gorbaçov’un reformları neticesinde komünist idaresi altındaki milletler bağımsızlık sürecine girdiler. Sosyalistler ve demokratların temel bloklarını teşkil ettiği Ukrayna demokratik seçimleri Mart 1990’da gerçekleşti. Muhalefeti temsil eden Demokratik blok 16 Haziran 1990’da Ukrayna’nın bağımsızlığının ilânını sağladı.
On 21 November 2004, the election was repeated thanks to the actions of the other candidate Viktor Yushchenko and his supporters, due to the fact that Viktor Yanukovych was declared to have won in the Presidential elections in Ukraine in the first election, and it was determined that the results announced later were fraudulent. Demonstrations first started in front of Independence Square in Kiev and the Verkhovna Rada, the Ukrainian Parliament.
21 Kasım 2004'te Ukrayna'daki Cumhurbaşkanlığı seçimlerinde Viktor Yanukoviç'in ilk seçimde kazandığı açıklanıp sonrasında açıklanan sonuçlarda hile olduğu tespit edilmesi sebebi ile diğer aday Viktor Yuşçenko ve taraftarlarının eylemleri sayesinde seçim tekrar ettirilmiştir. Gösteriler ilk olarak Kiev'deki Bağımsızlık Meydanı ve Ukrayna Parlamentosu olan Verkhovna Rada'nın önünde başlamıştır.
This success of Yushchenko, who is pro-Western, is called the "Orange Revolution". The reason why it is called orange is that Yushchenko, who is one of the presidential candidates and claims that the elections were rigged, used this color during the election campaign.
Batı yanlısı olan Yuşçenko'nun bu başarısına "Turuncu Devrim" denmektedir. Turuncu denilmesinin sebebi başkan adaylarından olan ve seçimlere hile karıştığını iddia eden Yuşçenko'nun seçim kampanyası dönemince bu rengi kullanmasıdır.
As you can see, the effort of the Ukrainians to express themselves has been going on for centuries. The people of Ukraine, who have come to this day sometimes with attempts and sometimes with democratic methods, are tried to be intimidated by war. I am so sorry for them. Long live Ukraine!
